I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

I wouldn’t for the reasons already mentioned

I would be paying for content I am providing
I would be paying to talk with batshit people
The moderation is often SHIT
It’s a black hole that sucks my time. I have deactivated lots and get time back, then I rejoin for something specific and hang around wasting months of my life. I’m a TWAT But not so much of a twat that I’d pay for it.
The security is shocking. Under a previous account I used to get emails from mnhq meant for other users and ended up deactivating because they could not deal with it.
I could get Netflix for that price, which is unarguably better value. I’ve got sisters, friends and colleagues I can talk shit to for free but none of them will put on a play for me.
350k is a horrifying wage bill which I am reluctant to prop up

FortunesFave · 08/04/2020 15:22

PleaseStop probably because they're mainly used by businesses and not by members of the public.

Stet · 08/04/2020 15:22

Yes, Stripe is a major payment processor. I've used it for my business previously and never had access to anyone's banking details.

Saucery · 08/04/2020 15:23

I know small businesses who have had Stripe. They tend not to have Stripe now.

Lol I completely agree

OhCaptain · 08/04/2020 15:24

Does anyone actually use the site outside of the chat forum?

Purpleclownsuit · 08/04/2020 15:24

After reading the other thread, 100% no. Justines replies to people asking questions are quite rude really. Flies and honey and all that.

FortunesFave · 08/04/2020 15:24

Well the stats on this thread indicate that a large majority won't be paying.

AdobeWanKenobi · 08/04/2020 15:24

So when all this covid stuff is done and the journalists return to their usual swamps, you want me to pay you £5 a month so that they can still lift anything I post along with an adblocker I get for free?

RedRedScab · 08/04/2020 15:25

No, I'll take it as my cue to leave.

Mumsnet is hardly vital is it?

FortunesFave · 08/04/2020 15:25

Captain not me...do you mean things like reading the blogs and stuff?

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 15:25

Does anyone actually use the site outside of the chat forum?

Until I saw the posts mentioning it I had actually forgotten it was anything other than forums.

inwood · 08/04/2020 15:25

No I wouldn't. I've got enough subscription services, ones that I don't provide content for!

I never ever look at the main website.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 15:26

The app I use is just chat I think

FortunesFave · 08/04/2020 15:26

RedScab no...I mean there are many forums out there that are completely free.

BadLad · 08/04/2020 15:26

No, I won't.

It's rather expensive - none of the other sites I read ask for any more than a fiver per year.

And they have much better sites than here, with editing, quote function, ignore lists etc.

It's the users of this site who deserve paying - the funny and interesting content is the good thing about mumsnet. I don't know what the staff do for the 350,000 spent on staff costs, but it certainly isn't improving the actual website, which is shite, frankly.

GinghamStyle · 08/04/2020 15:26

Someone posting on the original thread has made me realise that I’ve not been able to justify a subscription to Disneyplus and so shouldn’t really subscribe to Mumsnet as well/instead. These £5/£6.99/£7.99s a month soon add up.

SlipSlidin · 08/04/2020 15:26

Definitely not. They really haven’t thought this through. £5 a month to read the bitter ramblings of a load of bickering malcontents? Nah.

Nousernameforme · 08/04/2020 15:26

I won't be paying but I will turn my ad blocker off.

We are the product here as we are on facebook, twitter and all other free sites I don't think we should have to pay for the privilege.

It will be a shame if it folds because in normal times I do get a lot out of the site. However at the moment it's all Corona related hysterics so I am spending less time on here anyway.

VegetableMunge · 08/04/2020 15:28

Can you say more about that saucery?

UserDeleted · 08/04/2020 15:29

Big fat nope!

Promises of an edit function and other things is hilarious. They cant get their act together to fix broken parts of the site (that have been broken for a looong time) so you'll be waiting a long time to get your edit function. You'll be promised it, it'll be getting worked on as they speak, tech are on it, top of their list, but you'll wait. And wait.

Enjoy paying £5 for the same site you can get with an adblock. And you aren't getting NO ads, just less.

If this was properly designed and working NOW then maybe. But it's not so nope.

PotholeParadise · 08/04/2020 15:29

Nope, I am not doing any kind of subscription when MN has historically had security issues. One-off anonymous donation, I would have considered.

Ostanovka · 08/04/2020 15:29

I prob would have if it was cheaper. Maybe like sending a text to pay £2 for a year or something. I do value MN but don't subscribe to anything as I can't afford it.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 08/04/2020 15:29

I'm torn. Been here a long time under various guises and really enjoy the site, but I'm not on here as much as I used to be and I would struggle to justify £5/mth, especially when I had to argue and wheedle with DH that Disneyplus, which has been great at keeping our quarantined teens entertained, was worth that much to the family!
Add to that being a business owner who is also being hard hit and will also have to take a pay holiday...
I'd love to support the site, and would miss it, but I feel it is quite a lot of money
