I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

I think it's very expensive. £50 for what exactly. At first I thought it was if you didn't pay you couldn't use MN at all. Without people contributing there wouldn't be MN. And isn't a lot of the moderating done by volunteers.,

peachgreen · 08/04/2020 21:03

I find it interesting that there are so many FWR posters on here insisting they won't pay because MN is too heavy-handed when moderating trans discussions. I feel the exact opposite - I won't pay while MN continues to host and enable transphobia (veiled and otherwise). Which I guess shows that by trying to sit on the fence they're winning nobody. I wonder if financial difficulties will finally force them to "pick a side".

LochJessMonster · 08/04/2020 21:05

So they are asking you to sign up to a premium service that isn’t even available yet? The only thing they’ve guarantee is less adverts.
‘Over the next little while we’ll look to add some extra features’ Either add them now or don’t charge people for them yet!

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 08/04/2020 21:06

You know how about 6 months ago nethuns invaded and there was a spate of hun hubby and xxx in ops perhaps we will pay them a visit in return

JaniceBattersby · 08/04/2020 21:06

I will probably subscribe. I work for a local newspaper. Our advertising revenue Has dropped off a cliff and it’s likely our whole company will go to the wall if this lasts until the summer, taking many local newspapers with it. I can well understand how Mumsnet could find itself in the same predicament. I think, given what this forum has done for FWR and women in violent or abusive relationships over the years, it’s absolutely worth the price of a coffee every month. So many people who can’t afford to pay would be lost without it.

UYScuti · 08/04/2020 21:07

They seem to be a bunch of privileged yummy mummies who got lucky with finding a formula which captured the zeitgeist and made them a ton of dosh. Things aren’t quite so rosy now and they want us to jump to their tune and start paying
I agree, MN is fun but it's way too much of an attention suck and I'd be quite pleased to have a little £5 barrier to stop me dropping in and shooting the breeze when I could be using my time more productively!

SarahAndQuack · 08/04/2020 21:08

I just wish MN would shut the fuck up about trans debates, TBH.

I miss MN when it was not dominated by fuckwittery. I am happy with heavyweight academic feminism and popular activism, but lord, I cannot read one more dull-as-fuck thread where within three posts it's turned into a war about trans issues. Again.

WatchoutfortheROUS · 08/04/2020 21:09

I feel for all businesses that are struggling, but I wouldn't be able to take on another direct debit at the moment due to uncertainty about the future

ritzbiscuits · 08/04/2020 21:10

Feels very ill thought out. They're not putting Mumsnet behind a paywall like Disney +/Netflix, but attempting to charge for a few minor features that people have been asking for for years! They've always held out on making these changes, then all of a sudden what to charge for them. Tut tut!

They would have done better going down a Guardian supporter type approach. The site isn't going to go, as ultimately they need the mass numbers to drive the advertising revenue that is there for the taking.

They ultimately need to carry on going and cut their cloth. Keep the site going with minimal staff and furlough the rest of their staff until life returns to normal. I really can't see that their staff operation is that large, other than AIBU voting, I've not seen a web/app feature enhancements for years.

peachgreen · 08/04/2020 21:11

@sarahandduck I agree. Wish they'd just ban it as a topic or at least consign it all to one off-shoot forum. But I guess it will depend on which side of the debate brings in the most cash!

Abracad · 08/04/2020 21:11

Not in a million years.

I'm liking this idea, @GinWithASplashOfTonic

UYScuti · 08/04/2020 21:13

I'm still waiting for MN to pay me for my fantastic advice and witty repartee etc

GinDrinker00 · 08/04/2020 21:16

No if the ads get on my nerves I’ll just go back to Facebook. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Rather spend the fiver on wine. Grin

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 21:18

Ironically if they were paying posters that might actually go some way to explaining the huge monthly wage bill. Grin

DoWePay · 08/04/2020 21:18

I think I've been here about 10 years.

It's a horrible place to be as a parent of a trans child and consequently I don't use it as much these days. I don't feel Mnet have done enough in this area.

VegetableMunge · 08/04/2020 21:20

I would only be willing to make anonymous donations if no further concessions are made to people who think discussion of the threat the trans rights agenda posed to women is transphobic. Far, far too much ground has been given already.

GotTheCityOnLockdown · 08/04/2020 21:20

@GinWithASplashOfTonic Oh that would be brilliant.

Can't though. No swearing, no telling people straight.
No anything that isn't butterflies and rainbows and hunny, hubby, bubba, mummy lolz.

And the tickers. Oh, the tickers

Daffodil101 · 08/04/2020 21:24

I’d have paid for it years ago.

I’ve been here for 15 years. There are lots more stupid people here now.

Queenlish · 08/04/2020 21:25

I bet if whoever runs netmums realised the MN crew needed somewhere new to go they would change things.

Thymelord · 08/04/2020 21:25

wondered where Talkinpeace had gone - she was lovely

I wondered that top. She gave me some fantastic detailed advice last year, that really helped me a lot.

On the subject of the OP, no I wont subscribe. I think they have really messed up here tbh. I'll go to reddit instead.

Thymelord · 08/04/2020 21:26

15 seconds to edit that ^^ mess eh, Grin

VegetableMunge · 08/04/2020 21:27

Where has talkinpeace gone?

Carbosug · 08/04/2020 21:27

Might have done a few years ago. But the site has lost its sparkle. Too many posters taking offence at everything and anything, stifling debate and being 'pc gone mad'.

So many witty, quirky and amusing posters have deserted the forum, and it's just not the same.

DuchessofManchester · 08/04/2020 21:27

Oh god not the tickers.... maybe mumsnet could make that a premium feature?
I won't be paying for a premium service there's nothing premium about it
