Why are teachers not teaching live lessons online

This is not a teacher bashing thread.

Talking online with another mum in my son’s class today, both ourDCs are in p1 (Scotland). She is outraged that teachers next term will be posting work online rather than actually teaching using Zoom etc. Her argument is that universities are doing it so why aren’t teachers? And how is she supposed to work from home and educate her children?

Personally I don’t think teaching a bunch of 5 year olds a live lesson using Zoom is going to be all that effective and would probably require quite a lot of supervision anyway. AIBU to think that tasks posted online are quite sufficient given the circumstances? So as not to drip feed, I am also working from home with 2DCs.

Really really glad l don’t teach in a private school with parents like you it must be a nightmare!

Actually, you would like parents like me - my dc are model pupils who win prizes and awards, I attend school events, volunteer when asked, send pleasant emails with queries once or twice a year and smile at parents' evenings... Grin

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 17:31

So Clav to be fair, your school also furloughs its teachers and your kids use the BBC.Yes?

No, they are having a full (on-line) timetable but it wasn't me who first suggested teachers should be furloughed - I just made a few suggestions as to how it could work.

canigooutyet · 11/04/2020 17:31

That's what I though Noble, just confused about Clavs claim about schools opening in July/August.

Since double-checked because changes have passed me by whilst on forums lol.

Yea 8 hours ago latest news included important words such as may and could. And quickly changes the narrative to one where something has been confirmed. Why people post, bs like this is beyond me.,

from 20th April, although it's going to be very relaxed I imagine. Those pupils also get to attend proper school in July and August.

noblegiraffe · 11/04/2020 17:33

Right Clav, so what you’re happily suggesting will only apply to other people’s children and you wouldn’t be happy for it to apply to your own. Just so we’re clear.

noblegiraffe · 11/04/2020 17:35

Oh Clav you mean you’ve never been tempted to bring up whether teachers are paid for the holidays in real life? What a treat they are missing out on.

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 17:35

If my dc had to attend their private school in July and August instead I wouldn't mind - usually they have 8 weeks holiday.

noblegiraffe · 11/04/2020 17:38

Is it air conditioned?

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 17:39

Oh Clav you mean you’ve never been tempted to bring up whether teachers are paid for the holidays in real life?

Actually, I bit my tongue this time - although there was a mild altercation between other posters.

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 17:42

Is it air conditioned?

Some classrooms are but not all.

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 17:51

Oh Clav you mean you’ve never been tempted to bring up whether teachers are paid for the holidays in real life?

Sorry, I misread your post - not in real life, no - I think my dcs' teachers are pretty fab. How can I complain about teachers who turn out for sports teams at the weekend, week in, week out for hundreds of pupils (A teams to D/E teams)?

canigooutyet · 11/04/2020 17:58

Ah so you said the schools would be open in July/August like is was for definite because that is what you prefer?

Okay then. You don't even know for sure when things will happen just like the rest of us. How about volunteering to do a teachers job for a month is it's all so easy peasy? You seem to have many ideas. If it could be arranged what would stop you? Nothing right? You could teach the class and all the work of a teacher for an entire month, plus of course oversee the education of your own children. Whilst simultaneously creating new content to upload and everything about it.

An, of course, you wouldn't mind some pesky person randomly popping on to observe the lesson and of course let all the parents and pupils maintain the same level of contact teachers are having at the moment.

Iateallthecookies000 · 11/04/2020 18:05

If the holidays were taken away I can guarantee that probably half of all teaching staff would leave. Then who would teach the kids?

School teachers you have my respect and admiration. No way could I deal with the idiots in here in real life.

noblegiraffe · 11/04/2020 18:09

Clav you are paying for that level of service.

Like saying that your school’s teachers are ‘fab’ for providing online lessons and daily contact. That’s not them being ‘fab’ out of the kindness of their hearts. That’s doing what their head is directing them to do because of a business need.

I’m doing what my head is directing me to do. She has serious safeguarding concerns and has said no to online lessons. Apparently that makes me less of a fab teacher in your eyes. Hmm

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 18:17

Ah so you said the schools would be open in July/August like is was for definite because that is what you prefer?

I don't prefer it at all. I only continued with my suggestion because other posters kept asking questions/making comments.

You could teach the class and all the work of a teacher for an entire month, plus of course oversee the education of your own children. Whilst simultaneously creating new content to upload and everything about it.

Not me, but my dcs' teachers appear to be coping just fine with lessons online/Google meet or whatever they are using - more or less a full timetable the week before they broke up for Easter.

oversee the education of your own children

Yes, I imagine it's very difficult to manage teaching and overseeing the education of your own child at the same time.

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 18:22

That’s not them being ‘fab’ out of the kindness of their hearts.

Many teachers have gone 'above and beyond' - I'm not going to give details because it would be outing. Perhaps these teachers really care or perhaps are very ambitious and want something for their CV - I don't mind either way.

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 18:23

perhaps they are

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 18:26

She has serious safeguarding concerns and has said no to online lessons.

Although I did mention earlier that one of ds2's teachers has turned off her camera - the pupils can only hear her voice.

Beebie2 · 11/04/2020 18:31

@clavinova after all your crap and teacher bashing, I’m so insanely happy to tell you, that pandemic is detailed in my contract Grin I get full pay.

On full lockdown, I’ll continue as I am, teaching online and taking my turn in the hub - unless of course they close (thankfully my parents are very happy and keep sending me lovely messages) a full lockdown, in my LEA won’t change anything for teachers, soz

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 18:32

If the holidays were taken away I can guarantee that probably half of all teaching staff would leave. Then who would teach the kids?

My suggestion was that teachers could be furloughed in April, May and June (with no work to do) - the teachers who volunteered to look after key worker/vulnerable children in school would still get their summer break. Everyone would get a 2 week break at the beginning of September as well.

Tonyaster · 11/04/2020 18:35

Clav who gives a shit about your opinion on how state schools should be managed? Your little darlings go private

It's exactly this kind of comment that means I'd never spend money on this site.

Beebie2 · 11/04/2020 18:35

@clavinova do you have any reason to believe that’s what the DfE are going to do with holidays? Or is this your own personal solution?

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 18:38

after all your crap and teacher bashing

You don't like my 'teacher bashing' on other threads because I embarrass you by backing up my points with links to teaching unions and government departments - disproving what you have just posted.

Beebie2 · 11/04/2020 18:42
Grin

So what’s your ‘evidence’ for the holidays?

Clavinova · 11/04/2020 18:42

do you have any reason to believe that’s what the DfE are going to do with holidays? Or is this your own personal solution?

It was my own personal solution but I joined a discussion about furloughing teachers.

Beebie2 · 11/04/2020 18:43

Ah ok, have you spoken to the DfE?
