To not have a takeaway, roast dinner or dry up every week?

I was talking to a good friend yesterday about Easter, especially with the current situation. She mentioned that she's gutted she can't have her usual lamb roast dinner this Easter. I said we had a dinner last weekend so doubt we'd have one for Easter. Conversation then extended into roast dinners every week come hell or high water, weekend takeaways and fry ups, etc.

She has a takeaway every Friday, cooked breakfast every Saturday and a roast dinner every single Sunday, even during a heatwave. Her family have been this way since she moved in with her partner. They now have two boys 9 and 7. Neither particularly enjoy a dinner but will eat meat and Yorkshires with gravy. They can afford a takeaway most weeks but aren't loaded. It works for them.

We, however, rarely eat these things. I don't enjoy greasy food first thing in the morning, it repeats on me. I will have eggs on toast occasionally. Takeaways are for days like Mother's/Father's Day, rare night off, celebrations. I like a dinner but not every week. I find it a huge faff, a good couple hours of cooking, lots of washing up, and all eaten in no time at all. I'd honestly rather have pasta for a quick/easy/lazy meal. To add, my children are still small. My 3 year old has a restricted diet (ASD) and doesn't touch meat or veg, the baby will. Neither like pancakes, despite a few attempts, I won't give them takeaways yet due to salt content. They will however, happily wolf down homemade pizzas, and peanut butter on toast instead of a fry up.

Light-hearted conversation but she was fascinated with the that we won't be having a roast dinner tomorrow. We are having roast chicken, homemade flatbreads, tzatziki, and, Greek salad with feta.

So, AIBU to not have takeaway, cooked breakfast or a roast dinner every week? Do any of you? Just curious.

What?

Do you want an applaud?

Do you want to be told that your friend is an unhealthy weirdo?

What do you want from this thread?

zigaziga · 11/04/2020 11:43

Obviously you’re not BU. Everyone should eat what they want, including your friend.

If people are wanting to cook more and go all out as a way to keep themselves happy at home, they should do it. Equally, if you don’t like roast dinners don’t have a roast dinner

ChocolateDove · 11/04/2020 11:45

You're obviously not unreasonable. You can eat what you want. I wouldn't eat what you eat though. We are all different.

Isawthathaggis · 11/04/2020 11:45

You eat what you like, she eats what she wants. Meh.

YABU to use the phrase ‘it repeats on me’. It’s particularly unpleasant and makes you sound about 80 and dirty.

WTF99 · 11/04/2020 11:45

People like what they like. What's your point?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 11/04/2020 11:45

We have some sort of take away every Friday
Even if it's just a bag of chips
I'm done with the week by then and need a relaxed evening
Clearly I'm going to hell in a handcart
What a strange thing to judge people on

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 11/04/2020 11:46

but she was fascinated with the that we won't be having a roast dinner tomorrow

And you seem fascinated with her eating habits too. Shocker, people like and do different things!

Ps your chicken with flatbread, tzatziki and Greek salad sounds lovely 😋

GrimDamnFanjo · 11/04/2020 11:46

Surely food is an individual choice? For many it's a ritual that has meaning beyond the actual menu.

ChanklyBore · 11/04/2020 11:46

You do you

PurpleDaisies · 11/04/2020 11:46

People eat differently.

That’s it.

Is that really a surprise? Confused

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 11/04/2020 11:46

Oh lord it's a stealth Braggy post
Hmm

Gatehouse77 · 11/04/2020 11:47

How is having a roast chicken not a roast dinner?

RedRed9 · 11/04/2020 11:47

I’m curious as to why you posted this as an aibu when it sounds like idle chat.

Obviously neither of you abu.

I0NA · 11/04/2020 11:50

So you are old enough to have two children but you didn’t know that people eat differently.

Ok.

Pipandmum · 11/04/2020 11:50

What is a roast chicken if not, well, a roast? So you have different sides but you are having what I would consider a summer roast.
Be that as it may, everyone, thank goodness, is different. We don't do takeaway or a roast dinner every week, and breakfast can be a smoothie or eggs on toast, but my friend makes pancakes every single day and always has a roast on a sunday.
But I'm curious as to why your friend can't have a lamb roast tomorrow? I got a leg of lamb this week (plenty about and it was one third off) and I'm looking forward to a traditional Easter dinner!

user1487194234 · 11/04/2020 11:50

Each to their own
We have a takeaway once a week, eat out about 3 x week (not at the moment obviously) and I usually cook a 'proper' dinner, often but not always a roast on Sunday

Sonichu · 11/04/2020 11:51

Congratulations.

Namechangedforthisreply7 · 11/04/2020 11:52

No one is being unreasonable in choosing what they want to eat. It sounds like you really think your friend is being unreasonable which, of course, she’s not.

okiedokieme · 11/04/2020 11:53

Do what works for you - we are having a roast

RedskyAtnight · 11/04/2020 11:54

So you eat food that you like and is appropriate for your family's needs.

And she eats food that she likes and is appropriate for her family.

Remind me what the issue is?

ScarfLadysBag · 11/04/2020 11:55

Surely it's just different people have different lives and eat different stuff? We tend to have a fry-up or similar at weekends, we don't have takeaways but that's just because we live rurally and there are barely any. And we love a roast dinner!

But if you have a child with eating issues then obviously you have to adapt. My DD currently eats anything so that's not a consideration.

PerpendicularVincent · 11/04/2020 11:55

I don't see the reason for confusion; she eats what she wants and you eat what you want. Neither of you is better than the other.

On that basis, YABU for comparing food habits. Are you looking for praise?

Cheerbear23 · 11/04/2020 11:56

YABU to use the phrase ‘it repeats on me’. It’s particularly unpleasant and makes you sound about 80 and dirty.

😂😂😂 oh my god, how grumpy. Why does it make the OP sound ‘dirty’?

JazzyTheDog · 11/04/2020 11:56

What’s a fry up? Bacon, sausages eggs etc?

PurpleDaisies · 11/04/2020 11:57

Ok, taking this in a more lighthearted spirit...

We hardly ever have a full “Sunday roast” because there’s only two of us and we’re veggie and vegan. Also, after church there isn’t enough time. I quite like having a filling traditional type meal on a Sunday though. We often will have pies/sausages with mash and gravy, or a casserole, that sort of thing. Then Sunday evening is usually beans or toast or soup so we can get to the evening service. I’m keeping that up because it’s nice for Sunday to feel sort of normal.

Takeaways probably average once a week/fortnight. I am absolutely craving chips from the chip shop now.

Saturday morning we often have something cooked for brunch. No meat but stuff like mushrooms on toast, or pancakes, croissants etc with the newspaper and Saturday kitchen. Because of the veg box we’re getting, I’m making industrial quantities of bubble and squeak. New favourite!
