AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

This seems to be very location dependent, slots are like gold dust in some areas and fairly easy to get in others. And also some people haven't registered as vulnerable, which is now what the supermarkets are using to prioritize customers. So I'm not going to judge people for having slots, they may be shopping for others or have invisible illnesses, you never know.

Localocal · 07/04/2020 20:30

You are right. I just cancelled my regular weekly order for this very reason. I don't know why it only occurred to me this week to do it, but well done OP for putting the suggestion out there.

Spinachtastegud · 07/04/2020 20:52

Gosh people can be so judgemental on here ...I think ideally no one should be going shopping atm and I completely understand why most would prefer delivery - any one of us could succumb to this terrible virus let's remember that, plus people have varying degrees of anxiety to deal with. People should decide what is a reasonable to do in these circumstances and not feel guilty about this.

boo2410 · 07/04/2020 21:01

I understand people not wanting to go out but I can't get a delivery slot with Tesco for love nor money. I have MS and since 2015 have been unable to walk and am housebound so totally rely on the delivery service as there is no one I can ask to get my shopping.

I've got a slot for this Friday then I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm not in a vulnerable category, it's just my legs that don't work so I can only get about in my wheelchair. I'm going to ring Tesco but to be honest I don't hold out much hope.

1981m · 07/04/2020 21:01

Carb- I couldn't care less if you respected me or not. I am not selfish and won't be made to feel so by abusers on here.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/04/2020 21:18

Abusers Hmm

paintedfences · 07/04/2020 21:21

You could have a look around for fruit and veg wholesalers, butchers who are now delivering. Lots of them in my area.

ceeveebee · 07/04/2020 21:25

I’ve had Ocado delivery every week for the last at least 10 years. I’ve been using some of the slot for my parents (over 70). And am adding my vulnerable friends shopping in with mine every time and going dropping it off on her doorstep. Yes I could give up the slots I have but you have to book so far in advance, what happens if one of us gets symptoms in the next week and then none of us can go out for 14 days?

MamaBearOnLockdown · 07/04/2020 21:42

Supermarkets only release slots a day at a time, if that. How could some people hog the slots?

FaveNumberIs2 · 07/04/2020 21:53

Yeah? And some of us are still key workers and only want to go out for work, we don’t want the extra hassle of going out for shopping when we need to stay well to work.

And no, most of us are not working from home. More are getting furloughed and laid off by the day, and a lot of us simply can not work from home.

Livelovebehappy · 07/04/2020 22:03

What did the people do who have no car prior to lockdown? Obviously I get it about the vulnerable etc needing deliveries, but why suddenly are people with no car classed as worthy of having slots above others, when presumably they managed before?

Tubs11 · 07/04/2020 22:30

I've been an online shopper for years and I think it's unreasonable to expect regular users to give up their slots. The service wouldn't exist if we didn't shop online in the first place. Personally, what we're doing is using it sparingly i.e. instead of a weekly shop we're doing 1 in 3. That frees up two of our regular slots for those that need it. We're in a financial position to be able to do that and it means we're not out and about more than we need too. We have zero support here and my partner has previously had a tracheostomy though isn't on any vulnerable list that I know of. Either way, I see this as a reasonable compromise to ensure fair access where possible.

LeukaeLucky · 07/04/2020 22:41

Completely agree. I'm "extremely vulnerable" registered and everything and can't get a delivery slot. Thankfully my council has been delivering food parcels to my home because I live by myself with my children and haven't been out for nearly 3 weeks.

CollaborativeBee · 07/04/2020 22:57

@Livelovebehappy because we used to be able to get online deliveries. Kind of obvious!?

I agree that the service wouldn't exist if it weren't for the usual customers.

I can't get a slot now, so all the people with cars who never needed online shopping are using it now.

But it is what it is.

Noconceptofnormal · 07/04/2020 23:02

I'm not giving up my slots as I have my disabled sibling living with me (who falls into an extremely vulnerable category), three young kids and I am also using them to get shopping for my elderly parents.

Yes I could go to the supermarket but with the limits on milk, eggs etc I can't physically get enough for 8 people every week in one shop. So I get what I can in the online shop then have to top up in the supermarket.

I spend many hours a week on food shopping at the moment and it's really not easy.

Yes there are people worse off but there are also plenty of people who are better off who are still getting slots so I don't feel guilty (eg saw supermarket van pull up the other day for neighbours in their 50s - yes older than me but not really old and don't have the disabled or really old family members).

LeukaeLucky · 07/04/2020 23:06

I love how people say they don't want the hassle of going to the shop. I wish I had the choice and didn't have to text a neighbour to buy me tampax... And at least 10 more weeks of that...

Rainbow · 07/04/2020 23:51

am healthy and I have a car but I also have children (one SEN child) who I would rather not shop with. I am also a key worker so my children are still going to school while I go to work. After, what is for me, a normal day including school run, making dinner etc. I am too tired to go to the supermarket, queue up for an hour, spend about an hour in the shop wrestling 4 tired, grumpy children who want to be at home like their friends, not at school. So yes YABU asking me to give up my delivery slot for someone else.

MigginsMrs · 08/04/2020 00:11

YANBU

stop judging people just for doing things differently to you.

In the interests of disclosure, I don’t do online shopping at all, pandemic or otherwise

MigginsMrs · 08/04/2020 00:29

YABU I meant, need my bed

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 08/04/2020 00:33

@Livelovebehappy what did people do who didn’t have cars before? Well, we got online delivery every week Hmm It’s not a new invention it’s just the demand has soared. Many of us have been having online delivery exclusively for a decade.

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 08/04/2020 00:39

(We do have a car now. We need online because we are contagious)

Carbosug · 08/04/2020 06:43

No one's abusing you @1981m. You have posted a string of posts insisting you're not being selfish by regularly using home delivery when you have no particular need and those slots could literally be a life saver to vulnerable shoppers. Some posters are just pointing out that yes, that is actually being selfish.

Dilovescake21 · 08/04/2020 08:08

YABU.

CollaborativeBee · 08/04/2020 08:17

I cant get one anyway. All booked up for as far in advance as they're available. So my loyalty to the service counts for nothing.

CollaborativeBee · 08/04/2020 08:18

@oncemorewithfeeling99 exactly, that was how i managed before.
