I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

raviolidreaming Posted on the other thread

I deal with payments made by Stripe for a small organisation - I can see names, addresses, email addresses, and the IP address of the device used to pay. Someone at MN will have access to that info from payments

JustineMumsnet Then replied

Yes you are right - we have to have access to that same data in Stripe so we can cancel subscriptions etc.

So a site that has had numerous data breeches will now have access to your names, addresses, email addresses, and the IP address of the device used to pay.

What could possibly go wrong. Confused

Tumbleweed101 · 09/04/2020 06:55

No, not something I can afford right now and I’ll just find a forum to chat on/read that is free. I’ve quite willingly paid contributions to my favourite forums but that has been what I can afford and when.

Scruffyoak · 09/04/2020 07:14

I think there will be serious data breaches going to happen.

Every other free forum has an edit option.

hiredandsqueak · 09/04/2020 07:30

No I won't be paying, a few years ago I'd have been happy to throw a few quid in the pot but Mumsnet isn't the place it was then. I could have, and did spend hours on the site then whereas now at times there is little to keep me reading.I definitely wouldn't be handing over my bank details to a site where security seems lax in any case.

Carbosug · 09/04/2020 07:30

Yes, I don't get why the edit function is being touted as some kind of premium feature. It's a basic part of most forums.

PureedSocksAndPants · 09/04/2020 07:59

Will those signing up for this now continue to pay up long term? A data breech or simply not feeling it’s value for money could see subscribers losing interest after the initial flurry to ‘save’ MN.

I get the feeling though that MN have wanted to do this for a while anyway though. The situation now is just a useful reason.

PleaseStopCrying · 09/04/2020 08:04

Justine admitted on the sit stuff thread that they were planning on releasing premium later this year anyway. However due to the fall in advertising they decided to bring that release forward without working out a full 'product' or ironing any of the kinks out.

I'm sceptical that the issues raised will be resolved anytime soon as they now have people literally throwing money at them for no reason. There is no incentive to make changes quickly now they have the money.

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 08:07

I got the sense that the big issue was a loan they had already.

So subscribe to pay our loan really. I can’t see what the extra items offered bring the user.

Saying donate might have been better but it’s a bit late now people have signed up already.

Startoftheyear2020 · 09/04/2020 08:09

Mumsnet has basically saved me and I'm happy to contribute. Hope others do and the website survives. So many businesses will go under thanks to Covid-19 and we need to keep MN going.

MarieQueenofScots · 09/04/2020 08:13

As a business model it’s absolutely awful. If you’re requesting people pay for a “premium” service that service needs to be (a) ready and (b) transparent. Not “well give us your money and we’ll try and roll out something a bit different for you when we can”

KundaliniRising · 09/04/2020 08:20

No and I have been here about 18 years and back in the day I paid for the fee so I could pay to contact a poster. But back then MN felt like more of a start up venture and women empowering women. Now it is a corporate establishment business with shocking disregard for safety and privacy.

Tw1nset i am with you on this issue, i have been a member since my dd was 4 months old, she is nearly 18 now. There has been a very marked difference in the general feel of the place (supportive to corporate) and yes the disregard for the safety and privacy of members has at times been shocking.

TigerQueenie · 09/04/2020 08:20

Is Justine taking a payment holiday from other paid roles too? Or just this one?

I think it's in poor taste for someone with a net worth of around a million pounds to have their begging bowl out. Before someone points it out, I know that doesn't mean cash in the bank, but the principle remains.

Stinkycatbreath · 09/04/2020 08:31

I love mumsnet but not that much. They make enough money have you seen their companies house report

KundaliniRising · 09/04/2020 08:45

I vaguely remember a pay to private message back in the mists of time. Gosh i had totally forgotten that!

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 09/04/2020 08:48

I feel like this will backfire and many mumsnet users will leave. Like other posters said it’s ill-timed.

AnnofPeeves · 09/04/2020 08:49

I won't be paying. I don't see how you could have a two tier strategy. How could there be equality of moderation for a start? Two people post equally offensive things; one pays to do so, the other doesn't. Whose post will be removed? MN won't want to piss off their paying customer.

