Just that really.

OP posts:
aquashiv · 10/04/2020 13:57

Just been to check out reddit.. it looks rather overwhelming. Lots off talk about sex and being fat.

Inappropriatefemale · 10/04/2020 13:59

@aquashiv there are hundreds of threads on Reddit so I am unsure why you just seen sexual threads? What did you type in?! Lol.

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2020 14:00

Ha aquashiv I’ve not looked

I’m going cold turkey if this folds. No more typing to make others £

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/04/2020 14:01

That's news to me - I am sure I have seen that happen on quite a few threads in the past
Sockpuppeting has never been allowed, so if you have seen people doing it the same rules would have applied to them as well.
Think MN is pre-moderated - as in posts get deleted only if they're reported - so maybe a few didn't get picked up on

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2020 14:03

I doubt Reddit’s post was reported so maybe they did have an eye on her. I’ve never seen them say ‘sock puppet ahoy!’ before for one change either. Not their usual tone.

Frankiecandle · 10/04/2020 14:04

There are 1000s of subs on Reddit. You just have to find the ones that interest you.

Admittedly there are some dodgy subs, but you don't have to join them.

ElspethFlashman · 10/04/2020 14:06

Reddit is awesome.

It does take some getting used to, and initially I was confused.

Top Tips:

You start off with default categories. Unfollow any you don't like straight off as they just clutter up your page.

Actually follow and unfollow different subbreddits with unabashed abandon - it's a bit like Instagram in that sense. You have to make it your own little world. I don't have that many subbreddits now, maybe 20? But it means that I enjoy everything I see.

When you click into a post, sort by Best or Top Comments. The funniest stuff is there, the trolly shit has sunk to the bottom from people downvoting it.

Finally, on your actual feed, sort by Rising. You see posts when there's few comments and can begin a good back and forth as more people come across the post over the day. (you will get a notification when someone answers)

Likefootball · 10/04/2020 14:10

Probably none, mumsnet is good.

LaurieMarlow · 10/04/2020 14:12

Ideally none, but probably Reddit.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/04/2020 14:16

I’ve never seen them say ‘sock puppet ahoy!’ before for one change either. Not their usual tone.

I'm fecking glad I'm not a mod lol.
They can't win.
They explain why they've made a decision after somebody basically asking "why what did I do?" they tell her, and in some eyes it's automatically a personal vendetta of watching her, even if have been posting links to her own board, and name changing to boot.
It's not "OMG they're after me, the rules apply to everyone!
I once posted years ago a link to my blog (was relevant to the thread) and it pretty swiftly got removed.
It's always been frowned upon in other words.

GoldDay · 10/04/2020 14:19

'Reddit is awesome.'

Some of the subs are funny. Sadly the admin are a joke and people get suspended and banned excessively. It has lots of porn, misogyny/incel and other dodgy sites yet they are very heavy handed with anyone saying someone is talking bollocks. It's an American site and their excitable admin take themselves very seriously.

Carbosug · 10/04/2020 14:20

Does anyone know of a forum for adults who enjoy reading children's books?

Some of my happiest memories of MN are the lovely discussions about The Chalet School, Noel Streatfeild, Enid Blyton etc and the mad invented scenarios we all used to come up with Smile

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2020 14:21

Ok Wotcha carry on lol.

I’ll leave you to it.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/04/2020 14:23

Ooh, I'd love a forum that discussed children's books!
Have started watching Malory Towers, used to love those books and basically all Enid Blyton as a kid Smile

DameHannahRelf · 10/04/2020 14:25

www.goodreads.com

www.reddit.com/r/childrensbooks/

For discussions about childrens books?

flirtygirl · 10/04/2020 14:29

I'll be staying at mumsnet. I wont be paying for it though.

I don't like the flow of reddit and upvoting etc. Pistonheads has come up from Google a few times but seems very male dominated and men can be just as bitchy.

Net mums has always been crap, quora is just a bunch of wierd answers and not really a discussion.

MSe is okay but not the same range of subjects. I used to love handbag.com a very long time ago and had forgotten about it. Never been to any of the others like tatler, etc

I won't seek out an alternative if mumsnet dies, I will just step away fully. I don't do any social media so Its my norm.

Mumsnet is not social media as its anonymous, its discussion, isn't it? thats how I view it anyway.

Reddit does have a few silly rules that make no sense, on one of the Watts murders’ subs then you weren’t allowed to mention a point twice and there was a few other silly rules that made folks leave it and I don’t blame them to be honest, the mod was able to make her own rules, for the sub, as she went!

Inappropriatefemale · 10/04/2020 15:04

Quora is very fucking weird and there are so many perverts on it and they were all from the same country funnily enough, sending messages to attractive females and asking for sex chat outright, as bloody if!Shock

Frankiecandle · 10/04/2020 15:09

Mods on Reddit subs are volunteers, they can ban you from the subreddit ,which all have their own rules, but not Reddit, only Reddit Admin can ban you from Reddit.

Reddit Admin are a bit hit and miss though.

Inappropriatefemale · 10/04/2020 15:32

Do any mods on any sites get paid? I ask because on some sites then it seems like all the mods do is pull someone up about something or other and I always wonder what the hell they get out of being a mod and especially when they’re putting so much time into the job!

Frankiecandle · 10/04/2020 16:12

No the mods on Reddit don't get paid. They do on MN though. I have no idea about other sites.

Ninkanink · 10/04/2020 16:16

It’s just student leadership syndrome, isn’t it. Some people love to police other people and that doesn’t change outside of school.

(Being harsh, here - not saying all mods are like that! But it explains why some people might do it for free.)

BacklashStarts · 10/04/2020 16:28

I don’t like Reddit. It’s a fucking mess to look at and use and they use the up and down voting to silence dissenting voices.

ElspethFlashman · 10/04/2020 16:57

Yeah but there's so many subbreddits that you're gonna find a home for your dissenting voice.
