I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

What does MN premium offer for £5 a month that makes it more worthwhile than than an adblocker I use for free?

From what I can see the ad blocker is more useful as it blocks all ads. Whereas the premium service is apparently going to have fewer ads. Hmm

Thymelord · 09/04/2020 09:31

ColourMyDreams Can I ask which other forum you mention in your post? I won't be paying and could use somewhere else to waste time!

LaurieMarlow · 09/04/2020 09:34

I'm not sure it's the best business decision of all time.

The product doesn't appear to be worth paying for. The features talked about are standard elsewhere.

It's launching at a time when people have less discretionary income to spend.

Having said that, there'll be people willing to sign up, so I guess that's worth something in the short term.

I'm more interested in how they manage a two tiered experience in the future. It sounds really messy and has the potential to undermine the experience all round.

LaurieMarlow · 09/04/2020 09:38

What a wonderful incentive you have given me to kick a social media habit.

This is the danger for them. I'd be kinda delighted if they gave me a good enough incentive to kick it.

PleaseStopCrying · 09/04/2020 09:40

Having said that, there'll be people willing to sign up, so I guess that's worth something in the short term.

Last night Justine said that 200 odd had signed up. If we say that each of those 200 odd paid for the year then Mumsnet's piggybank is looking over 10,000 pounds better off this morning. Not bad for a few hours work and given that each of those people have basically paid for a promise of a product.

Those who paid are still using exactly the same site with exactly the same features as they were before paying with no knowledge of when these proposed nee features will be launched. It must be lovely to have money to just throw around at literally nothing. Hmm

PureedSocksAndPants · 09/04/2020 09:42

Saladaysior Agree with all you said. Very well put.

Saucery · 09/04/2020 09:48

Tbf to the subscribers I think a lot of them are seeing it as a donation during lean times to keep a valued website running. They’ve totally fallen for the homely Kitchen Table shoestring operation guff.

Carbosug · 09/04/2020 09:48

I suspect this could be the beginning of the end for mumsnet. It's already a vastly different site from the one I joined ten years ago. I left for a couple of years and returned about two years ago. It was like going back to your old school or somewhere you used to enjoy working. The structure is the same, there's a few familiar faces knocking around, but most of the people who made it special are long gone.
I'm only really posting on here at the moment because of the particular circumstances we're in, but don't feel it would leave a massive gap in my life if I left.

Mayorquimby2 · 09/04/2020 09:50

That price point is fucking laughable 😂😂

putyourgamefaceon · 09/04/2020 10:03

If anything it's made me realise I do not need this so I'm off to delete my account... it's sucked far to much of my time, least it gave me the kick up the arse!

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 10:04

I hope people can get their £50 if it doesn’t work out

NoSauce · 09/04/2020 10:04

I’m still finding it hard to believe Justine actually had the cheek to post her thread yesterday given how bad this forum actually is and has been for a long, long time.
But more so given the dire straits so many of MNs members find themselves in atm.

Just unbelievable, I think it will actually have the opposite effect and will push people away.

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 10:07

Yep what a sub. Wonder how much the loan is

PleaseStopCrying · 09/04/2020 10:10

They’ve totally fallen for the homely Kitchen Table shoestring operation guff.

I think this is pretty accurate. I also think some have paid in the belief they will lose the ads and a few have paid because they think they wont be able to use the site if they don't. I honestly cannot believe anyone parted with money without first knowing all the facts. Especially about who would be able to see their bank details.

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 10:12

I’m really surprised people leapt at it so quickly too, reminds me of people handing over money on IG.

SlipSlidin · 09/04/2020 10:15

£10,000 isn’t going to go very far and judging by the tone of this thread and the one in Site Stuff that’s about as much as they’re going to get.

The arrogance of Justine is breathtaking, she’s been very disingenuous about the accounts and data breaches too.

Other sites are so much more well constructed. With decent edit and search functions, post counts and visible biographies of members (which can be as discreet or open as you choose) and with vastly superior moderation.

They have squandered years of opportunity to invest in the site and now they’re expecting their own content providers to bail them out.

Sounds like Bye Felicia

Saucery · 09/04/2020 10:19

I thought some sports/leisure businessman had bought into MN? Or is that who they’ve had to buy out?

Seeitsortit · 09/04/2020 10:23

It’s the wages bill that gets me -
Some people at MNHQ must be laughing their asses off at the ‘who’s on less than £20k’ threads

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 10:29

I’ve never really felt like anything but fodder for money which is fine as I said it’s an exchange. But now sticking the hands out on top of that, nope. Perhaps if there had been more goodwill.

Alsohuman · 09/04/2020 10:29

The wages bill is outrageous. How many people do they employ ffs? And what on earth are they paying them?

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 10:29

100 apparently.

It’s crazy
The only thing that has changed since I joined is the number of users

PleaseStopCrying · 09/04/2020 10:33

The wages bill is outrageous. How many people do they employ ffs? And what on earth are they paying them?

Apparently they employ approximately 100 staff who earn an average of 35k a year. Goodness knows what some of them are employed to do. The coding of the site is outdated and the format of the forum and website hasn't changed in years.

AlternativePerspective · 09/04/2020 10:40

In order to cover the annual wage bill alone they will need 70000 people to subscribe. And bear in mind that some may subscribe for a month and then drop off etc.

And all they have now is 200. Come on it’s laughable.

Esp given Justine said that if users feel they’re likely to be banned then they should only sign up on a month by month basis. Unless of course that is a way to ensure the site gets more money.

Seeitsortit · 09/04/2020 10:44

According to Justines message at 14:22 yesterday the bill was £350k per month, for 100 staff. I get that there are employment costs but really?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/04/2020 10:47

So a site that has had numerous data breeches will now have access to your names, addresses, email addresses, and the IP address of the device used to pay

TBF Justine did say that only a very few staff would have access, only under the strictest of conditions and that they'd already been thoroughly trained ... like Emma perhaps?

As a PP said, it's almost unbelieveable that folk are prepared to part with money without knowing all the facts, especially when security questions have been raised again and again but not replied to
