I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

I'm happy to pay and have done so. I get a lot out of the site and would miss it if it wasn't there. Offers everything - advice, sympathy, practical tips and a lot of humour. It's unique. Thanks Mumsnet!

Atla · 08/04/2020 18:24

Nope

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/04/2020 18:25

No. Only because I’ve no money! I’m an agency nurse currently on SSP of 98pw as we’re self isolating. DH is furloughed from his company.

alloutoffucks · 08/04/2020 18:25

@Epos But it is not clear what service we would actually get. What does less adverts mean? People would need to know before deciding if the service was actually worthwhile.
What they are actually being asked to do is donate.

bellinisurge · 08/04/2020 18:27

No. I can live without Mumsnet rather than spend £50

winniesanderson · 08/04/2020 18:27

Is this really not a joke or a weird kind of hack or something?

LucyFox · 08/04/2020 18:30

Nope, not that invested in being here
Sorry

Clymene · 08/04/2020 18:30

It's not me who is confused @Epos - that's exactly the tone Justine is taking - that it's more of a donation than a service. And we are the product so it's not that clear cut.

If it's a service then there has to be a much bigger differential between free and paid for. And that would be the death knell of the boards. Are there any paid for talkboards which are successful?

UYScuti · 08/04/2020 18:31

the site has value because of the high level of traffic, if you have to pay to use it that would drop, I might give it a try but I doubt it.
MN is fun and informative but it's also a huge time suck and in many ways I think my life would be better if there was a higher bar to prevent me from dipping in and out all day.
As with facebook, twitter etc it would be a different kind of animal if you had to pay to participate, that's my off the cuff guess.

QuacksInTheDark · 08/04/2020 18:31

No paying to have people rip you to shreds at every opportunity doesn’t appeal.

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 18:32

Apparently 200 odd people have already subscribed. I'm amazed at how many people have willingly handed over money without knowing all the information. Hmm

Eggcited · 08/04/2020 18:32

Nope, the link to the thread is in the OP.

canigooutyet · 08/04/2020 18:32

Anyone wondering about security breaches and the intern, google it. It’s all out there.

Stripe is okay however there are other better options out there that are more secure. And the owners clearly need all the help they can on that department.

It’s not about wages. It’s about bonuses and shareholders. It’s nearly the end of the financial year and suddenly they are broke. Bull fucking shit.

Maybe if their ads weren’t as intrusive more people would turn off their blockers and more people will click.

Wasn’t charging the demise of bad mums?

ZenDay · 08/04/2020 18:34

I'd love to subscribe to a site like this but I have an issue with how difficult this site is to navigate. It's almost impossible to see who's replying to comments.

I also find the Ds, DD, DNDN, etc very annoying.

The owner of the site needs to do a complete revamp before they ask people to subscribe.

Redglitter · 08/04/2020 18:34

I would pay if the premium service included more. Adverts dont bother me enough to warrant paying a fiver a month. If being a premium member gave you extra features then I'd consider it

Bella2020 · 08/04/2020 18:35

No. I'm sure there must be others on here who, like me, only get benefits and can't spare any more money each month.

I think it's a very disappointing move, tbh. I hope what's left available to non-subscribers isn't too different.

lilybetsy · 08/04/2020 18:35

Yes. I have subscribed. I enjoy using it ... and no ads is nice !

HavenDilemma · 08/04/2020 18:37

@Pipandmum The free version will always remain they said. The only difference is ads, right now anyway

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 18:37

Yes. I have subscribed. I enjoy using it ... and no ads is nice !

But you can still use the site without subscribing and the subscription means you will get fewer ads not that they will be gone altogether.

canigooutyet · 08/04/2020 18:38

@lilybetsy
I have my ads blocked cost me nothing. Same with many others.

Eggcited · 08/04/2020 18:38

It's not no ads, it's Fewer ads

canigooutyet · 08/04/2020 18:39

Oh wow so they charging everyone for something that is free 🤣 🤣
Shareholders and bonuses.

Covidisdrivingmecrazy · 08/04/2020 18:39

I've paid. It's worth it to me to get rid of the ads. I'm lucky that I'm in public sector and still getting paid (workload tripled but is a crisis and that's what we're here for). There's no other site that I've had as much helpful advice from at all points of my life. The coronavirus update threads are worth it alone. Also why are we suggesting that they're paying their staff too much? Really?

drunkyhumptydumpty · 08/04/2020 18:41

@Covidisdrivingmecrazy but it won't get rid of the ads.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 08/04/2020 18:41

Lots of companies are struggling atm but they tend to be in industries that have been forced to close because of lockdown (which obviously doesn't apply to MN) or companies whose finances were already precarious (which MN shouldn't have been).
And if the directors haven't put contingencies in place and chose instead to spend it on chickens, conservatories and parking spaces then it's a bit rich to ask users (many of whom are on much lower income than MNHQ) to cough up for their lifestyle (which said users have already paid for by providing content and click-throughs).
