AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

Thanks so much @MyDcAreMarvel. I have the same email on the register and my Tesco account but I was a bit late off the mark signing up to the register waiting for an actual letter to arrive instead of just signing up with the text, so maybe it'll get there eventually? I hope so, I think I'll be a lot less stressy if I could sort out the food situation.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/04/2020 23:51

@FourTeaFallOut it took nine days after I registered for the supermarkets to prioritise me, so hopefully you will hear soon as it’s very stressful when you can’t safely get food.

Rubyupbeat · 07/04/2020 04:04

I have a sainsburys delivery every week and a fruit and veg delivery every week.
I am healthy etc....
On my deliveries I take orders for 4 lots of elderly friends too.
So, no I don't feel guilty at all.

Baaaahhhhh · 07/04/2020 10:39

I have seen lots of people on my FB complaining they are "vulnerable" but haven't got slots. In reality there are very, very, few people who are in the "extremely" vulnerable group. Those that are will have got a letter, and received a government box, and will probably have a slot. The next category down is "just" the more vulnerable than average which includes anybody else with a medical issue and/or everyone else over 70. That is the biggest group, and no way can the collective supermarkets ever cover everyone in this group. It is a numerical impossibility.

zonkin · 07/04/2020 10:51

@Amotherof6 exactly. Everyone seems to be able to "justify" their behaviour because they are exceptional.

It's annoying when people try to excuse their behaviour. I don't have a problem with people saying I'm selfish so I choose x. Just don't dress that up as something more than it's not.

Of course I exclude the obvious vulnerable and key worker categories

1981m · 07/04/2020 11:23

I don't feel that I am taking a slot off someone vulnerable and at risk. There are different layers of slots. Most vulnerable and elderly first, some supermarkets only deliver to them and I can't even access that. Then supermarkets who have blanked out days that I also have access too. Then once all those people are covered the third layer- anyone else. I am in that layer, I go against everyone else in the same layer and circumstances as me to get a slot. I am not pushing in and taking a slot from someone more deserving from the layers above me. I got lucky and got a slot from the everyone else category. Yeah, lucky me. I am not going to feel guilty about that.

Of course, if they need to increase the number of slots for the first two layers then they should, of course if I was asked to actively give up my slot for someone in the first two layers I would I am not being selfish, I am booking a delivery slot in the everyone else category that I am within my right to book. If I didn't book it someone else in the exact sand situation as me would book it.

1981m · 07/04/2020 11:24

Should read- have blanked out days I have no access too.

ColourMyDreams · 07/04/2020 11:55

I still have my weekly delivery which is usually heavy or bulky stuff. Why should I give it up.
I'm at work literally 7 days a week and it's convenient for me.
I call at the supermarket 2-3 times a week after work for fresh produce.
I don't feel guilty in the least.

bridgetreilly · 07/04/2020 12:03

I call at the supermarket 2-3 times a week after work for fresh produce.

Please stop doing that so often.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/04/2020 12:18

@ColourMyDreams
and it's convenient for me. Why should I give it up.
So people don’t die for your convenience. You are able to go the supermarket after work.
This pandemic has shown the extremes of people characters, those who are risking their lives as frontline key workers and those who risk others lives.

1981m · 07/04/2020 12:23

You could argue she's risking others lives by going to the supermarket, especially 2-3 times a week.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 07/04/2020 12:30

Last time I checked Corona virus doesn't discriminate. If somebody wants to protect themselves and their family's from it then that's their prerogative.

Someone saying but I'm vulnerable and I don't want to get it is no less selfish than someone saying I don't want it.

Everyone selfishly wants to protect themselves.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/04/2020 12:32

Yes I agree 2-3 times a week is putting others at risk. Take a back pack to work, or even a suitcase on wheels if there is room to store it.
Change your shopping habits so your meals consist of lighter ingredients.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/04/2020 12:35

@drunkyhumptydumpty you are wrong, healthy people have died but statistically, vulnerable people are far more likely to die.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 07/04/2020 12:38

Then I'm not wrong.
Healthy people can die. So I selfishly want to make sure that someone who I love in my household is not in that statistic.

And somebody in a higher statistic selfishly doesn't want their household to fall into the category.

Doesn't matter who's more likely. The reason is the same. It's selfishly not wanting your household to die.

Healthy people can die from it. That's not something I am willing to throw the dice on.
So until I can not do it anymore I will kept getting it delivered.

And I'm not going to come up with some limp excuse. We have a car. We are all furloughed. We are healthy.
Still not something I want to risk.

Bouncebacker · 07/04/2020 12:40

There isn’t a shortage of delivery slots here

Pandoraslastchance · 07/04/2020 12:54

I'm still waiting for a slot for online shopping.

I'm in the shielding group due to breast cancer treatment and heart failure. I've got a 12 week stay at home letter. I'm registered with sainsburys etc and the gov website but it means fuck all. Ive sat up until midnight most nights refreshing the page and checking for a slot but zilch.

I'm so tired and the stress from worrying about feeding my children is making me ill.

Which child should I sacrifice to get a slot? (Jk)

FourTeaFallOut · 07/04/2020 14:29

Those that are will have got a letter, and received a government box, and will probably have a slot.

It's just not that simple. A Boris box won't help me. They're not built with a bunch of kids in mind. And the slots didn't just open up for us either although I'm hopeful that they will do eventually. If you are going to take the slots regardless at least have the good grace not to make stuff up.

JoeySpecial · 07/04/2020 14:31

I am healthy. Have a car.

I have a delivery slot. I always have had one.

Won't be giving it up either. We are self isolating this week due to a cough so what would we have done for food shopping if we didn't have a slot?

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/04/2020 14:31

The boxes only provide enough food for the person shielding not for other family members.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/04/2020 14:34

@Pandoraslastchance have you used the same email address with Sainsbury’s and the government? Also register with Asda and Tesco they both offered me slots. Asda were amazing free priority pass, free recurring weekly slot and free delivery. Took just over a week after registering. No slots appeared on Sainsbury’s I think because they are prioritising the elderly and Asda /Tesco’s are not.

Carbosug · 07/04/2020 14:35

If it wasn't so serious it would actually be amusing to witness how some posters on here are justifying their selfishness.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/04/2020 14:41

@drunkyhumptydumpty of course you are selfish as a healthy person you are more likely to die from any number of things than cornavirus.
You would be happy with someone who is more likely that not to die from Coronavirus virus than to live , to catch it rather than yourself or a family member with a 99.5% percent chance of survival.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 07/04/2020 14:44

I am not willing to gamble mine or my families life on a virus that could be advancing.

My child dies you might see it on the news. Feel a bit sad and forget about it the next day.

However. My entire lie is destroyed.

1981m · 07/04/2020 14:47

Exactly drunky- I choose not to put myself or my family at a bigger risk than we need, so avoid shops where possible by getting a delivery or click and collect.

A bunch of people on the internet calling me selfish isn't going to make me put my loved ones at risk. People don't have the moral high ground to tell others what to do in this circumstance. I am not breaking any laws, I am taking a block and collect slot meant for people like me.
