Pinterest, Instagram (I only discovered this fairly recently), & Reddit (which I’ve briefly lurked on but it’s massive & confusing. But then, so was MN at first.) No way am I paying to have some random report me & get me banned for correctly identifying biological features of a fellow human. The adverts don’t bother me at all & I’ve switched quite a few brands because of things I’ve seen on MN over the years.

I suspect I’d also spend more time actually doing stuff.

DameHannahRelf · 10/04/2020 01:53

Probably reddit (which I use anyway sometimes).

Highlandyak · 10/04/2020 01:57

I'm on Reddit most of the time these days rather then MN, there's a sub for pretty much any interest you can think of.

C8H10N4O2 · 10/04/2020 09:22

BUT it's predominantly a US site, primarily a younger, socialist leaning, more male dominated crowd. That's in my experience anyway. So the demographics are different - but the demographics do vary depending on what subreddits you frequent

I agree with the last part of this - demographics vary massively. There are huge numbers of right leaning subs, older subs but like most online platforms - if you want another woman centred forum you need to pick your sub very carefully, but that is the case on most platforms.

Key difference really is that reddit is a platform where anyone can create a sub/forum of their own, with their own moderating rules.

You can also use more than one name attached to an account (although not on one sub) so you can have one user for work related interests, one for non work if you like to keep things seperated.

I look on casual uk, unresolved mysteries, british problems on Reddit

RingtheBells · 10/04/2020 11:15

Reddit, MSE, Digital Spy.

I prefer MSE out of these

MumsNestTest · 10/04/2020 11:36

My post has been removed, I'm not sure why. It was a link to reddit, why is that banned?

MumsNestTest · 10/04/2020 11:44

So, mumsnet don't want us organising outside of here.

"We can see you've been quite vocal on several threads about your feelings about the new premium membership, which is absolutely fine - we're taking on board everyone's views and accept that there's going to be a wide range of feelings about it. But we don't think it's really on to be spamming your new site on our site, so we've deleted the link and would be grateful if you don't post any more links to your site."

Reddit isn't my site, I've simply started a board for mumsnetters to test out reddit for themselves.

Bearnecessity · 10/04/2020 11:45

I read Mumsnet occasionally, active conversing feels too much like dipping your toes in a pool of piranha.

GoldDay · 10/04/2020 11:56

Isn't this all in bad taste? Sure, post elsewhere but to promote and even link to alternatives on the very site that is struggling in these current financially challenging times seems harsh.

Reddit also has a premium membership option, why are people so critical of mumsnet trying the same?

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2020 12:02

GoldDay what do you get on there v here for £?

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2020 12:04

Although it’s a moot point for me I post on here over other sites because it’s simple without bells and whistles so it’s a really bad offer in any case.

Added to that that it’s a bad habit I could do without. And it’s not really that supportive some good posters but equal amount if not.

I think it’s fine for people to list where they’ll go instead. Probably can’t get away with linking, but people can find it if talked about.

Everyexitisanentrance · 10/04/2020 12:05

Yes MSE is good

GoldDay · 10/04/2020 12:11

'what do you get on there v here for £?'
Don't know tbh but I believe it isn't compulsory and a free option will continue. Post here or don't, but all the 'how dare they try a premium option' posts on the other threads when many other sites offer the exact same thing seems odd.

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2020 12:13

It’s probably because what they are offering is of so little value.

MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2020 12:15

And they’ve muddied it with some kind of message about being a public service. Ill-conceived at best

NotMeNoNo · 10/04/2020 12:30

I nearly deregistered last night because MN seems to have become a bickering whingeing echo chamber of neurotic people or keyboard warriors. MN got me through some tough times with DC but Im in quite a few specialist FB groups for autism etc now.

But then I read the "describe your job badly" thread and it reminded me of the old days!

Luc1nda · 10/04/2020 12:34

I still can’t figure out reddit. Why can everyone else? Is my brain atrophying?

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 10/04/2020 12:54

I've only ever visited Tattlelife when it's been linked on here and promptly clicked off again.
Bitchy, gossipy, plain nasty tearing people down stuff and can't be arsed with that

I completely maintain it’s no MN - I clearly recall being a stressed out mum of a newborn and a 18 month old and got hung out to dry when I mentioned that I didn’t wash every day and was BFing. Instead of support and advice I hit eviscerated for being a soap dodger. It was National Cunt Day I think.

And that was on Chat... not AIBU

Inappropriatefemale · 10/04/2020 12:55

Reddit is brilliant for true crime discussions whereas MN is not.

I have been following the Watts case, Chris Watts of Colorado, US killed his pregnant wife, Shan’Ann, and their 2 little girls aged 4 and 3, Bella & Celeste, back in August 2018 and omfg I have never seen so many threads, (or whatever you call them on Reddit) about one case, you can go right into the discussion and the crime, and talk about the dynamics of the Watts’ marriage before the awful murders, it’s not just a case of she was an angel/he was the devil, whereas I have seen a thread on MN about this case and that’s the extent of what was said about the case, Reddit goes right into it and as a true crime fan then that’s amazing to me, I went on Reddit one day to read their threads on the case and over 16 months later then I’m still reading new threads about the case!

FeelLykShitJustWantMacciesBack · 10/04/2020 13:03

Reddit

It's 10000% times better and isn't full of pearl-clutching weirdos. Plus, it'll be free whereas we're expected to want to stump up a fiver for "mumsnet premium" trololol please no.

Yes it should've just been aannounced that, like many other sites, a premium upgrade would be introduced. Posters could then edit, hide posters or even like posts for example. Some have been thrilled by the financial difficulties mentioned and the sneering has taking over.
