Kardashians and Beckhams

itwasadarkandstormy · 05/04/2020 23:24

does anyone actually give a flying fuck about these people at this horrific time? Kim Kardashian posting pictures of herself draped over the sand on some hidden beach and Victoria Beckham filming herself calling nurses with a rallying cheer?

Come on, there are an unprecedented amount of deaths and human tragedy, yet you are cashing in on your 'brand'? For me, it is the height of distaste. They need to fuck off immediately

They could buy key workers protective masks and gloves. Imagine how much they could provide by what they will spend on a couple of days holiday.

Iamthewombat · 05/04/2020 23:29

It shows those people’s insatiable thirst for publicity. Without it,they don’t really exist, do they? Their entire lives are geared around it.

I expect ol’ Brooklyn will do some grief tourism in a week or so. The the son who wants to be a pop star will release a charity record. Then both crass families will announce the donation they have just made to a charity, because charitable giving isn’t worth doing unless you’re showing off about it, is it?

That was one of the nice things that came out about George Michael after he died. He gave loads to charity, quietly. He wasn’t making a big song and dance about it so people would have to say, “Oh, aren’t you MARVELLOUS, you’re so CHARITABLE and SELFLESS” whilst he simpered. Fat chance of the Beckhams or the Kardashians being so modest and discreet.

Smellbellina · 05/04/2020 23:32

I quite enjoy a bit of mindless celebrity browsing at night, helps me sleep at the mo

Sparklesocks · 05/04/2020 23:39

Best to unfollow/‘hide’ their content if you’re not a fan. It’s not for everyone but celebrity culture is still heavily consumed even if times of crisis, so there will still be people actively engaging with their content.

Chillicheese123 · 05/04/2020 23:42

Tbf Kim has mostly just been posting about her new justice project tv show
She’s done one post about using lockdown to learn new hairstyles for her daughters (mixed race hair) and about going looking for frogs in the garden. Not seen anything too inflammatory from her tbh

BackforGood · 05/04/2020 23:49

YABU, because, in order to come across these stories, you are obviously reading the type of media that bothers to promote it. You have opted in.
Prior to this post, I know nothing about what any of these people are doing, as the news outlets I follow don't give them the airtime or space.

If you are interested in following "celebs", then I presume it is interesting.
If you aren't, then it doesn't reach your attention unless someone posts about it on MN

itwasadarkandstormy · 06/04/2020 00:39

back interesting take - I've seen the content in various media outlets, but I'm in the US where its hard to disengage from that crap.

wombat those were my thoughts - thank you for articulating them properly

Iamthewombat · 06/04/2020 12:15

@itwasadarkandstormy the Beckhams have not disappointed. On my MSN news feed today I saw two ‘here I am, attention seeking and trying to seem relevant’ stories.

The first showed posh and one of the sons - the one who is pretending to be a pop star, not the one pretending to be a model or the one pretending to be a photographer - ‘trying out awesome new hairstyles during lockdown’.

The second shows posh ‘FaceTiming NHS staff in Manchester to thank them for their hard work’. With the associated publicity of course. I can’t begin to articulate how wrong this is on so many levels - acting like the prime minister, assuming that the NHS staff will be inspired by her, cravenly using a health crisis to get publicity for herself.

Purpletigers · 06/04/2020 13:04

Anyone who gives a flying fuck about people like them at any time ( never mind now ) is probably as shallow as they are . Wouldn’t it be wonderful , when this is all over , if all the wealthy , untalented wastes of space just disappeared from our media . Wishful thinking I should imagine .
Posh phoning the nurses? Wow she really has a huge ego !
Hopefully similar “ celebs” will be sitting at home realising they really do not contribute anything positive to the world .

FudgeBrownie2019 · 06/04/2020 13:45

It's really opened my eyes to how vacuous the whole celebrity, film star, pop star world is (and I don't follow or take much notice - but they pop up in news outlets frequently); they contribute nothing of note when it comes to a crisis like this, yet still desperately shine the light on themselves to ensure they're still talked about and relevant.

