I'm not sure yet but I'll probably pay for a month and then see what other features they bring in.

Thread by Justine incase you haven't seen it

YABU = No

YANBU = Yes, I might give it a try

OP posts:

@MusterMark I don't think they pay well - usually graduates just out of university who stay for six months and move on.

Oxyiz · 08/04/2020 15:57

Oh, I hadn't seen this. What a shame if it goes down a payment/special members route.

Even if I could spare that (and with DH's job ending I can't), I wouldn't share my details like that. I don't even use my real email address - as others have said it's not secure. I've lost count of the number of data breaches over the years. (Jeffery and Emma are two that come to mind.)

Stet · 08/04/2020 15:58

@MusterMark It's a month. They'd be on 350k a year if there were only 12 Grin

Clavinova · 08/04/2020 15:58

I'm not sure yet.

This is certainly true;

"I sometimes think mumsnet is a black hole that sucks time and I regret ever going on it! So if they start charging, for me that's a good reason to stop using it."

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 08/04/2020 15:58

No I won't subscribe. Too much of a risk of my personal details and bank details getting out, and also, only having 'fewer' ads is not much of an incentive. Why not NO ads?

Also, you can put an adblocker on anyway if you wish.

I know they are having financial issues at the moment (apparently,) but I won't subscribe, especially as I don't spend that much time on here anyway!

AND there is no edit function which really pisses me off to be honest. Justine said they are thinking of introducing a 15 second one, which is completely pointless. That wouldn't give you time to go through half of your post, let alone click on 'edit post,' correct your mistakes, and re-submit it.

FGS give us at least 2 minutes. Even on 'digital spy' you get 6 minutes to edit and correct your post, (even as a newbie.) And when you have been there for so long (or posted more than 200 posts or something like that,) they extend it to 15 minutes. But even 2 minutes would be better than 15 seconds!

How interesting that nearly 80% of almost 900 people say they won't be subscribing. Mumsnet is going to have to find their lost revenue from elsewhere! (Or close down.)

Thighmageddon · 08/04/2020 15:58

Jesus that wage bill per month Shock

I know for a fact our branch of the company I work for doesn't even remotely have a wage bill that high per month!

No I probably won't pay despite being here many years under different names.

I might not have a job at the end of this and even though my dh job is secure, I'm not asking him for money to pay for me to chat shit on the internet and I'm certainly not using my savings for that purpose either.

Outtedagain · 08/04/2020 15:58

Not a chance,
It’s like the invitation to tip in a self service restaurant. Hmm. Naaa

VegetableMunge · 08/04/2020 15:58

People I know irl have been infinitely ruder about the PM than the smattering of mostly rather restrained comments that have got past the self appointed moral guardians on here. From where I'm sitting, it's the people complaining about the criticism that are out of touch.

Stet · 08/04/2020 15:59

@GetOffYourHighHorse I'll be going back and making sure the Sistine Chapel screamer gets gold
Grin

FortunesFave · 08/04/2020 15:59

Muster from the state of this site, I doubt they have 5 software developers!

MusterMark · 08/04/2020 15:59

I read they have 12!

PleaseStopCrying · 08/04/2020 15:59

350K doesn't seem much on salaries to me. It's 12 people at most. If you have a team of 5 software developers, that's 250K gone if you are lucky.

Thats per month not per year. They pay wages of 350k a month. How is that physically possible when there is only a chat forum and a website.

handslikecowstits · 08/04/2020 16:00

No, because a) I'm not on here often enough and b) I remember Jeffgate and subsequent attempted hackings/leaks and there's no way MN is having my financial info after all that. They've shown me that their security is far too lax to be trusted.

I'm intrigued to know how the lifting of threads is going to work. Is MN only going to allow those threads of the 'free' users to be lifted for fear of being sued by the 'premium' users? Will HQ take the view that it's open season on 'frees' and that they will only protect 'premiums'?

Are only the 'free' users going to be banned if they go against talk guidelines? What if a 'premium' posts something goady? Will they be treated differently? Will they be able to hide behind their subscription status?

And what about PBPs: will they be allowed back on as long as they pay because MN needs the money?

Lots to think about for MNHQ. I fear this will be a bumpy ride...

cantata · 08/04/2020 16:00

I can't. I have no income at all now.

BurgerQuean · 08/04/2020 16:00

No. This site tends to make me feel worse about my life, not better, and I’m not enough of a glutton for punishment to pay for that privilege.

FortunesFave · 08/04/2020 16:00

Muster Jesus really!? What do they do all day I wonder?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 08/04/2020 16:02

Too much for my blood in afraid.
With it costing similar to Disney+ a month, I'd rather pay for Disney for the whole household than to pay to be on MN and told I'm a jackass, moron, idiot, nazi etc.

SarahInAccounts · 08/04/2020 16:02

I own and run a niche website with 2 friends. We don't have a huge number of members but we've been happy to pay for what is, essentially, a hobby.

Our host upped the price considerably and we had to consider if it was worth carrying on. We mentioned it to the members and, just has happened here, the members were happy to stump up but expected a say in how the site was run.

That seemed fair enough to us and we made a few changes.

So, MNHQ, if you want our money you don't get to tell us how the site is to be run. We get some input.

If you aren't happy with that and expect to run it as randomly as you do now then don't ask for our money.

Expecting people to pay and have no say is daft.

Nicknacky · 08/04/2020 16:02

12 software developers? For a website like this that has had so many user issues?

Wow.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 08/04/2020 16:02

What would I be paying for? To be called a dripfeeding cunt by user[random collection of numbers] because I missed a small detail of backstory from my request for advice? I can get that for free.

The UI is outdated, the site security is questionable, the app is flaky, the moderation is quite frankly batshit and 75% of the current users seem to revel in putting the boot in no matter how vulnerable the OP so no, I won't be paying. The only reason I stay now is FWR; this might be the push that I need to reclaim some of my free time.

Saucery · 08/04/2020 16:03

Premium users are going to get much, much more leeway with posts that skirt or breach the guidelines than Free users.
Particularly the ones who pay monthly. Justine is saying she can’t pay the wage bill potentially. Mods are not going to cut off multiple revenue streams i.e. people willing to pay.

JoyceDivision · 08/04/2020 16:04

£350k monthly salary bill? No chance.

Pay for a premium membership of a site where content is generated by users? Nope.

Good old Mumsnet, a two tier system to get back to the middle class site it used to be.

CobyKnobe · 08/04/2020 16:06

Hang on mumsnet has a turnover of 8m and a profit of 2m for the last couple of years?

I've got great sympathies for companies facing issues, but the moderation and features here do leave alot to be desired. It's just a message board and has such huge power and works with brands alot. I think it would be better to cut your cloth. As a tech company even with a fall in ads it should be easy to survive without asking for money.

I think it sounds very unprofessional asking for money to "keep the lights on"

How many millions has the owner made?

Nicknacky · 08/04/2020 16:06

I think you have lost a lot of sympathy with that monthly wages bill.

Mencho · 08/04/2020 16:07

I doubt I’d bother paying for a subscription.

It’s almost certainly true that ad revenue has dropped considerably because I run a website and I’m having the same problem. Access to the site has actually gone up but ad revenue has gone down. Fewer businesses are paying to advertise. I don’t know what system mumsnet uses for ads but usually you get paid a certain amount per click on a banner or whatever. The amount a website receives per click has gone down drastically in the last month or so.
