Have you cut your own hair or anyone else's and it has gone wrong. I did my fringe and it's now a bit wonky Grin

I cut dd2s last week, it was down to her hips and I took about 6 inches off on a bit of a whim. It actually looked pretty good so I got a bit cocky and had a go at dd1s next.... well, let's just say I'm glad we are in isolation so no one has to see it. I've revisited it with the scissors about 5 times since and it's still on the wonk. Dd1 keeps saying "I've found another long bit mom" 😳

YouDoYou18 · 08/04/2020 21:07

I did my fringe today! It’s slightly uneven but I’m not surprised as I did it with kitchen scissors, but I love it Grin

Stickybeaksid · 08/04/2020 21:14

Cut my Dhs hair. It’s awful. I thought a blade 4 all over would be easy but he looks like his hair was cut by a very intoxicated person (I had a few drinks to calm my nerves)

Sparklesocks · 08/04/2020 21:15

I was planning on attempting my fringe at the weekend. I’m scared!! But the good news is nobody will see it for ages anyway 😁

dudsville · 08/04/2020 21:16

I'm very excited as my oh has just announced i can cut his hair tomorrow! I have no skills!!!!

k1233 · 08/04/2020 21:17

The only tip I can give is watch your attitude. My fringe was pissing me off one morning, so I went in with a "die fringe die" attitude. By the time I saw my hairdresser it still hadn't recovered and she roused at me LOL

kayakingmum · 08/04/2020 21:20

I did my 9 month old baby's hair yesterday. His hair at the top of his hair was really long so my partner tied it into a top knot to keep it out of his eyes. I snipped it off a bit later.

His hair looks much better as a result.

It's probsbly a weird thing to do but I've put the cutting in a zip lock bag to keep for sentimental value.

@kayakingmum traditionally a curl from babies head could have been kept in a silver locket around your neck

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 08/04/2020 21:26

Get one of these. Take your time making sure it's securely clipped in and level, then use electric clippers to zip along the bottom of the guide and it cuts really nice and neat.

There's lots of YouTube videos.

Curiosity101 · 08/04/2020 21:28

Fortunately, my husband's haircut went ok - but the funny thing about it was that we had to use beard trimmers! It's all we had (unless I was feeling brave enough to attempt a scissor cut). It took forever to do as his hair had gotten quite long Grin. I cut my own hair all the time (after lots of practice and watching YouTube videos), but I was super nervous to do his.

I did a 6 on the sides, 8 at the crown going into the top and a 12 on top. If I were to give advice to other people cutting their own (or loved ones) hair, watch a video or two on YouTube before trying and make them agree to a verbal disclaimer. Grin

mullyluo · 08/04/2020 21:29

I've cut ds hair, he wouldnt keep still so its his own fault its wonky. Its curly anyway so it still looks good, even with the random long sections. Thank god ds2 only has wispy baby hair.

justlikejasper · 08/04/2020 21:30

I tried to get 19 month old's hair the other day, quite possibly the worst decision i ever made! He turned his head as i was doing it and well he looks like he stuck his fringe in a paper shredder 🙈 thank god for isolation!

yumscrumfatbum · 08/04/2020 21:56

Nobody in my family has requested a haircut as yet. I have however been trimming the dog! I did a reasonable job on his beard. It's a bit wonky but he hasn't complained!

FizzyPink · 08/04/2020 22:01

DP has Afro hair although it’s cut very very short usually. It grows extremely fast so he was keen for me to have a go at it and requested a fade.
Unfortunately we only have one size of clipper attachment so I was using those and the scissors. The attempted fade was getting higher and higher until I had to admit defeat, he now looks like a put a bowl on his head and shaved around it Blush
Fortunately he’s a fan of a hat!

venusandmars · 08/04/2020 22:31

I did my dh's hair. Watched several videos first.

It was mostly OK but too short on the front.

Minesacider · 08/04/2020 22:35

A few weeks ago, after having one too many glasses of wine, I decided to trim the back/sides of my hair. Just evening it out a bit because I'm growing it from a v short pixie and it was getting a bit mullety.

It all went fine until I forgot I had my headphones in and snipped clean through one of the wires Grin My hair was alright though!

mamaduckbone · 08/04/2020 22:39

Dh and I took to ds2's today as a team. Dh did the clippers up the back (he clippers his own anyway) and I cut the top with scissors. It's not actually too bad - not layered as much as it should be but not hideous.
Husband and wife barber team after lockdown I reckon...

browzingss · 08/04/2020 23:08

I have been binge watching YouTube videos, particularly hair colour bleaching fails Blush

WanderingLost167 · 08/04/2020 23:42

YouTube is your friend, I cut mine pre Xmas, and then layered it. Cut DDs too using a hair band technique.

And if in doubt, got a few weeks to grow it out lol

TeeniefaeTroon · 08/04/2020 23:54

My mum shaved the back of my dads head at one side, from the nape up to the bump bit. She was supposed to have went down his neck as there was no guard. I've never seen anything like it, my poor dad 😂😂
It's been left like that 😱

Thelnebriati · 08/04/2020 23:57

My fringe looks ok but I'mm struggling to do the back and I'm in danger of ending up with a mullet.

SpeedwellBlue · 09/04/2020 00:03

I always do my fringe in between hairdresser visits so no issues there. I cut dd1 (15 years old) yesterday and it's come out fine. Dd2 got hers done just before lockdown. Always used to do late dh's with clippers. I've been looking at versions of the mumsnet cut and was tempted (although not needed yet) but i realised the hair at the lowest part of the hairline at the back only goes half way up the back of my head so it's not long enough to do it.
These diy methods involving a hair elastic were tempting me

I couldn't stand the grey any longer and invested in a DIY semi permanent hair colour. I now have a really lovely aubergine hair colour ...... and random pink bits and a pink parting. Oh, and I still have the grey!
