To not have a takeaway, roast dinner or dry up every week?

I was talking to a good friend yesterday about Easter, especially with the current situation. She mentioned that she's gutted she can't have her usual lamb roast dinner this Easter. I said we had a dinner last weekend so doubt we'd have one for Easter. Conversation then extended into roast dinners every week come hell or high water, weekend takeaways and fry ups, etc.

She has a takeaway every Friday, cooked breakfast every Saturday and a roast dinner every single Sunday, even during a heatwave. Her family have been this way since she moved in with her partner. They now have two boys 9 and 7. Neither particularly enjoy a dinner but will eat meat and Yorkshires with gravy. They can afford a takeaway most weeks but aren't loaded. It works for them.

We, however, rarely eat these things. I don't enjoy greasy food first thing in the morning, it repeats on me. I will have eggs on toast occasionally. Takeaways are for days like Mother's/Father's Day, rare night off, celebrations. I like a dinner but not every week. I find it a huge faff, a good couple hours of cooking, lots of washing up, and all eaten in no time at all. I'd honestly rather have pasta for a quick/easy/lazy meal. To add, my children are still small. My 3 year old has a restricted diet (ASD) and doesn't touch meat or veg, the baby will. Neither like pancakes, despite a few attempts, I won't give them takeaways yet due to salt content. They will however, happily wolf down homemade pizzas, and peanut butter on toast instead of a fry up.

Light-hearted conversation but she was fascinated with the that we won't be having a roast dinner tomorrow. We are having roast chicken, homemade flatbreads, tzatziki, and, Greek salad with feta.

So, AIBU to not have takeaway, cooked breakfast or a roast dinner every week? Do any of you? Just curious.

We have a family roast dinner pretty much every Sunday with the in laws and my dad coming over. Occasionally we will have a bbq instead.
Tomorrow I’m making a lazy Sunday dinner as it’s just me and the kids. frozen roast potato and parsnip and Yorkshire’s ready made mash and pre cut veg. Roast in the bag chicken.
Normally we either have bacon sandwiches or pancakes for Saturday breakfast and a takeaway every other Friday.
It works for us.

Whatwedontknow · 11/04/2020 13:44

Fascinating post OP ... not

All that preamble 🥱

Hunnybears · 11/04/2020 13:44

I can see why you wouldn’t have them every week, as you nor you children are huge fans. So atm it’s pointless for you and that’s fair enough.

I on the other have love a roast dinner as do my children so I enjoy making them as there’s a lot of please from eating them (even if I do say so myself ha) so I always try and make a roast once a week (not always on a Sunday however)

I also like a takeaway usually once a week from usually the Chinese. (Not at the minute though as they don’t deliver sadly and I don’t want to drive of course) Kids have tried one once, but they weren’t keen so they don’t have a Chinese takeaway, we usually have one when they’re in bed.

I also love a bacon roll and usually have one a week again usually on a weekend. If you don’t enjoy that stuff though then it’s pointless. I’m a gannet and love everything I shouldn’t!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 11/04/2020 13:45

No, never done the Sunday roast thing. I do like them (veggie version) but can’t do the same meals week in week out as find it very boring. Also not keen on frying food as not healthiest meals. I do enjoy the odd takeaway though, say once a month.

I know people like your friends though that have set meals per day of the week. Personal choice, not one I’d make.

handbagsatdawn33 · 11/04/2020 13:46

I do a roast most Sundays. I therefore don't have to think about what to cook on one day per week.

It's by far the easiest meal I cook; I reckon no more than 30 minutes actually doing things in the kitchen, the meal basically cooks itself.

Sparklesocks · 11/04/2020 13:47

People eat different things from each other and have different routines.

How mind blowing..

DangerCat01 · 11/04/2020 13:47

This thread is hilarious. Please don’t be upset OP.

I’m roasting a chicken tonight as it goes and we’re having it with salad and lemon roast potatoes. I used to consider this meal a roast but now I shall reconsider.

SpillTheTeaa · 11/04/2020 13:47

Before the current situation I had a take away every Friday. It's my treat and I love it!
Don't do the whole roast dinner on a Sunday. I don't really enjoy a roast in all honesty anyway.

Ponoka7 · 11/04/2020 13:48

"Takeaways are for days like Mother's/Father's Day, rare night off, celebrations"

For us (me and my DD 22) takeaways are for film nights. Celebrations are for more expensive than usual food such as M&S £10 Steaks and a more expensive bottle of wine.

Leaannb · 11/04/2020 13:48

All 3 just about every day

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 11/04/2020 13:51

DangerCat "I’m roasting a chicken tonight as it goes and we’re having it with salad and lemon roast potatoes."

Unless you can confirm that it is in fact a "huge" salad that any child diners will "hoover up", that is not acceptable on MN.

I dont get takeaways as I find them expensive and a bit crap. I like a pizza from the supermarket though.

Cooked breakfast every Saturday morning and a roast every Sunday is standard here though, kids would be disappointed if I didnt.

Cordial11 · 11/04/2020 13:53

Couldn't be bothered to do a roast every week myself but I know others do. Yes to takeways though Grin

Christmastreedown · 11/04/2020 13:57

A medal and claps for you OP!

'It's by far the easiest meal I cook; I reckon no more than 30 minutes actually doing things in the kitchen, the meal basically cooks itself'

True, but the time wasted hanging around? I just can't be bothered. I also don't like the smell of it cooking so any excuse to avoid it really Grin

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 11/04/2020 13:58

I buy my antifreeze in Waitrose, Worral, it's better quality and doesn't have sweeteners. My weed is organically grown and harvested by unicorns as they can't get coronavirus.

I think people are too lazy nowadays

I think people are too sanctimonious nowadays.

Haha Buzz.
I can turn then most defiant salad dodgers with mine. It’s all in the dressing!

madcatladyforever · 11/04/2020 14:01

The usual nasty posts in response to a light hearted post about preferences. You should all give your heads a wobble quite honestly.
I've never eaten a roast dinner in my life OP. Since stomach surgery I've lost all interest in food and my senose of taste has diminished. All that stodgy fatty food would make me ill.

DangerCat01 · 11/04/2020 14:05

But she is having roast chicken and with extra cheese!

PickAChew · 11/04/2020 14:07

Do what you like. Different people like different food.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 11/04/2020 14:10

We dont have any of those three meals, ever

shineaflight · 11/04/2020 14:11

You never have a fry up?! Ever?

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 11/04/2020 14:11

I work a lot of weekends but when I’m home I like to do a cooked breakfast on Saturday and roast beef or chicken on Sunday. It’s what my family have always done, it’s traditional for us. It’s a tasty change from a workday bolted bowl of cereal or a hasty packed lunch.
But do what you like, whatever feels like home to you.

I do like the sound of the random suppers, cava and crisps and the gin and ice lolly combination. I have ice pops, off to put some ind the freezer now. Wonder what they would go with, maybe vodka?

Patsypie · 11/04/2020 14:16

You sound horribly judgey and superior. Do you want us to say that you're great and your friend is an unhealthy idiot? Grow up and find a hobby!
