I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

I'm all for a paid for subscription. Finally I could stop wasting time on MN

Justanotherlurker · 08/04/2020 16:23

I don’t think £4.99 a month is terrible as I know roughly how much they’d make per 1,000 page views and god knows most of us do at least a thousand page views a month on AIBU alone!

It is when the wage bill is what it is, they can't even get decent devs in for that price, there are better off the shelf bulletin board systems more secure with more features.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 16:24

For those who are wondering why MN is in such a black hole at the moment, my business also depends on ad revenue and around 73% of businesses have now paused or massively reduced their ad spend.

But this is MNs the land where you have 6 months savings & put away money for when times are lean! 😜

drunkyhumptydumpty · 08/04/2020 16:25

Has MN considered doing the neighbours ironing?

diddl · 08/04/2020 16:25

"But what's this about a staff member giving out people's data?!? Tell me more!"

I'm also interested in that!

YgritteSnow · 08/04/2020 16:26

I think £4.99 is unrealistic for what you get. Feels like the decision making around how much to charge consisted of "well who can't afford a fiver a month eh?!" and that's about it. I'd probably pay it, grudgingly, if I had to.

Mumsnet is making alot more than your bog standard site just with google ads.

Even with the rate falls the fixed costs to host they'll still be making many many multiples more for views.

the 350k wage bill a month is a real mystery. I think they needed to look at that before talking about needing money to keep the lights on.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/04/2020 16:27

And funnily enough on the day they announce this it seems the adverts on the right side are even more intrusive. Now taking up nearly 50% width of the iPad and moving, intrusive adverts.

And of course no incentive now to make the user experience better because they will say well just pay £5 a month. I imagine the plan is to make the adverts more and more intrusive on purpose.

Will be the nail in the coffin for MN. I say that as someone who’s been here for 19 years and remember the old days are having to subscribe to be able to CAT another poster.

Branleuse · 08/04/2020 16:28

Thats a lot of money considering would probably still get banned for accidentally calling people cunts

canigooutyet · 08/04/2020 16:29

It’s probably to fund their gin bill.Tbh I scrolled down to the cost. The bits I skimmed just seemed like a lot of irrelevant waffle. Oh they might be paid by every letter typed.

Skittlesss · 08/04/2020 16:29

They’re taking it in once they’ve finished their shift at their new job: Tesco.

BeijingBikini · 08/04/2020 16:29

Sponging? I'm pretty sure that sites where the user provides the content make a lot of money from selling off data, like stories to the Mail. AdBlock is perfectly legal, and if they wanted to make good use of that 350m wage bill, they could program their site so it doesn't work with AdBlock (like Daily Mail have done). Of course I'll use AdBlock while I have the option to. They should have thought about getting some cash reserves to weather a crisis - the actual MN posters have been banging on about Coronavirus and the shutdown it will cause since January, so they can't say they never saw it coming.

Bringringbring12 · 08/04/2020 16:29

If they have that kind of level of expenditure - then they should regard this as a good opportunity to streamline costs!

YgritteSnow · 08/04/2020 16:30

I also suspect those who pay would have that taken into consideration when/if their posts are reported and/or they're behaving like arseholes.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/04/2020 16:30

I don't care about an edit button and I think it would mean some threads won't make sense depending on how long people have to edit for.
And I run it on my phone which already blocks all the ads for me (can't remember how I sorted that out but it does.)

Scruffyoak · 08/04/2020 16:32

Nope. Loads always post about being on 60k + a year so I will leave that for them lol

Bringringbring12 · 08/04/2020 16:33

Hmmmm it’s been taken off as a pinned thread

morriseysquif · 08/04/2020 16:33

Is is really £350k a month???? Shock

Perhaps we need to ask -
What are the roles and how many?

They need to furlough a few staff maybe.

It has been two /three weeks and they have no stash fund? Where is all the money going?

Software and IT must be the big cost

Samcro · 08/04/2020 16:34

i won't
broke here. so will leave it to the rich.

Growingboys · 08/04/2020 16:34

Definitely not. Way too much money and MN is not an important part of my life. Plus we've had cuts to our salaries and are tightening our belts.

Plus I would like clarification on why they're on their uppers - as others have said, it's a WEBSITE. I get why other businesses are struggling but surely ad revenue here should be up? Or at the very least not down.

Or am I missing something?

Either way I'd rather give it up than pay.

OP do you work for MN?

Bringringbring12 · 08/04/2020 16:35

Anyone feeling misled that mumsnet said that there was a blip with search function and that would be up soon

But clear now only if pay

Saucery · 08/04/2020 16:36

They must think they’ve attracted enough marks for now. All giddy about getting something other site members won’t have. Hmm
Like, ummmm, partially blocked ads.....whoopee shit....

At a time when social media communication is so important to so many people, Mumsnet has to be the site that cynically takes advantage of that
