AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

I’m in my late sixties and my husband mid seventies. Thankfully we are fit and well. I set off at about 6.30am and walk through the woods with our dogs. I have my rucksack on my back and I call at the local Coop a couple of times every week to pick up some milk, a French stick which lasts us about three days, probably some bacon and eggs and other essentials- whatever I can get in my rucksack to be honest. Then I walk back through the woods. We’re eating less because we’re not getting the exercise that we were before.

Having said that, it pisses me off a bit when I see Asda delivery vehicle pull up outside neighbours’ houses who are half my age and surely must be more able than me to do their shopping? I don’t even look for a delivery slot because there aren’t any.

I have a friend who is our age group and she has really played on the ‘vulnerable’ card until she got her GP to authorise her as high risk. She now has a dedicated fortnightly delivery slot and moans like mad if anything she has ordered is out of stock. I feel like screaming. Try lugging a rucksack with milk, bread, potatoes, a couple of tins of beans, a pack of bacon and sausage and some cheese on your back on an hour’s walk like I did this morning and then bloody moan!

MyWitzEnd · 07/04/2020 18:13

Instead of boris writing to everyone (though i didnt get a letter) they should have issued vulnerability numbers, these could have then been used by supermarkets to prioritise

ThisIsMyStory1 · 07/04/2020 18:13

I've had a Sainsbury’s slot for about 2 years, never miss it. They emailed me to say I was one of their vulnerable workers which means I've been able to maintain my weekly order.

I'm a critical worker in the civil service, husband is self employed and we have two disabled children. I drive and have no outstanding health conditions but there is no way I'd give my slot up. My children are both asthmatic and their needs means it usually takes two of us to keep them safe, so someone going shopping for a few hours just isn't practical.

I use my slot to buy things for my parents and any other family who need things, you can't judge people who seem okay and have a slot, it's ridiculous. You've no idea of their circumstances.

Wall0ps · 07/04/2020 18:14

I’m shielding and I’ve registered myself on the government list. Still can’t get a slot.

ThisIsMyStory1 · 07/04/2020 18:16

*vulnerable customer, not worker

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 07/04/2020 18:17

Both adults have COVID 19 caused pneumonia with no family who live within two hours. Friends will go get the odd thing for us but obviously can’t do a full shop every week. We have children so need a fair amount of food.

It’s for everyone’s benefit that we don’t go to a supermarket! So no, I don’t feel bad having a supermarket delivery.

MangosteenSoda · 07/04/2020 18:18

I think everyone knows whether or not they personally need a delivery slot. It would be nice if those that don't actually need it didn't use it.

I think it's really difficult to account for all of the variables and while a lot of people are thinking of others' greater need during this time, I guess a lot of people haven't realised their own comparative privilege.

Honestly, I think the government could have done a lot more to care for and protect vulnerable groups if they had acted in advance and worked in conjunction with businesses. We are on the back foot and it clearly shows.

Suzypoo10 · 07/04/2020 18:19

I am a vulnerable person - I am diabetic, I have a heart condition and high blood pressure, and turned 60 a couple of weeks ago. I have not been able to get any delivery at all, so am having to go out shopping and I am terrified. If I get this, then I have a higher percentage of not surviving. As I am “only” vulnerable, not critically vulnerable, I don’t qualify for any of the special shop opening hours; nor from the groups set up in my town, who are only help those who are self-isolating. I am also a key worker (IT) but not customer facing.

easyandy101 · 07/04/2020 18:21

I'm looking after my 83 not in brilliant health mother, cognitive disorder, would probably have been diagnosed with dementia if her scan and appointment hadn't been delayed by Corona

We can't get any slots as my mum despite being 83 and not in brilliant health doesn't qualify as vulnerable.

I don't blame healthy people for using the slots though. People need to do what they need to do to feel safe and i don't resent that

littlemisskt · 07/04/2020 18:23

I was following the advice given of ‘if you can go to the shops then do’ but now we’ve had to self isolate and I’ve been scrabbling around to find various different deliveries for us to have food next week. I have tried really hard to get enough food in the freezer/cupboards but then husband left a load out of the freezer by accident when putting some new stuff in...

