Feeling guilty and selfish over shopping

I am elderly and live in sheltered housing. I have some health conditions which mean Covid 19 would be risky for me.

In our village, a group has been set up where people volunteer to get our shopping. I am very grateful for this.

My volunteer sent me a message on Facebook and asked what I needed, so I thanked her and gave her a list (about ten items).

Then she sent another message saying she felt I was asking for too much, and that she could only go once a week.

I was terribly upset by this. The woman who organised things also sent me a message asking me only to use the service once a week, and as an emergency.

Now I feel really guilty and selfish, and I will just go to the shops myself, I think.

Delighted for you. I cannot believe the way you were treated.

Aw, great news!! Xxx

Your post made me cry 😢 I wish you lived near me so I could do your shopping. I’m sorry that about the way that “volunteer” responded to you 😐 and I feel sad that you were upset. Your shopping list is perfectly reasonable and I’m glad you have got another volunteer to help and a Tesco’s delivery slot. Best wishes 💐

Starbucksbasic123 · 06/04/2020 01:09

I’m so sorry this has upset you. Your list is reasonable and easy, no bother at all. Don’t feel upset this pandemic is making people behave in a peculiar way at times. Don’t worry xx

Glad you got a delivery booked. It must be so hard for people who are vulnerable and living alone.

I don't know much about sheltered housing but I thought it had wardens. If that's true, can they not help by bringing you a pint of milk at least in a pinch?

Lynda07 · 06/04/2020 01:28

Excellent that you have a Tesco slot, ClapforCats. Put this unpleasant experience behind you. People are so weird - but you're not.

Good God that list is minimal the least anyone could do for a lady who's given so many if her years to help so many as a nurse. Please do not cry maybe ring up your local council as I'm sure there's other volunteers out there who would be glad to help you out Thanks

YouTheCat · 06/04/2020 08:56

I'm not doing 'Clap for Cats'. I'm doing a cat biscuit shake and saying 'pss pss'. I asked my cat's opinion and this is what she would prefer.

Also yay for Tesco. Hope you put some gin on there.

ZooeyS · 06/04/2020 09:07

The volunteer is being an idiot, you have nothing to feel bad about. Both me and my husband are doing lots of shopping, picking up prescriptions etc for older or vulnerable neighbours and a ten item list is really not unusual.

Unlike my incredibly frustrating father in law who likes bread from shop a, ham from shop b, a particular coffee but only if it's on special offer etc etc.

BringMeTea · 06/04/2020 09:10

Super news! Have a lovely day.

YangShanPo · 06/04/2020 09:40

I'm pretty sure cats assume all the clapping is for them anyway.

Whilst looking pissed off about itGrin

Glad you got your delivery slot OP.

LuluJakey1 · 06/04/2020 09:51

Excellent news? Treat yourself to some Gin

HermioneWeasley · 06/04/2020 09:55

Great news re a delivery a lot. Your “volunteer” was being an absolute bellend. Take care

Scarlettpixie · 06/04/2020 10:14

So pleased you have a delivery slot! Your first volunteer was being rediculous. 10 items is hardly a weekly shop. Hopefully you can stock up a bit with your Tesco delivery. Don’t forget you can amend your order up to the night before.

ClapForCats · 06/04/2020 14:29

Thank you, everyone.

Yes, we have a warden in the sheltered housing, but she doesn't live on site and is only around for two hours, Mon - Fri.

Since lockdown started she has worked from home and phones us, as she is not allowed to enter our homes.

Our warden lives eighteen miles away. In an emergency she would contact the relevant service for us. We do have cords to pull if we need to.

I am so glad I got my Tesco slot, though. The cats think this is because I supported someone's suggestion that Clapping for Cats was vital. They think anything positive which happens in my life is because of them, as all cats do.

That’s good the warden phones. Hope you’re not feeling lonely too lonely not having her there or being able to mingle with the other residents? Great you have your cats for company!

Brefugee · 06/04/2020 14:54

@LuluJakey1 I love your MIL's list. (that's not much tonic for a whole bottle of gin, though!)

and now I'm craving Sage Derby cheese and no chance of getting any
