Leo Varadkar the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland has re-registered as a medical doctor and is going to join the ranks of the HSE (healthcare system) to care for Covid patients.

He will do 1 shift per with as well as well... leading the country through this shit-storm.

I’m quite surprised, and pleased for many reasons - but THIS is leadership - wow!!

I admire him for this

Slomi · 05/04/2020 18:54

Himself and Simon Harris are playing a blinder. And Dr. Tony Holohan has been absolutely fantastic.

BigBairyHollocks · 05/04/2020 18:55

I have to say I’m pretty impressed too.Not often you see leaders really walking the talk-but fair play, he’s showing that he really is prepared to do his bit.

AltoClef · 05/04/2020 18:57

Yes, I agree, great example of leadership.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 05/04/2020 18:58

Our local MP is going back to her roots and joining the nursing force.

Good on them.

cardibach · 05/04/2020 18:58

Excellent. I feel the same about Rosena Allin-Khan

Alsohuman · 05/04/2020 18:59

It’s definitely leading from the front. Hats off to them all.

Zogsbigsister · 05/04/2020 19:02

Good for him, I have read that he’ll be doing telephone consultations though rather than on the frontline.

Yesterdayforgotten · 05/04/2020 19:02

Imagine boris doing that... Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2020 19:02

Good for your Taoiseach Star
Sharing some risks with frontline staff

He's played a blinder throughout this crisis
Some inspiring speeches too

Well done too to MP Rosena Allin-Khan in the UK Star who is also working shifts as a doctor

CilantroChili · 05/04/2020 19:03

The ever-present cynic in me says chapeau! but I must admit I’m impressed

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2020 19:04

Hopefully the patients won't be too flustered to talk to him properly ! Grin

Yesterdayforgotten · 05/04/2020 19:04

Not a qualified doctor but even so...

rubberoftheband · 05/04/2020 19:07

@Yesterdayforgotten Leo was a GP, am I missing something?

Hannah021 · 05/04/2020 19:12

Honourable move... The health system im sure is still able to cope as things havent peaked yet. Once shortage of staff becomes a problem, i'd expect them all to drop part time work and focus on helping the health system.

tazzy73 · 05/04/2020 19:14

I think the cynic in me thinks this is a PR stunt. I hope not.

As far as I have seen he will be doing online consultations. To be honest I would prefer to see him in a hospital, on the front line and there he will see first hand what is needed in the hospitals.

Tazzy.

QuestionMarkNow · 05/04/2020 19:14

I think his heart is at the right place
I think he is wrong to do that because the county needs him more. As a really good PM than a doctor. And he won’t be able to if he is ill or working on others things than being a PM

midsomermurderess · 05/04/2020 19:15

Good for him.

LetTheCabbagesDie · 05/04/2020 19:16

Good on him. Shows leadership to the doctors and nurses, he isn't asking them to do anything he wouldn't himself.

Deadringer · 05/04/2020 19:16

Unqualified? He worked as a dr for seven years according to the times.

handbagsatdawn33 · 05/04/2020 19:19

For a moment, I thought some fecking eejit was referring to BoJo...

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 05/04/2020 19:19

yesterdayforgotten

He is a fully qualified doctor.

Mr Varadkar studied medicine and worked as a doctor for seven years before leaving the profession for politics. He was removed from the medical register in 201

I'd say it probably is, but who cares? It's the right thing to do!

MissMarks · 05/04/2020 19:23

I think it is fab! Well done Leo
