I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

I've subscribed.

MN has been a great source of information, support and batshit craziness for me for a very long time.

(and if it means those feckin ads go away I'm happy)

RunningNinja79 · 08/04/2020 21:35

Erm nope. Not a chance in hell.

I dont want to pay for a load of people to come and get wound up by people arguing and refusing to look at another perspective.

Also as mentioned on this thread (which I didn't think about) was that it will create a heirarchy. MN royalty at its finest.

I really shouldn't be on here. Been on here for years (at least 10) on and off. I dont really miss it when Im not on it, just been on it a lot more recently now I have more free time. If I couldn't use it the oh well, it will be no great loss to me.

Carbosug · 08/04/2020 21:36

Oh and I agree the moderation here is pretty bad. There seems to be little initiative and just a rigid checklist as to what breaks the rules and what doesn't. Some really nasty and abusive posts are allowed stand because technically they aren't in breach of guidelines, while innocuous posts are removed.

RunningNinja79 · 08/04/2020 21:36

sorry If I couldn't use it then oh well,

Almahart · 08/04/2020 21:39

I have really mixed feelings here. On one hand there really are no other spaces for women on the internet and it has helped me massively at various points in my life.

On the other hand, it has for years being making money from content that is generated by us. And I haven't liked recent lists of crap to buy with links to Amazon. So it has felt massively commercial and I feel that if it lives by the sword then fair enough if it dies by the sword.

On balance, I'd chuck a tenner at it for a one off donation but wouldn't be prepared to pay £50 a year

BigChocFrenzy · 08/04/2020 21:39

YANBU

I signed up for a year and regard it as a donation, to keep MN going
It's worth it to me

I don't notice the ads and don't really care about special features

endofthelinefinally · 08/04/2020 21:40

It has been mentioned on the other thread that it is worth paying because MN hosts web chats with politicians and other high profile people who would not engage on other forums.
However, in recent times, questions on web chats have been heavily edited, often without even a deletion message or any evidence of the deletion. Longstanding and respected posters are told they are not allowed to post questions or they are deleted.
I have already said that I am grateful for the support I have received in recent years, but I have contributed a lot too.
MN has published books based entirely on the advice and information provided by users. They own the copyright on everything users contribute.
Many, many users are experts in their various fields, highly intelligent, educated, compassionate, generous. I am sure many of those contributors would be paid for their time and knowledge in any other setting.
Lazy journalists constantly lift and publish material written by users. It has been suggested that MN consider charging for use of this material. I personally think that would be a better course of action than charging users.
I just think this is an ill judged, ill timed development.

TheSmelliestHouse · 08/04/2020 21:42

Nope

wheresmymojo · 08/04/2020 21:46

I can't because we are both unemployed due to the virus. If that weren't the case then I would at least for this year to support the forum since it's added so much value to me over the years.

daisydukes7576 · 08/04/2020 21:46

No way would I pay, I think it's very rude of MN to ask for it.

No other social media platform
Is asking people to pay, I think they should have money set aside for such eventualities.

They've been hit hard like so many other businesses and I don't value the site enough to do it, I can take it or leave it tbh.

agonyauntie2020 · 08/04/2020 21:46

I paid.I explained why on the threat started by MNHQ asking us to pay for the premium service if we could. I'd also be happy to also pay for someone who couldn't, randomly selected by MN if they introduced that.

For me, mumsnet has and continues to offer me help, advice, many, many laughs (penis beaker, Center parc bum fun, cutted up pears, cakebitch) and it's (easily) worth the same as a premium coffee a month.

I'm a bit confused by people criticising their business model, wage bill, going on about previous years' profits (sometimes without understanding the tax etc). (Ask me where my 'previous year's profits' are, aka my salary, spent that's where. Wasn't expecting CV and nor was anyone. I trust them when they say their advertising is way, way down (it's not just them, it's print/online media too), and they need a bit of help. I feel uncomfortable with the judgey posts about how they run their business - like backseat driving - they're not asking for a huge amount and fgs they've given us so so so many laughs!

