I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

OP posts:
OlaEliza · 08/04/2020 18:04

I wouldn't (won't) pay for such a backwards site, in terms of facilities.

I don't see why the forums can't have basic forum features. I'd edit, quote, filter by op posts etc. These are standard anywhere else.

BootShakin · 08/04/2020 18:05

I appreciate not all of that 350k is spent on moderators, but I also doubt it's sent on a decent tech team.

The UX is so shit, the tech team needs to be fired. There is no excuse of having to use '*' in these days and age to bold something.

I appreciate they are a business but if 80% of the people who don't want to pay bugger off, there won't be MN. The advantage of MN is it is the biggest forum for women in the UK.

NumberMonkey · 08/04/2020 18:08

I understand why and have paid to be a member of other forums.

But DH is newly redundant and I only went self employed in January so we’re having to cut out all non-essentials to cover bills.

JemSynergy · 08/04/2020 18:11

No of course not and definitely not at £5.99. It reminds me of the memberships on YouTube which youtubers ask subscribers to pay. Subscribers who don't realise that youtubers get income from the ads and all the other benefits pay these memberships which as mentioned above causes a hierarchy.

Epos · 08/04/2020 18:11

alloutoffucks Don’t get your point. That’s just plain gossip. Pay if you want. Don’t pay if you don’t want. Like every other business, if you are unhappy, go somewhere else. There’s no need to go deeper into how they structure their business, what charges they have against them, how they are splitting their post tax profit. This is all legal btw and they are paying big money to accountants and tax advisors to make these decisions for them. This thread just appear to be a gossip pit. If you are unhappy here then move on.

Whattheduck · 08/04/2020 18:11

I agree with @NoSauce about the trolls etc
I have been coming on here for 15 years + but I don’t come on it all the time up until Christmas of last year I don’t think I’d been on here for about a year or so
I wouldn’t pay I’d look elsewhere

labazsisgoingmad · 08/04/2020 18:12

i simply cannot afford to pay will they be offering a basic service just so we can keep our friends i dont get on with Netmums so not sure what i will do

Purpleclownsuit · 08/04/2020 18:12

100 employees apparently! Doing what?! Shock

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 18:14

As I said upthread the reason people are talking about staff costs & profit is because imo when mistakes are made the image is very much a couple of people sitting around a kitchen table drinking tea with a load of old tech & wires everywhere trying to "muddle through" not a slick business operation.

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 08/04/2020 18:15

Lol no, I paid the same for Disney+ which is a much better use of my time. I'm only coming back on out of habit now, MN and Covid has given me an unpleasant insight I to just how horrible a lot of people are. The bitching, judging, pointscoring and out and out nastiness has shocked me and I've been on MN for years.

Queenlish · 08/04/2020 18:15

For those asking about LangCleg

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3801630-LangCleg

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 18:15

How are they justifying the cost of 5.99?

Xyzzzzz · 08/04/2020 18:16

Nah I’ll stick to reddit.

£5.99 is what I pay for Disney plus and that better content

Sargass0 · 08/04/2020 18:16

Mummyoflittledragon nice sentiment but that fiver would be better going directly to a charity that deals with those issues imo. People can still use the site- if they don't subscribe, they will just have the ads!

carly2803 · 08/04/2020 18:16

no. I like reading and sometimes replying, but there are other (Free!) forums

IceIceCoffee · 08/04/2020 18:17

Honestly I thought it was an April fools joke at first as I’ve not been on mumsnet loads so thought it was an old post

alloutoffucks · 08/04/2020 18:17

@epos Of course I can go elsewhere. And if I can't use an adblocker I will. I just find it strange that a business that makes a couple of million in profits is asking for money from us to support them as if they were a charity. It does seem dishonest to me.

Clymene · 08/04/2020 18:18

How bizarre @Epos - Mumsnet is effectively asking users to invest in their business. It's normal to carry out due diligence before you do that isn't it? At the moment, they are asking for a service which is currently free with very vague promises about the benefits and no reassurances about what processes have been out in place to avoid another data breach.

Icare1234 · 08/04/2020 18:18

It will be obvious who has and has not subscribed with edit. Basic features like edit, proper search, seeing OP posts only and proper quotes should be open to all. If they are not I’d feel uncomfortable subscribing.

Then as I’m fortunate to be earning I’d consider paying for no ad version or other extras that would not be evident to other users.

flirtygirl · 08/04/2020 18:19

Not just LangCleg

Talkinpeace spent her time helping those with debt. She was very knowledgeable and produced spreadsheets for people to use and always gave friendly advice.

Banned for no good reason, the bans are arbitrary at best.

I've seen people on here not banned when they should have been.

SwedishEdith · 08/04/2020 18:20

I missed Justine's thread earlier so have had a quick scroll. I can't see what the free site would be like. Is it just like this one but the subscription site has an edit button and fewer ads? I don't care about and edit button and use an ad blocker so what would be the difference? And I'm from when I used to sometimes send a cheque to help them in the early days Grin.

middleager · 08/04/2020 18:21

Thanks Queenlish for sharing.
I bet those goady MRAs who got safeguarding expert Lang banned will cough up this fee. Not.

Whereas, like Lang and co. I've been here for 15 years, a regular, and would happily pay if my rights as a woman to talk about issues that impact on females, to discuss child protection and safeguarding, had not been censored because some middle aged man took offence.

HarrySnotter · 08/04/2020 18:22

Not right now, no.

alloutoffucks · 08/04/2020 18:22

Yes a service proposition says you pay x, you get y. That is how Netflix that I do pay for markets itself.
This is very vague, and is more a please support us. And lots of those who are saying they will give money are explicitly saying they see it as a donation. Up to them of course. But my view is why would you want to donate to a business that makes over 2 million after tax profits, but will have less profits this year?

Epos · 08/04/2020 18:23

Clymene You are confusing investment and paying for a service for use.
