To worry about schools opening after Easter

I am due back to work from maternity leave after Easter. My job can be done from home. DH is a teacher with a high risk condition currently working from home and my childcare is closed until further notice. AIBU to worry about childcare arrangements if schools reopen after Easter?

I really don't think it's going to happen as soon as that

moita · 08/04/2020 16:27

It won't happen

Potterspotter · 08/04/2020 16:27

Seems v unlikely to me too, the turnaround for schools to organise things means even mid May would be surprising.

KrisAkabusi · 08/04/2020 16:27

They won't

Bunnybigears · 08/04/2020 16:27

I wouldnt worry about that very unlikely to happen.

IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord · 08/04/2020 16:28

Do you mean to key workers kids or all kids in general?

Cabinfever10 · 08/04/2020 16:29

The government is not removing the lockdown.
Also school will be the last thing to open.
In Scotland we were told 14-16 weeks so after summer. England will be the same there just not saying so yet

cardibach · 08/04/2020 16:30

Not going to happen. Government cancelled exams - they wouldn’t have done that if they meant to open schools before they would have started.

thefourgp · 08/04/2020 16:30

I don’t think they’ll fully reopen until August

Mia1415 · 08/04/2020 16:30

I think it is very unlikely they will open after Easter. I think it will be June at the very earliest.

Thanks for your comments

I work in a SEN school, just before the schools closed it was really hard as half the staff were sent home to self-isolate for 12 weeks which meant those who were left had to double up classes etc. Luckily about half the children were off too.

If all our children case back it would be unsafe with half the staff.

I don’t think they can reopen schools before this 12 week self-isolation is over and that’s mid June.

ECBC · 08/04/2020 16:33

@IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord I meant all kids but most on here don’t seem to think that’s likely.

I am also worrying about schools opening after Easter. It keeps being reported in the Daily Fail and similar; yes, I shouldn't believe it but it frightens me. Ridiculous idea, schools should be the last to reopen when lockdown ends.

Look at Wuhan, they're just starting to open up a bit after 10 weeks of total isolation, travel and cautious movement etc. But their schools are still remaining firmly shut for the time being and that's after nearly 3 months. We should do the same....

Aragog · 08/04/2020 16:38

It is very unlikely. We wouldn't have enough staff once you take out the staff in at risk groups.

We couldn't practise social distancing in the classrooms. We have very low numbers in of key worker and vulnerable children right now but can still only fit 8 children in a classroom whilst still maintaining a 2m distance between them all.

My school's Easter holidays finishes this weekend. Term restarts on Tuesday 14th April. So there is no chance we will be returning in 6 days time.

Almahart · 08/04/2020 16:39

Not a chance I don't think

Merryoldgoat · 08/04/2020 16:43

Not a chance.

After May half-term absolute earliest I reckon.

pigsDOfly · 08/04/2020 16:44

If by after Easter you mean in a weeks time, that most certainly is not going to happen.

If though, you mean after Easter, as in 3 months times, that might be a bit more realistic, although September might be nearer the mark. Very much depends how things pan out and when testing gets going.

We haven't reach the peak of the virus yet. We're still in lockdown, there's no proper testing of front line staff, let alone the general population and we're still in the very early stages of try to get to grips with this thing and get control over it.

Going to be some time I would have thought until things even begin to start getting back to normal and children start going back to school.

Angelw · 08/04/2020 16:44

Very unlikely OP

IckyIsAFuckingStupidWord · 08/04/2020 16:47

No I agree the schools won’t reopen until September. They’ve cancelled SATs/GCSE’s/A Levels with this in mind.

tiredanddangerous · 08/04/2020 16:49

There’s absolutely no chance that the schools will
go back after Easter.

Greendin · 08/04/2020 16:49

The media are just speculating again, they need new things to write about and want to cause more panic when it's not needed. Both The Sun and the DM are claiming the schools could reopen in two weeks, who believes half of what they write.

The virus is predicted to peak in one to two weeks so the schools will not be opening in two weeks, at the peak of the pandemic.

bizmum1 · 08/04/2020 16:50

Maybe after summer half term but not before

celan · 08/04/2020 16:50

I would love them to.

Leaannb · 08/04/2020 16:51

This is the very last thing you need to worry about. Kids are not going back to school until the fall
