I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

OP posts:
araiwa · 09/04/2020 11:55

No

My definition of premium varies wildly from what mnhq thinks it means

£5 a month for a limited edit button? Bloody hell

MrsJoshNavidi · 09/04/2020 11:55

Also no. Sorry Justine.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/04/2020 11:59

This has given me a kick up the arse to download a decent adblocker. It’s wonderful and free. I used to,click on the odd ad which I guess helped MN, now I won’t be doing. If the adverts weren’t increasingly intrusive I’d have put up with them. Some moving ad yesterday was making me feel nauseous.

squeekums · 09/04/2020 12:02

Nope, i wouldnt pay
The exchange rate is crap, would be almost $10 a month in AUD

TigerQueenie · 09/04/2020 12:10

I had a read through the post in site stuff.

The thing which jumped out to me the most was how much the official line changed on various topics. From saying it wouldn't appear as mumsnet on a bank statement, and mumsnet would have no access to the data held by stripe to admitting it shows as mumsnet and not only do they have access to the data, but they've already selected which employees should have access and provided training.

I don't like being lied to or mislead, and I'm now absolutely certain there'll be a lot more lies or twists put on things.

It's also a piss take that when the times were good, the decision wasn't taken to invest in site development and security.

m0therofdragons · 09/04/2020 12:13

No it's a guilty pleasure/ obsession so that'll just give me an excuse to delete the app.

UYScuti · 09/04/2020 12:17

The phrase 'keeping the lights on' speaks to basic necessities, it implies 'we want to save this community for the good of the people who participate in it'

That's not what's happening is it... more like keep us in caviar and champagne, keep us in the manner to which we have become accustomed.
We the royal overlords need our fat salaries so you the peasants who make up this community shall pay

FoldenHoard · 09/04/2020 12:23

No, I won't be paying. I post less and less these days anyway, and I don't think the site is worth £4.99 a month. I'd have probably paid it for it years ago though when I first joined.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 09/04/2020 12:46

I'm not paying.
Fewer ads and an edit button that gives you 15 seconds after posting to review it and then go back into edit it?
A site that has had major security issues in the past?
A site that allows (some might even go so far as to say welcomes) tabloid 'reporters' lift their posts and publish them as 'news'?
The price point at a time when everyone is being made to cut their cloth to suit?
The haphazard approach to moderating threads and deleting threads/content that could so easily have been locked as there is valuable and useful information in the thread but for strange reasons gets deleted?
User interface that is clunky at best and very dated.

Nope. Not subscribing.

PicaK · 09/04/2020 12:50

I've signed up without thinking. Mumsnet has been a lifesaver for me on various occasions. I'm bloody grateful it exists.

whoweare · 09/04/2020 13:06

I would be happy to pay, however it amounts to nearly $100 AUD which is well outside of my budget. I just could not justify that at the moment.

TheFaerieQueene · 09/04/2020 13:11

I won’t pay as I’m not convinced my details would be secure. I also believe we will see Mumsnet sold within the next year. This new revenue stream will make the company more valuable. 😉

canigooutyet · 09/04/2020 13:15

@PicaK aren’t you slightly concerned about their misleading approach to data, including denying who sees what Until posters started saying no, you can see x,y and z. They’ve had issues with Emma the intern and hacked before. Emails and other info leaked online.

UYScuti · 09/04/2020 13:15

Is it going to be hoovered up by Google or Mark Zuckerberg or maybe Jeff bezos?

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 13:18

I hope the 200 have done the subscription rather than lump sum. At least it can be cancelled.

canigooutyet · 09/04/2020 13:20

And of course they won’t take PayPal. It will cost them too much and it gives buyer protection.
There will be a lot of subscribers who will be pissed off about their amazing deal when they are still getting a load of ads and could get rid of all for free.

Saladaysior · 09/04/2020 13:23

A few people have said MN has been a lifesaver to them but I wonder how many extremely vulnerable women would say the opposite, particularly wrt to the data breaches which for all we know had serious implications for women and children escaping abusive situations.

Also suspect that this is part of a strategy moving towards selling the business. I suspect the founders know it’s had its best days in its current format and are positioning themselves as best they can to protect their own interests. Dressing it up as something for the users’ benefit is disingenuous.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 09/04/2020 13:26

Nope..not gonna pay.

The addictiveness and high traffic of mumsnet is because we feel it is free. Facebook is the same. I reckon as social media gets bigger & more profit seeking people will find almost any form of activity to generate profit invasive - I already don't go on Facebook much any more as the ads etc get in my way.

Oxyiz · 09/04/2020 13:27

Gosh. Must be nice to be able to sign up to subscription services without even thinking. Still a bit daft though given the data issues.

Eggcited · 09/04/2020 13:41

what is in place to keep premium members bank and security details safe?

Still no concrete response to this. Apparently just a few members of staff will be able to access the information names, addresses, email addresses, and the IP address of the device used to pay

After the Emma debacle i'm surprised so many posters have happily given away their personal information, with no evidence that their information will be kept safe.

AccioCake · 09/04/2020 13:42

Hell no. Like others I wouldn't trust MN with my bank details. I also think the current benefits they're offering are not worth £4.99/£49.99. I was testing a Beta version of their app which allowed you to refine a thread by OP or a particular user. The app expired yesterday and then I read about the new charge, so I presume they've stopped it so they can now charge for this feature in the future. It's a shame as it was really useful but I absolutely wouldn't pay for it. It's not comparable to paying for The Guardian. WE are the content on here.

Saladaysior · 09/04/2020 13:47

Exactly Accio. Someone even compared it to Disney plus - I mean come on, the information and entertainment on MN is generated entirely by its users. I really wonder about the 200 who’ve allegedly signed up ... are they completely naive? Or just still in thrall to the founders, like first form schoolgirls looking up to the Head girl?
Or maybe they have very little experience of other forums and just can’t compare with what’s already available free of charge.

PumpkinPieAlibi · 09/04/2020 13:48

No.

  1. I like the chat here but I can get that elsewhere.
  2. This place can suck your time, so maybe this forces me to break the habit.
  3. Why offer basic functions that should have always been on the site NOW?
PumpkinPieAlibi · 09/04/2020 13:49

Oh and it's too expensive also.

Guess I could have added that bit to my first post but no 'Edit' button so...

BadLad · 09/04/2020 14:04

what is in place to keep premium members bank and security details safe?

Justine stores them in a folder called "Personal letters,", so nobody would think to look for them there. And the password is "passw0rd" (with a zero) for extra security.
