I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

Or Ju$tine1

MrsJoshNavidi · 09/04/2020 14:12

I only use MN on my iphone and I don't see any ads anyway.

menthollyinsane · 09/04/2020 14:15

I only use the Mumsnet app on my phone or iPad and don't get any ads. I can't cope with the main site

Well I just wandered over to piston heads and had a read of one of their Corona virus threads. Was good. A bit less "you went in your garden for twelve minutes, you want all old people to die!" type hyperbole, which was nice.

I might start looking for other forums.

I wonder if PH let you call a man a man, even when he wears a dress?

HoffiCoffi13 · 09/04/2020 14:23

I was getting a bit confused with all the ad talk... I only use MN on my phone and don’t see any ads at all. Another reason not to pay.

@PikaK - "I've signed up without thinking"....

Ok then. So you think now is a good time to pay for things that should have been standard for ages, for example the edit post function?
I'm not having a go but I think a lot of people signed up 'without thinking'.

You'll still see the site, with fewer adverts on it, not no adverts. The site will still be available to people to post on with or without paying.
I'm curious, why did Justine/Mumsnet decide to buy out some founding shareholders?
Why aren't they going to Dragon's Den looking for the investment from actual investors instead of asking their product (i.e. you and me) to bail them out?
Why aren't they completely downsizing the site on a temporary basis to just Forums or just the content on the other areas of the site and then when things get good again, start expanding?

drunkyhumptydumpty · 09/04/2020 14:38

Nobody seems to acknowledge that the site breaks down frequently.

How would people react if Netflix crashed as often as MN?

AdobeWanKenobi · 09/04/2020 14:43

It's not MN thats been the lifesaver though, it's the MN posters.

Eggcited · 09/04/2020 14:49

It's not MN thats been the lifesaver though, it's the MN posters.

I think this is an important distinction. I appreciate those who set up the site, but they're not the people who help other users or give advice. They don't keep new parents company during the never ending night shift, attend weddings, and in some cases give posters the push to check things out, which has actually saved lives.

canigooutyet · 09/04/2020 14:50

Lots of people have mentioned the breakdown issues @drunkyhumptydumpty unless you mean the blaze attitude from hq.

Their traffic has clearly increased a lot recently, or they are having tech issues again. It’s so bloody slow at the moment.
Although I suppose it’s better than the slow load, the site reloads itself just when you’re about to post.

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 09/04/2020 14:52

There's no Edit button and there's no Ignore Poster button. And unlike the IMDB chat forms there is no option for a nested layout, which works wonders for the ability to bypass the catfights between two or three posters which have so often derailed good discussions. These would do more than any heavy handed banning policy to control bad online behaviour and trolling, and wouldn't be that difficult to set up. They have been repeatedly suggested, and suggestions have been ignored.

I'll say it again. The site looks like it was designed by a bunch of Year 9 schoolgirls. Am I going to pay for some extra bells and whistles on such a Heath Robinson effort? Hell no.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 09/04/2020 14:55

I know there was a data breach a while ago but what was the Emma debacle? I don't understand how that has passed me by.

Lefkosia · 09/04/2020 15:15

An intern who was pro trans rights leaked a load of mners personal data in retaliation for the FWR being perceived to be anti trans. I don't believe MN have said what they did about it.

canigooutyet · 09/04/2020 15:15

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/media/2018/apr/19/mumsnet-reports-itself-data-regulator-transgender-rights-row-ip-addresses-posted-twitter

There’s also loads of threads about it asking questions that were never answered iirc.

Basically an intern had complaints about certain issues and decided to take screen shots of information she should not have had access to. She was only there 6 months, and not a vital part of the company.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/04/2020 15:19

I don’t remember an Emma debacle either?

I remember Jeffrey the hacker and also the TRA intern. Both of which were massive personal data breaches.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/04/2020 15:20

Oh was the intern called Emma?

PleaseStopCrying · 09/04/2020 15:25

It's not MN thats been the lifesaver though, it's the MN posters.

This is such an important point that its worth highlighting a third time.

The posters are what makes the site what it is. No one comes here for the website and I don't think its unreasonable to state that.

The fact is its the advice, sense of belonging, human interaction and knowledgeable posters who make the site. To think it couldn't be replicate elsewhere is foolhardy.

canigooutyet · 09/04/2020 15:25

Yea Emma was the intern.
If iirc mnhq had already been informed openly that they were getting targeted. It might have been bs, but should have been a reminder about their lack of security and how anyone who walked off the street could access everything.

I think it’s also dubious that search isn’t working. Bit of a coincidence really. Wonder how many who are posting positive things about value for money 🤣 are new or barely used accounts.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 09/04/2020 15:29

@canigooutyet Yea.

The same tech people who can't keep a basic forum functioning are now going to add more features and have to do it to a paid for standard. Really?

canigooutyet · 09/04/2020 15:30

Exactly there’s nothing to stop anyone creating a forum for free that Includes all the premium extras.
There’s loads of forums out there that really do highlight how badly run this place is. Just google your interests. There will even be sites dedicated to that super secret hobby that is so top secret it would be outing 🤣

cologne4711 · 09/04/2020 15:31

I think MN has a value and £5 a month probably isn't that much.

However, I am not keen on subsiding rich people, even if they've worked hard for what they've earned.

For the same reason I'm not keen on the likes of Centrica furloughing thousands of employees, feathering their shareholders' nests at the taxpayers' expense. Personally I think larger companies should have to pay it back.

I did donate to an organisation I've already paid a subscription for yesterday but it's not for profit, I get a lot of value from it and it was the coffee thing where you just donate £3. I am not sure I want to donate to a for-profit organisation and prop up someone in an expensive London house.

PleaseStopCrying · 09/04/2020 15:33

GrinGrin I genuinely just laughed so much I nearly woke the baby who took 2 hours to get to nap. Not cool Grin

canigooutyet · 09/04/2020 15:34

And all the vagueness about what they can access through Stripe, I don’t really want to think about what the Adblock they are using retains and shares.

As I have previously mentioned I run a site and a forum. I have a post stating what companies I use and what data I can see. I let them know what mods can see (not a lot).
