I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

‘However at the moment it's all Corona related hysterics so I am spending less time on here anyway.’

I have faith that it will be all parking threads (with diagrams) and cheeky fuckers again.

Selfisolationquery · 08/04/2020 15:30

I would be paying for content I am providing
I would be paying to talk with batshit people
The moderation is often SHIT
It’s a black hole that sucks my time. I have deactivated lots and get time back, then I rejoin for something specific and hang around wasting months of my life. I’m a TWAT But not so much of a twat that I’d pay for it.

This^^

Hoggleludo · 08/04/2020 15:30

Woah! I would of totally paid

But what's this about a staff member giving out people's data?!? Tell me more!

AlternativePerspective · 08/04/2020 15:30

Not a chance.

I think that in a different time, a different place MN could have introduced a premium service but their timing is completely inappropriate.

It seems comparable to those shops who are suddenly charging over the odds for products which are in short supply. It’s dishonest and lacks integrity.

Many people are being furlowed, are losing their jobs, and in truth the advertising revenue will pick up over time. MN has an annual turnover of £2m, compared to some of the small businesses which are going to go under that amount is not to be sniffed at.

TBH I think this has less to do with advertising revenue and more to do with the fact that they are no longer of interest to the tabloids who regularly lift threads from here and thus contribute to bringing more traffic to the site. Now that Coronavirus has taken over the reporting “my mil has decided to park her caravan outside my house” no longer makes for good tabloid fodder.

Added to which the fact that coronavirus has also taken over MN means that there are no longer lighthearted or even different threads to contribute to to keep people coming back. Many have in fact left over some of the coronavirus threads...

BG2015 · 08/04/2020 15:31

No way.

It will be goodbye MN

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 08/04/2020 15:32

The timing for this really couldn’t be worse. People are losing their jobs or on on zero income.

Remember how this panned out for Friends Reunited?

Saucery · 08/04/2020 15:32

VegetableMunge not suitable or user friendly to smaller businesses iirc. Looking at the TrustPilot link reminded me of discussions in groups about it before. I think if your operating procedures and customer service can’t extend to all sizes of business you promote yourselves to then you’re probably not someone I as the end user want to trust my details with.
The main thing is the necessary interface between MNHQ and Stripe. There will need to be one. This will link rl details to username, which is not advisable.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 08/04/2020 15:33

Ironically, at any other time, I probably would have paid for Premium because I really appreciate how MN has stood against lots of pressure from MRAs and TRAs over the years.
However, in the current climate where our own business income has fallen off a cliff and we have so much uncertainty about other sources of income, I don't think I can justify it.

BeijingBikini · 08/04/2020 15:34

Nah, this is probably the kick up the arse I need to stop spending so much time on here and do something useful!

BadLad · 08/04/2020 15:34

Remember how this panned out for Friends Reunited?

Didn't they just get killed because facebook did everything they did and a load more, and did it all much better?

alloutoffucks · 08/04/2020 15:34

I pay this for Netflix which is much better value.
There are lots of chat forums.

FunkyKingston · 08/04/2020 15:35

What about the women (and men) who are in abusive relationships and don't have access to money?

Donate a fiver a month to women's aid, it will be far more useful, the 'support' on here is questionable, anonymous, untrained strangers screaming 'just leave'
and then hounding the poster for updates every minute, without any of the understanding the practical and mental barriers associated with that course of action.

It's a bloody chat forum, not the 4th emergency service.

SarahInAccounts · 08/04/2020 15:35

Didn't they just get killed because facebook did everything they did and a load more, and did it all much better?

Also free.

alloutoffucks · 08/04/2020 15:35

@Saucery That is a good point, MN have a terrible history of data protection.

SoleBizzz · 08/04/2020 15:35

Is the owner a millionairess?

ginghamstarfish · 08/04/2020 15:36

No, as a PP said, the users provide much of the content (all the content I want to see at least, I tend to avoid other stuff as it is no doubt sponsored or advertising), so it's completely different from a subscription service like Netflix, Disney etc.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 08/04/2020 15:37

Oh hell no. I'll find another site to hang out on.

alloutoffucks · 08/04/2020 15:37

The thing about women in abusive relationships - I think at times MN has become unsafe for this group. I have seen so many posts where a woman is in a coercive relationship and is told that she is making a big deal out of nothing.

OpenWheelRace · 08/04/2020 15:38

I won't be - it doesn't hold that value for me.

Like lots of PP, I leave MN and then get sucked back in over and over.
I've been around these parts for almost a decade and its slowly but surely descended into quite a nasty pit of bile on several boards.

I saw someone ripped to shreds the other day in Relationships for no reason at all - you sort of expect it in AIBU, but Relationships is a board for those already vulnerable.

If Mumsnet Premium then sucks the remaining value out of the "free" version, I'm sure I'll find somewhere else online to waste my time.

Inforthelonghaul · 08/04/2020 15:38

Hmm I would do normally I guess but we’ve had a 60% pay cut so no not for the foreseeable Sad

Justanotherlurker · 08/04/2020 15:39

£5 a month! for a forum, this isn't 2001

It will create a 2 tiered system which will put another nail in the coffin, I notice how it is only getting rid of 'some' adverts as well, so paying a subscription whilst still getting data mined.

Another forum will rise from the ashes they always do

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/04/2020 15:40

I'm dubious - they use affiliate links to products/books mentioned in posts which must generate £££££ direct income (and that's probably increased massively since lockdown).

Ability to pay the subscription doesn't equate to loyalty.

I agree that it's overpriced for the 'service' given that the forum visitors generate most of the content. Maybe £12 a year would be okay.

Or why not turn the business model on its head and pay the most loyal Mumsnetters for helping to keep the website relevant and popular!

Bezalelle · 08/04/2020 15:40

I'll pay if they let LangCleg back.

😑

GetOffYourHighHorse · 08/04/2020 15:41

'No. It's just not good enough. I can use Reddit for free...I think as others have said, this is a massive mistake on their part.'

But they have a premium rate too?

It really isnt that unusual for sites to have a free membership and a paid for/upgrade subscription too.

Monstermissy36 · 08/04/2020 15:41

Well it didn't do much for the Bad Mother's Club did it....

Much missed that is!!
