Leo Varadkar the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland has re-registered as a medical doctor and is going to join the ranks of the HSE (healthcare system) to care for Covid patients.

He will do 1 shift per with as well as well... leading the country through this shit-storm.

I’m quite surprised, and pleased for many reasons - but THIS is leadership - wow!!

Imagine boris doing that.

Well as he is a journalist I am glad he isn't. But I thought we were beyond trying to score political points - so mmuch for a refreshed Labour party.

Spidey66 · 05/04/2020 22:04

Good on him! Maybe he’ll treat BoJo who’s been admitted to hospital?

Yesterdayforgotten · 05/04/2020 22:07

@DrinkSangriaInThePark my comment was linked to Bojo. I better not mention his name again as it is getting people's backs up on here as it is... right getting my coat

rayoflightboy · 05/04/2020 22:40

Good on him! Maybe he’ll treat BoJo who’s been admitted to hospital?
Unless Boris is in an Irish hospital,he hasn't a hope of that.
Fair balls to Leo,he's really stepped up.Clear, concise no bs attitude.Good on him.

Anne8850 · 06/04/2020 01:03

@Ponoka7 I presume you mean Boris?

Leo is in Ireland where we have the HSE not the NHS

AlexCrowe84 · 06/04/2020 01:36

Please could someone tell me how I'd say Taoiseach, phonetically? I've seen it written so many times but never heard the word pronounced orally before and I know being an Irish word, my internal voice is incorrect...

Rdoo · 06/04/2020 01:42

Alex

it's "T-Shock".
Or sometimes "T-Shuck" depending on the Irish accent saying it.

And fair play to Leo, doing a great job.

AlexCrowe84 · 06/04/2020 01:43

Rdoo
Thanks so much 👍

Reginabambina · 06/04/2020 01:51

My first thought was that it was cheap and neglectful. But then I reconsidered. I think it would be beneficial to have a perspective of what’s going on on the ground and while the PM isn’t the ideal person to do this it’s not like any other government ministers have the qualifications.

Iwannabeadored20 · 06/04/2020 02:04

There have been a lot of Taoiseachs historically who trained in the professions and often retained their former professional status, haven't there? Wasn't Enda Kenny a teacher? Mary Hanafin (not Taoiseach and can't remember her role now).

Isn't it seen as a good thing in Ireland that the political representatives have first-hand experience in the coal face?

Iwannabeadored20 · 06/04/2020 02:04

at the coal face

Stickybeaksid · 06/04/2020 07:56

At least Leo is doing a good job as caretaker. Imagine Mary Lou was in charge during this situation!!!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 06/04/2020 10:57

My first thought was that it was cheap and neglectful.

How so? I think it will be really good that he will be talking and listening to members of the public, who will be terrified and ill. It will keep him grounded and realistic about the impact this is having on ordinary people. Unlike most political leaders, who would nod sympathetically in front of the cameras, or in BoJo’s case, shake their hands 🙄, then go back to their ivory towers.

EmeraldShamrock · 06/04/2020 11:06

Dr. Tony Holohan has been absolutely fantastic No he will never redeem himself for what he did to the women of Ireland. Cervical Scandal? He is a prick.
Leo Varadakar and Harris are doing a great job.

EmeraldShamrock · 06/04/2020 18:01

We are all Flushirts now I don't get it. Can someone tell me what it means.

AutumnLeavesSeptember · 06/04/2020 18:08

YANBU! Jealous. Hope the next coalition includes him.

EmeraldShamrock · 06/04/2020 18:24

I don't think Leo Varadkar will have any problems in the next election, he has shone.
People were feed up around the elections as the country was neglected for to long with all the Brexit fiasco not Leo Vadadkar's fault, personally I think he dealt with Brexit very well.

Disquieted1 · 06/04/2020 18:41

Maybe as PM his time would be better spent finding ways to free up a billion euros to get 10,000 doctors and nurses out of retirement. Or ensuring that as much R&D funding as possible is directed towards developing a vaccine. Or a million other things that a Prime Mortgage could be doing.

Disquieted1 · 06/04/2020 18:43

Mortgage = Minister
