To say... it's a fucking VIRUS

The number of posts on here about how the NHS have recommended "antibac" no they haven't. I wipe it with "antibac" why would you. I can't find any "antibac" handwash, you don't fucking need it.

AIBU to hope that people can learn the difference between a fucking virus and a bacteria. If it was a bacteria it would be called CORONA fucking BACTERIA!!!!

In any case "antibac" is a waste of time and money, use soap and water. FML.

You might have a better chance of getting your point across if you didn't detract DP far away from the content of your posts by being so rude and up your own soapy arsehole.

chomalungma · 09/04/2020 22:47

You want to tell everyone that anything that says "antibac" will kill Coronavirus? Crack on

If it contains surfactants on the label.
Or if it's high enough alcohol

Do you think that something that contains surfactants will kill Coronavirus?

I would be confident it does.

Schuyler · 09/04/2020 22:49

Why so aggressive? The vast majority fully understand that the coronavirus is a virus, hence the name. Some people say “antibac” as shorthand. You’re not the only genius in the world.

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 22:50

So anything that says "antibac". Literally anything @chomalungma ? You're going to put your name to that?

@JoeExotic this is AIBU.

OP posts:
ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 22:50

@Schuyler who said I was a genius?

As I have said.

Do you think that surfactants kill viruses?

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 22:52

And @chomalungma there we find the problem. As I said before, not everyone will or can read the surfactant properties. Therefore saying "antibac" is useful is not true.

As people on here will have read, they will have seen that it has been very well pointed out that anti-bacterials which contain surfactants or high enough alcohol will kill viruses.

The only person who is saying the phrase "antibacterials kill viruses" without further context is yourself.

mantlepiece · 09/04/2020 23:01

We are isolating due to health conditions.
Like a previous poster I identified Milton sterilising fluid as my preferred option.
I make up a bowlful and wipe down shopping delivery and surfaces and doorknobs after storing said items.
Horses for courses, but I feel as safe as I can be with this option. The antibacterial sprays etc didn’t fill me with the same confidence.

I am not a scientist! Haha

EasyPleasey · 09/04/2020 23:08

Yanbu. There are a lot of stupid people about.

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 23:10

@chomalungma you're starting to sound like trump. You've said that "antibac" kills viruses and you have said this without the qualifier "some". You can't project that that onto me.

OP posts:
Bobleywobley · 09/04/2020 23:13

Only thing to definitely kill covid 19 is 70%+ alcohol gel/wipes, bleach or washing with soap and water. Nothing else is proven. Some antibac wipes can kill old coronavirus viruses but not proven to kill covid 19 yet.

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 23:14

@bobleywobley yep.

OP posts:
Quarantina · 09/04/2020 23:16

I must say you're coming across as very Trumpian yourself OP.

Person: A lot of antibacs are effective, it depends on the active ingredients

OP: Mmm, so what you're saying is that all antibacs are effective? Why would you say that?

chomalungma · 09/04/2020 23:20

ou're starting to sound like trump. You've said that "antibac" kills viruses and you have said this without the qualifier "some". You can't project that that onto me

So let's see - this is what I have said and the times

1900 An anti-bacterial hand gel which contains 70% ethanol should kill the virus as well

1907 And that certain anti-bacterials can kill the virus by making it inactive as well

1925 True - but if soap and water is not available, then there are products that are marketed as anti-bacterial that are also anti-virus.

But not all anti-bacterial can do that

2043 Do you think that some, if not most anti-bacterial products, are going to be effective against viruses?

2124 If it's a hand gel or wipe, then look for the alcohol content.

If it's a disinfectant, does it contain surfactants?

Samtsirch · 09/04/2020 23:24

@ArtisanBreadBin
So are you actually trying to say that this is a virus?
I was under the impression it was a bacterial infection?

chomalungma · 09/04/2020 23:26

Just saying

To say... it's a fucking VIRUS
Samtsirch · 09/04/2020 23:26

@ArtisanBreadBin
If only you’d posted this last October 😊

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 23:26

@chomalungma ok, cool. So you're happy to recommend "antibac" to everyone based on the fact that "most" could prefect against Coronavirus? Just checking what your thresholds are.

OP posts:
chomalungma · 09/04/2020 23:29

ok, cool

Was that you saying that your reading comprehension skills are poor and you did in fact misinterpret what I wote?

I know it's hard to say 'sorry'. I guess your cognitive biases were showing when you were reading without thinking or listening to an alternate point of view.

Which is a bit ironic considering your views on how people don't read labels.

cheesemongery · 09/04/2020 23:32

An up to page 5 summary:

OP posts telling everybody they are thick.

Everybody says we're good with soap and disinfectants and gels with 70% + alcohol as advised.

Not one poster says - why thank you for your post OP, I've been such a dickhead for not realising a viral infection and a bacterial infection were two different things.

OP still calls everybody thick.

chomalungma · 09/04/2020 23:33

2138 I can only conclude you are being deliberately obtuse or your comprehension skills are poor.

Back at you with that.

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 23:35

In your first post on this thread you said "certain" antibac will kill the virus. I'd love you love you to narrow down what "certain" means.

OP posts:
Inkpaperstars · 09/04/2020 23:35

Yes I am interested to know, if cleaning things with soapy water..is a certain concentration of soap needed? Do you have to change the cloth all the time or will the soap on the cloth destroy it as you go along? Do you have 20 seconds contact with each area before moving on?

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 23:35

@cheesemongery where have I called anyone thick. Please show me.