It will be interesting at the end of this crisis to see if we change our attitudes towards celebrities.

Iamthewombat · 06/04/2020 13:51

Helen Fielding (who wrote the Bridget Jones books) nailed the horrendous attention-seeking and opportunism of celebrities during crises in her book ‘Cause Celeb’ 25 years ago. I see that some things don’t change!

BTW on lunchtime foray to supermarket, I noticed that Heat magazine are offering is an insight into ‘The Beckhams’ luxury lockdown’ with many photos. Talk about a tin ear!

C130 · 06/04/2020 13:52

I find the whole celebrity culture so tacky and vapid. I hope that there is a change in the way that the celebrities are held up in society.

Gingertam · 06/04/2020 14:10

I'm always amazed how people like the Beckhams put every bit of their life online. Their children have been shoved into the spotlight from day one. I hope when this is all over people realise what is important, but I expect they will still have their followers. No idea why. I'm even more amazed when people follow their talentless offspring.

AlphaIndigo · 06/04/2020 14:19

YABU.
I have no interest in what they are doing but there will be people who don't watch the news, and who follow celebrities religiously. If these celebrities are social distancing, promoting the NHS, the stay at home message and manage to reach at least one more person it doesn't bother me at all and can only be a good thing.

Iamthewombat · 06/04/2020 14:21

If these celebrities are...promoting the NHS

I’d say that the thing the NHS needs least at the moment is PR!

SoftBlocks · 06/04/2020 14:24

They could buy key workers protective masks and gloves. Imagine how much they could provide by what they will spend on a couple of days holiday.

This.

AlphaIndigo · 06/04/2020 14:27

@Iamthewombat Bad use of phrasing perhaps but maybe 'awareness' for things like the NHS volunteer responder scheme.
I've not read what any of them are doing but I really can't see why it would be a problem?

morecoffeerequired · 06/04/2020 14:33

They could buy keyworkers protective masks and gloves

Oh yes... where from?

okiedokieme · 06/04/2020 14:33

Whilst I am personally not bothered at all about what celebs do or don't do, I actually think the nurses getting the call from Victoria Beckham may have been boosted by the fact she called them, they are doing an amazing job, nobody can really help them (even getting extra equipment is hard because of supply problems) so someone ringing to say thank you is a good thing. None of us know if these "famous" people are doing things behind the scene like giving money. If we didn't report on such things there would be no story after all

user12345796 · 06/04/2020 14:43

They wouldn't have even had time to answer the phone and if she knew anything about nursing she wouldn't have wasted their time with her stupid calls.

Fluffybutter · 06/04/2020 14:44

Cannot stand these kinds of celebrities.
Pointless

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 06/04/2020 15:15

YABU, because, in order to come across these stories, you are obviously reading the type of media that bothers to promote it. You have opted in

Exactly - it's like the IG threads on here. People whinging about "pointless" influencers but still know/watch the ins and outs of everything they do.
I didn't even know they'd been "draping themselves over sand" for example.
Step away if they annoy you?
No-one's forcing you to read about them.
As somebody said upthread - if they're sticking to social distancing rules etc, what the hell does it matter?

Isawamagpie · 06/04/2020 15:21

I'd love to know who actually buys into these brands/people, I certainly dont know anyone. Particularly the Kardashians, what have they even ever done? Why is anyone interested in them? If anyone reading this supports thier "brand" please can you explain what makes them interesting to you? I'm genuinely at a loss!

Rezie · 06/04/2020 15:38

They could buy key workers protective masks and gloves
The issue is not lack of money, it's availability.

I don't know. Is it really different from regular people posting about their lives? I'm not a fan of the self isolation messages when they are on their private islands. But Kim K's pic is advertising her products like many other companies.

Satansgourd · 06/04/2020 16:11

wotcha - I never said I was opting in. I don’t follow them - or anyone for that matter - on Instagram. But where I am opting out is not an issue. I don’t care what they are doing, that is the point. It’s the self promotion at this specific time I object to
