To not have a takeaway, roast dinner or dry up every week?

I was talking to a good friend yesterday about Easter, especially with the current situation. She mentioned that she's gutted she can't have her usual lamb roast dinner this Easter. I said we had a dinner last weekend so doubt we'd have one for Easter. Conversation then extended into roast dinners every week come hell or high water, weekend takeaways and fry ups, etc.

She has a takeaway every Friday, cooked breakfast every Saturday and a roast dinner every single Sunday, even during a heatwave. Her family have been this way since she moved in with her partner. They now have two boys 9 and 7. Neither particularly enjoy a dinner but will eat meat and Yorkshires with gravy. They can afford a takeaway most weeks but aren't loaded. It works for them.

We, however, rarely eat these things. I don't enjoy greasy food first thing in the morning, it repeats on me. I will have eggs on toast occasionally. Takeaways are for days like Mother's/Father's Day, rare night off, celebrations. I like a dinner but not every week. I find it a huge faff, a good couple hours of cooking, lots of washing up, and all eaten in no time at all. I'd honestly rather have pasta for a quick/easy/lazy meal. To add, my children are still small. My 3 year old has a restricted diet (ASD) and doesn't touch meat or veg, the baby will. Neither like pancakes, despite a few attempts, I won't give them takeaways yet due to salt content. They will however, happily wolf down homemade pizzas, and peanut butter on toast instead of a fry up.

Light-hearted conversation but she was fascinated with the that we won't be having a roast dinner tomorrow. We are having roast chicken, homemade flatbreads, tzatziki, and, Greek salad with feta.

So, AIBU to not have takeaway, cooked breakfast or a roast dinner every week? Do any of you? Just curious.

Of course you are not unreasonable. Eat what to want, when you want to - you don't have to justify it to anyone.

As for us, it's rare we have a fry up, because I'm just lazy.
We have a takeaway, a)if I can afford it, b) I really don't be bothered to cook, am ill, or just feel like it c) It's late, I'm cleaning the kitchen, I've not gone shopping

As for the roast dinner every week, again, we don't really. It depends on the weather (cant eat something like that in the height of summer)
if I have the time and if I have everything in that I need for that meal.

We're not having a roast on Sunday, because well, we just don't want to. I'm not sure what we'll have...I've got some mince that needs using up, so I may make either burgers or kebabs with them. Not sure yet.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/04/2020 12:14

Anyone else now craving a fry up?

Just me?

Gigabitten · 11/04/2020 12:15

No, but these threads usually do make me hungry. I've lost my appetite at the moment.

milveycrohn · 11/04/2020 12:16

You aren't having roast dinner, but you are having roast chicken?
Just eat what you want (or what is available in the shops, during Lockdown, though my DH has managed to get most stuff).
Different families like different food.

We’re eating the same as always, luckily we have a fabulous, well stocked butcher (who now does veg boxes too). I know we’re lucky.

We had bacon butties this morning, a weekend treat a couple of times a month. Tomorrow is a fab leg of lamb. We might even have a Chinese on Monday night. Nothing has really changed for us (yet).

KatherineJaneway · 11/04/2020 12:17

Each family has their own meal habits in my experience.

Cacaca · 11/04/2020 12:17

Are you coming back to brag that she’s giving her kids Easter eggs when naturally you absolutely won’t be - regardless of their ages.

raspberryk · 11/04/2020 12:17

I don't understand why your friend can't have roast lamb tomorrow, we are.

Reginabambina · 11/04/2020 12:18

I haven’t had a roast since Christmas. I’ve never cooked one (barring helping out when someone else is in charge). I rarely have a cooked breakfast, don’t think I’ve had one this year (again I generally prefer leaving the cooking to someone else). We do have delivered food quite often though but not necessarily every week and it’s more of a thing we do because we feel like eating something specific rather than as a Friday night/other assigned time thing.

Chickenwing · 11/04/2020 12:20

Repeats on me is a disgusting expression.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/04/2020 12:20

YABU to use the phrase ‘it repeats on me’. It’s particularly unpleasant and makes you sound about 80 and dirty.