I hear the people concerned about anonymity and 100% support anyone who prefers not to join right now until they come up with a way to separate usernames and bank details - as an optimist I feel sure this can be worked out.

daisydukes7576 · 08/04/2020 21:48

Might have done a few years ago. But the site has lost its sparkle. Too many posters taking offence at everything and anything, stifling debate and being 'pc gone mad'.

Also agree with this completely! It's just not worth it.

And how much does it cost to run a website really?!! I find it bizarre cash flow isn't enough to cover a few months it's not like it's a service business. It's very bizarre IMO and think MN need to consider cutting costs elsewhere

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 08/04/2020 21:50

No.

I'm a feminist and cannot speak the truth about certain issues without getting a warning.

SoapIsYourFriend · 08/04/2020 22:00

On balance, I'd chuck a tenner at it for a one off donation but wouldn't be prepared to pay £50 a year

This actually, I'd be prepared to do this.

1FootInTheRave · 08/04/2020 22:03

Yes to lost it's sparkle!

Exactly how I feel.

Debate is stifled and far too many take offence at anything and everything.

EmpressJewel · 08/04/2020 22:04

I won't be paying.

I only use the forum via the app and the ads don't bother me as I have learned to not pay any attention to them.

I enjoy the forum, it not enough to pay for it. I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to 'get' for my money.

Daffodil101 · 08/04/2020 22:05

Like I said, more stupid people these days

RuffleCrow · 08/04/2020 22:07

What @Pipandmum said.

Frankenheimer · 08/04/2020 22:08

Fraid not.

This might hopefully be the push I need to stop wasting so much time on Mumsnet.

Plus I'm one of the people who's had repeated emails inviting me to check out how AIBU votes are going. Emails which I very specifically did not sign up for and do not want. I'm pretty sure that's a breach of GDPR and therefore illegal. Happened yet again just a few days ago. To be honest, it has really tarnished Mumsnet in my eyes: no reputable company fucks up like this, repeatedly, with multiple users, without apology and without fixing the issue even after months have gone by. It's beyond shoddy. No way would I give bank details to an organisation with such a yawning gap in their tech skills department.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 08/04/2020 22:11

I'd still like to find out how the tech people who can't even run the app on the most basic of functions will manage to produce a paid for service that will have to be maintained to a workable minimum.

How many of us going the app absolutely unworkable for weeks on end? They still haven't worked out the bugs!

How many here will be happy to pay that much for something that doesn't work?!?! Will they refund £X if it's down for Y?

They still haven't solved the search function yet have managed to plough time and money into creating shiny new shit.

Why not spend your apparently limited resources on fixing the problems already here instead of creating brand new ones?!

PureedSocksAndPants · 08/04/2020 22:25

It will split the site in two. They say now the only difference is an edit button and no ads. But people will want more than that for the money and will feel justified in expecting it.

And I don’t understand the big deal about an edit facility. Why couldn’t we have had it anyway ages ago?

lastburritos · 08/04/2020 22:30

I've been here about 10 years. If you'd asked me about 5 years ago to donate I would have said yes. No question. But, as others have said, it's lost it's way.
The original Viper comaraderie is gone, too many stories being pulled by the Fail, too many trolls, too much taking offense for the sake of it, not much faith in Mumsnet to keep our details secure.
It makes me sad. I've got a lot from here in the past and some posters on here have no idea how their words made me change my life for the better. But I've been thinking to quit for a while for the reasons above and create a paying system would be the push for me.

Everyexitisanentrance · 08/04/2020 22:38

No it is not worth the premium. It is not as good as it used to be - yes there are some really funny posts but a lot of stuff is now repetitive, too many trolls and certainly, feminism chat is now stifled through over-moderation.

Even some of the advertising has gone downhill with some pictures that could be the start of a soft porn shoot eg DHgate.com

AdelaideK · 08/04/2020 23:02

No way. I don't trust their security and they are spending a fortune on staff wages. I was amazed when I saw they paid £350k a month.

ChocolateDove · 08/04/2020 23:03

In all honesty the edit button really shouldn't be that much of a challenge to a competent coder. The fact mumsnet has had more than one data breach just shows they don't have competent coders. It will never happen. Why should anyone pay for that? It's like paying to be robbed.
