AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

@ncks

That’s not entirely true, a couple weeks ago I received the stay at home for 12 weeks letter, I was a bit Hmm as I didn’t think I fit into the category the government considered most at risk, I then asked my GP why I received it, he said the only thing he can think is the fact the NhS database picked up on my blood pressure issues and my BMI.

I’m glad I have the slots now as I was going to be super screwed by the end of this week if I didn’t as I actually have CV albeit mild symptoms and been dealing with it for 2 weeks now and I have no one to help with shopping etc ( I’m not even going to tell you about the absolute shit show with trying to get my regular meds from my local boots)

I received my box last week ( for some odd reason I got two but one was literally just orange squash, butter, biscuits and chocolate) and most of it is finished now but it was an absolute god send.

@Carbosug If you think people are selfish- are you offering to takke care of families who lose supposedly healthy people to the illness? We keep on saying anyone can die from it, and then when people want to stay home, you shame them that they do. "Be kind", huh...

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 17:01

@MonaLisadoesntsmile

I've no idea what that question has to do with the point I'm making. But no I haven't because I'm looking after my elderly mother who has cancer, and am isolating as much as possible.

zonkin · 06/04/2020 18:16

All of the supermarkets are businesses not charities. Profit for their shareholders is their primary purpose. They will be thinking about their future custom. Ocado, Waitrose, M&S etc know that those who are vulnerable and on a low budget will not be future customers. And that most of their existing customers will continue to use their services regardless. Yes a few will stop using them because they are upset about this situation, but most won't. That's the harsh reality.

zonkin · 06/04/2020 18:20

@Carbosug But who will "police" the delivery slots?

And looking at most of the threads on CV-19 most people seem to have a reason that means they don't have to conform to not having to give up their delivery slots/not going out/and so on.

orangejuicer · 06/04/2020 18:35

What about click and collect slots? What does the MN jury say about those?

mooboy · 06/04/2020 19:11

If the Supermarkets don't want to hold back more spots for the vulnerable maybe the Gov should be heavily encouraging them to do so. I'd happily give up my spot if I knew it was going to someone more deserving but that's not the way it works.

Amotherof6 · 06/04/2020 19:13

There is no list for the supermarkets to follow for vulnerable and shielding... that's a myth. We have 2 letters for the 12 week stay at home but no priority for a space.
Frankly reading some of these comments I can see why people cannot get slots!

It's sad but shows up the selfishness in society also echoed in the crowds at various places at the weekend.
I really feel for the ones who have no-one to shop for them. They will venture out and some of them will die... but hey ho hang onto your slots fit and healthy because... you paid for them/cannot guaranteed they will go to someone in the shielding group/booked them up ages ago so will use them/or all the other 'reasons' people give to use them rather than step back and let some of the very vulnerable in society - elderly or ill etc use them.

Society!

Amotherof6 · 06/04/2020 19:14

Most don't appear to need a reason
quote "And looking at most of the threads on CV-19 most people seem to have a reason that means they don't have to conform to not having to give up their delivery slots/not going out/and so on."

Frankly, I don't think many people actually give a damn or care at all.
I'm alright Jack appears rampant

wibblewobblejiggle · 06/04/2020 19:15

Thank you. I will.

And my 'reason' is I don't want CV. Which I think is a pretty good 'reason'

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 19:25

Well no it's not @wibblewobblejiggle

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 19:27

It's a reason to think to hell with everyone else, this is every man for themself. So hope you'll tell your childten/grandchildren that's what you did during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Femail · 06/04/2020 19:28

I have a delivery slot every week and have done for a good while. I'm a key worker and healthy and I dont have a car so wont give up my slot. But I do add a few neighbours items they need on there so it's all good

wibblewobblejiggle · 06/04/2020 19:35

@Carbosug I will be telling them I protected them and followed Government advice.

You're speaking as though I'm doing something wrong. I'm not.

mastertomsmum · 06/04/2020 19:42

Delivery slots are very hard to get. Being classed officially as being in a vulnerable group is quite rare, if you follow the government link you might discover you are not so Sainsbury’s won’t give a slot out here fir example. All the best to anyone who gets one. My neighbours did - 4 kids and 2 adults. I’m shopping local myself but there are only 3 in our household

nellythenarwhal · 06/04/2020 19:44

@Carsbourg My slots are the leftover slots for anybody not elderly and vulnerable. Not everyone who needs a slot is covered by the government list.

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 19:51

Exactly @nellythenarwhal. So if you need that slot I'm so glad that you got one. I'm in Ireland. No list of vulnerable here. Every time I go into a shop I'm petrified I will end up infecti9my 85 year old mother who has cancer. But no slots available here.

thesedaysarescary · 06/04/2020 19:52

I'm working full time(50 hours a week) out of my home have 4 children and am a single parent and have 3 underlying health conditions. I can't stop work as I would not be paid. I don't drive and I have a reoccurring delivery slot as I have for years. I will not be giving up my slot. If that makes me selfish so be it.

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 19:53

@wibblewobblejiggle no you're not breaking any laws.

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 19:55

@thesedaysarescarey I honestly don't think anyone on this thread has suggested you shouldn't have a slot. In fact, posters are sticking up for the many people like you who cannot get a slot.

ims0rrydarlingg · 06/04/2020 20:00

YABU.

I'm a key worker - private healthcare.
I have literally no time to go shopping for essentials since this crisis occurred.

I'm healthy but with the hours I've been working the last 2/3 weeks, I'm having to rely on a delivery slot for the first time in my life.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/04/2020 20:06

I'm shielding. I don't get priority slots. Ocado doesn't deliver here, Sainsbury's aren't taking new customers, no sign of Tesco offering slots to the extremely vulnerable yet and we're scrapping it out for slots with people who couldn't possibly ask their DH to pick up food on the way home, or healthy cowards or people who can't be arsed to walk. Thanks a bunch, fuckers.

fizzybootlace · 06/04/2020 20:08

Anyone just watch the programme on BBC1? Maybe take a minute to be really sure you can't spare a delivery slot. Please don't believe that being on the government's list is enough to guarantee a delivery. It's really not working like that, and extremely vulnerable people aren't even on that list. Thank you.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/04/2020 23:00

no sign of Tesco offering slots to the extremely vulnerable @FourTeaFallOut I did not get an email from Tesco but where it normally says flexi slots underneath one hours slots it said “priority slots available for you to book”. So keep trying you must be registered with the same email as the government has for you. Asda also gave me a free priority pass , free delivery and a free recurring slot ( once I manage to book my first slot)

mooboy · 06/04/2020 23:05

Please don't believe that being on the government's list is enough to guarantee a delivery. It's really not working like that, and extremely vulnerable people aren't even on that list. This is something the Government need to sort out - the supermarkets need to set aside more slots for the vulnerable and if they aren't doing it by choice they need to be pressurised - they are making a fortune from the crisis - they should be giving back. There's no evidence to suggest that giving up your slot will mean a more vulnerable person will get it - the supermarkets must remove the slots required.