WTAF?!? What exactly should I be saying as most food does actually repeat on me. If someone could tell me the correct terminology that would be handy. Another only on MN moment!

IvinghoeBeacon · 11/04/2020 12:21

Why would anyone be considered unreasonable in either scenario? We rarely have takeaways but that’s just because it doesn’t fit in with our household right now. I don’t care if others do. I like a cooked breakfast and I think it’s a great way to set me up for the day, whether during the week or at the weekend, but we rarely manage it.

As a child we used to have a roast lunch of some description on a Sunday, partly because the leftovers could then be used at some point during the working week. If we go to my parents’ on a Sunday then we usually still get a roast, not because they have one every week on their own, but because it’s an easy way to feed a crowd.

I’m more flexible with what counts as a roast and I would definitely class roast chicken plus mezze side dishes as a Sunday lunch type roast. Tomorrow we’re having beef topside, mainly so we can have cold beef during the week (my favourite!) but I haven’t decided what to have with it yet

Biscuit 😴😴😴

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 11/04/2020 12:21

Ha! As if.
Nice food brag. Good work on the imaginary friend.
4* still needs bit of work.

On a serious note. Everyone can eat what they won't. Sunday roast actually isn't in theory as unhealthy as some make it out. I am having a version of roast on Monday. It's a tradition so I get why people want to stick to it. I would say kudos for eating healthily. It's a good thing. But you don't deserve it for being judgy towards people not eating like a perfect healthy cookbook through the character of your imaginary friend

turnandfacethenamechange · 11/04/2020 12:22

Do you want an applaud?

I was thinking this Grin

shineaflight · 11/04/2020 12:22

Lol. Sounds like you think your food is superior Grin

It's just food. Homemade flatbreads take longer to prepare and are messier than a roast dinner

IvinghoeBeacon · 11/04/2020 12:23

Wait a week, have roast lamb plus Greek sides, call it celebrating Greek Easter.

WeAllHaveWings · 11/04/2020 12:23

We have a chicken or beef roast dinner at least once a week, but it is normally mid week when we have a later meal because ds is out at the gym and likes a big chunk of protein with some veg when he gets back.

A basic roast dinner is no faff at all, bung the meat in the oven for an hour or two, slice and serve with some veg. A homemade pizza (assuming homemade means you make base from scratch and its a balanced meal not just tomato paste and grated cheese) needs much more prep, just takes less time in oven.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/04/2020 12:23

Do you want an applaud?

Well I suppose we do clap for anything these days so why not?

HoffiCoffi13 · 11/04/2020 12:24

Reginabambina I’m 35 and have never once cooked a roast either! If we have one DH does it.

PurpleDaisies · 11/04/2020 12:24

Homemade flatbreads take longer to prepare and are messier than a roast dinner.

You’re doing flatbreads wrong! I use Jamie oliver’s three ingredient recipe and they’re so easy.

marmitepasta · 11/04/2020 12:24

STEALTH BOAST ALERT! 😆

koshkatt · 11/04/2020 12:25

So you are having roast chicken? Hmm

I do not eat meat and think that pasta is a a flabby carb that I can do without so I am not a fan of either of your diets.

But then I wouldn't start a thread about it. Get over yourself OP.

Runningjayne · 11/04/2020 12:25

We have a roast atleast once a week, often twice, we love them. Maybe you're making them poorly op (joke!). We have a takeaway once a month and fry ups regularly. We're farmers and often dh has a quick bowl of cereal at 5am and is starving by 9/10 so I do him a big breakfast

Solina · 11/04/2020 12:25

I love a roast, it is my favourite dinner and therefore we have one once a week during cooler months. Not as often during summer though just because we prefer lighter food in the hot weather. If it wasn't my favourite I imagine we wouldn't have roast as often. It is almost always chicken or veggie though, I don't like lamb, OH doesnt like gammon or pork and we cant be bothered with beef as they are always such big joints.

We have takeaway once a week/2 weeks too just because we don't fancy cooking. Usually pizza, burgers or chinese.

Don't have a fry up very often but will have something a bit more time consuming than toast or cereal for breakfast on weekends.

I think a lot of people will have whatever their favourite meals are during the weekend.