Sunnyhopefulness · 07/04/2020 18:25

Having really struggled to get a delivery for my 80+ housebound parents who live hours away - I agree with you .

2 of my neighbours are getting everything delivered as well as numerous amazon type deliveries ...feel really sorry for their delivery drivers

user1472151176 · 07/04/2020 18:34

I do agree. Especially for the people having to isolate for 12 weeks. I don't even know how they must be managing. However, is it becoming more frequently noted in the news that people of all ages in Great health are also dying from this god awful virus. Scary times.

alliecader · 07/04/2020 18:43

The vulnerable slots have extremely strict criteria, narrower than the definition of underlying health conditions doctors are using to judge the likelihood of survival from Covid-19. My 85-year-old father has kidney disease (which is relevant) and has had two heart attacks, but does not meet the criteria. I live with him and my 82-year-old mother and none of us can risk going out as he would probably die if he got the virus.

We have been in isolation for three weeks with food running out, and no way can I get a delivery slot with any supermarket. I am up through the night every night trying to get one. We have small amounts from neighbours but we are increasingly short on supplies and the rest of our family live at the other end of the country so cannot help. So yes, if you are healthy, do please consider giving up your delivery slots. However, as pointed out, it would only work if the freed slots went to those who need them. It should be a simple matter for all supermarkets to have people's dates of birth, and allocate slots accordingly. I am so frustrated that this has not been put in place. This is the 21st century and it's not rocket science.

Rachel1874 · 07/04/2020 18:54

Well the problem is that the advice is stay at home and it applies to everyone. Also healthy people may not be as healthy as they seem. But there should be some sort of way so that the same people are hogging spots.

ChipotleBlessing · 07/04/2020 18:58

@alliecader do either of your parents have a nectar card? Sainsbury’s also allocate priority slots to over 70s if they have a nectar card.

Jack80 · 07/04/2020 18:58

I think we are all looking our for ourselves and protecting our families, if a slot become available take it I'm sure there are separate slots for the vulnerable or so I thought.

Diva66 · 07/04/2020 19:06

YABU.

Workingmum34 · 07/04/2020 19:07

Depends. I’ve got shopping orders coming that I have booked in. I am working looking after key worker and vulnerable kids in one school. My husband is doing the same at his, plus delivering meals to free school meal kids and volunteering. So between us we are coming into contact with a lot people. Going to the supermarket would expose a lot of people to the people we have come into contact with. Plus we are adding all our neighbour orders to our deliveries. I don’t think that is unreasonable.

CrisisCrunchie · 07/04/2020 19:07

I did just this today.. we can get to the shops up some can’t 👌🏻

ToftyAC · 07/04/2020 19:15

I’m a key worker and on the vulnerable list. We’ve already had 2 people I work with be off with the virus. Our 2 local supermarkets pretty much told me to piss off re delivery or click & collect I have mouths to feed. So the shop it is.

Purplekaz08 · 07/04/2020 19:15

I am a nhs worker as is my husband. I paid for a years delivery pass last year when I broke my ankle badly and was house bound for months. I have returned to work recently but am continuing with my weekly on line shop even though I could go to the supermarket. To be honest I had not considering stopping my online shop.

CollaborativeBee · 07/04/2020 19:18

Not that I've managed to get a slot but I agree with the second poster, you forgot ''have a car''.

Also, I'm a single parent, I have two hungry kids, I am still working (not at home) and I've no car. Things aren't easy right now. I don't want some campaign to prevent all healthy people from ever getting a delivery slot.

rainbowbear10 · 07/04/2020 19:39

i have Rhumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and asthma don't drive or have access to a car and not classed as vulnerable by the government. i have been unable to get a slot on any Supermarket home delivery for over 4 weeks. I think the supermarkets should be limiting those with regular deliveries to two a month so the rest of us who were regular users before this pandemic. can get a chance of a delivery

Carbosug · 07/04/2020 19:45

@1981m. Any chance you'd stop your constant self justification. I'd actually have more respect for you if you just came out and said Yes I'm selfish and don't really care about anyone else and am therefore hogging valuable slots for my low risk family.

At least it would be honest.

Retired65 · 07/04/2020 19:53

No. We are all in danger of getting this virus. I am relying on my Gousto box for our meals. I am nearly seventy and have high blood pressure.