Other issues which make me not want to hand over money include the massive data breach and the moderation on this site which is inconsistent. Finally, and most importantly, the content I want is provided by fellow Munsnetters, not by MN itself. This forum could be replicated elsewhere. I use another busy forum - you can easily quote other users, edit posts, formatting is simple, you can like posts and see at a glance how many posts a user has written. It's all free.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 09/04/2020 08:50

A million people signed up for universal credit and many people are on reduced wages. Most people will be cutting back in what they spend Mumsnet isn’t an essential.

Saladaysior · 09/04/2020 08:56

@KundalinRising:

‘There has been a very marked difference in the general feel of the place (supportive to corporate) and yes the disregard for the safety and privacy of members has at times been shocking.’

Agree. Back in the day the amateurish feel somehow seemed more acceptable because it genuinely felt like a supportive venture started from the kitchen table (albeit by a group of very privileged mummies with time on their hands)

Over the years it’s evolved into a massive corporate entity but it’s approach to data protection, accountability and management of the forum has not improved in parallel with this.

It smacks to me of wanting to have your cake and eat it... all the benefits of being big corporation with a huge financial turnover and some pretty hefty profits stacked up over the years, while also playing the ‘look we’re just an ordinary group of women and we need a helping hand here.’

What shocked me most about the data breaches was not just that they happened (though that was bad enough) but the MN response. I remember the early messages put out about it- MNHQ lightly joking about it as if they’d made a schoolgirl slip up. And over the years they’d suckered some posters into falling for this- I remember the early responses from a few posters, along the lines of ‘oh don’t worry MNHQ, you’re doing your best, here, have some Wine Cake
Of course the majority of posters then told it like it was: that this was a serious data breach, which potentially left users extremely vulnerable.

There’s been annoyances over other things over the years - the huge inconsistencies in moderation, the way certain public figures are fair game for abuse while threads on others get pulled the moment anyone posts anything that’s true but negative. But it’s the data breaches and the totally complacent response which did it for me.

No way would I feel safe paying subscriptions in the light of this, and aside from that I honestly don’t feel there’s enough to make me want to pay anyway even if it felt secure. The content, whether useful information or entertainment is pretty much 100% supplied by the users, it’s not comparable with other platforms which inform or entertain

Will be interesting to see how this plays out but I feel it’s a bad move.

Slychomping · 09/04/2020 09:04

Is there another way of paying that doesn't involved giving bank details (PayPal?). If so I would be happy to contribute. I've been on here 16 yrs and as an expat Mumsnet has kept me in touch with uk and its been a bit of a life line really. I am not happy about the poor on-line security though!

PleaseStopCrying · 09/04/2020 09:10

Is there another way of paying that doesn't involved giving bank details (PayPal?).

People asked Justine this and it was a flat no. The only way you can pay is to use your bank details and therefore have them linked to your username.

ColourMyDreams · 09/04/2020 09:13

No. I wouldn't pay.
I'm a member of a forum that has twice as many members as MN and has been going longer. It also has an edit button, a block member button, basically all the bells and whistles.....for free.
And you can call posters a cunt without a ban.
So why should I pay a fiver of my hard earned cash to find someone else's luxury lifestyle, particularly when we give the contents for free?
Let's face it, no posters = no content = no MN.
So they either want to stay in business or they don't.
The security is lax to say the least and they want us to trust them with bank details?
It's a big fat no from me.

c3pu · 09/04/2020 09:20

What does MN premium offer for £5 a month that makes it more worthwhile than than an adblocker I use for free?

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 09:26

I don’t even want all the bells and whistles I’d leave if they were added for free. It’s a pretty flawed offer.

Changemyname18 · 09/04/2020 09:27

Quite how they think people right now want to pay out £5 a month for full use of an internet forum when so many are facing financial strain and are wondering how they are going to pay essential bills is beyond me. They seem all wrapped up in their metropolitan social media bubble. Sorry Mumsnet, not even going to look at you for free now. What a wonderful incentive you have given me to kick a social media habit. This lockdown has taught me to spend time doing other more creative and fulfilling things and I've been looking at the forums less anyway. If this is your attitude towards users, I'm off.
