Woman walked out of Tesco in front of me carrying 2 cucumbers only! Wtf?

OP posts:
Knowhowufeel2 · 05/04/2020 19:43

Before I came down with Covid-19, I went shopping to my local Tesco. It was about 9am and I had a list of about 26 items to get, which I consider essential for my family.

I came out with only 2 items (1×milk and 1×cooked chicken pieces)
because everything else on my list was out of stock.

Does that mean my shop wasn't essential??

They had more milk left, but not loads & I didn't want to deprive someone else, so I only took one as that would do us for a few days.

My list consisted of:

milk ×2,
cucumber ×2,
red peppers ×3,
lettuce,
tomatoes,
2 fresh meat items, (eg, chicken, pork, sausages) cheese,
butter,
cooked chicken for the (poorly) dog,
bagels,
paracetamol,
ibuprofen,
bananas,
apples,
sparkling water,
mushrooms,
avocado,
spinach,
broccoli,
carrots

cauliflower
Rosé wine

I don't have a crystal ball, otherwise I probably would've stayed at home.

Instead of judging others, look to your own behaviour, as that's all you can control.

baroqueandblue · 05/04/2020 19:43

@ThatFriendsReunion you're far too fond of throwing the word stupid at people. It's offensive, and you'll convert no-one to your cause that way.

As many PPs have pointed out, the OP wasn't in a position to make a value judgment because she knew absolutely nothing about why the shopper in front of her was buying those goods. How you fail to miss that important point and go straight to accusing people like me of abusing NHS staff says everything about your own prejudices and agenda.

Get over yourself Biscuit

Chillyourbeans · 05/04/2020 19:45

Some folk have waited all their lives for this, haven't they? Shall we make you a badge OP? Has anyone considered that the hysteria that even exists regarding people who are following the guidelines might be winding up the less compliant among us and fuelling their fuck it attitude?

Stefoscope · 05/04/2020 19:48

Why do people assume to know so much about other people's circumstances and lifestyle? I keep a chest freezer full of a couple of months worth frozen veg and meat, have done so for the past year so no I didn't panic buy, I just hate food shopping. I''ve basically been living off that so haven't needed to go shopping for myself. I do however have pets who need fresh salad and veg buying every week to supplement what I'm home growing for them. Am I allowed to go shopping just for salad and perhaps a bottle of wine once every 10 days? Literally 5 minutes in and out and keeping 2 metres away from people. I'm capable of looking with my eyes and not my hands, do I need a permission slip sir? Grin.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 05/04/2020 19:48

God I'm sick of this pedantic policing of people's buying habits. I went to Asda pharmacy act for a prescription and left with a 6 pack of Coca Cola. Sorry that I'm not surviving on tap water I didn't realise it was the martyr olympics 🙄

bellinisurge · 05/04/2020 19:49

When I was pregnant and suffering from hyperemesis, all I could stomach, after first being hospitalised, was cucumber and lettuce. Or maybe she just wants some fucking cucumber. Mind your own business.

BridgeFarmKefir · 05/04/2020 19:50

You could say this about literally anything. Are tomatoes essential? Crumpets? Mint? Coffee? Why is anyone buying meat? It's not essential. Chickpeas? Use something else.

Fucking hell. The curtain twitchers are having a field day.

ilovesushi · 05/04/2020 19:52

For gin and tonic obviously.

Sapphiresunrise · 05/04/2020 19:53

No, only gruel and water are essential items until further notice.

Willow2017 · 05/04/2020 19:54

We're not in a Victorian prison expected to live on bread and water and gruel!

Oh but you are wrong!

According to some posters bread and milk is not essential in any household across the UK.
So its water and gruel for you from now on...

Scrumbleton · 05/04/2020 19:56

I’m totally with you OP - those who say mind your own business are clearly the selfish twats that are putting the rest of society at risk by popping out constantly for random items and consequently getting infected and spreading the disease. Do a big shop to keep your family going for as long S you can afford/ have space for. If you forget something or it’s not available fo without it. FFS STAY HOME STOP SPREADING C19

Louiselouie0890 · 05/04/2020 19:58

I've been in this situation, they didnt have what I needed so I pointlessly bought some sanitary towels as to not feel ashamed when leaving the store. It's ridiculous.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 05/04/2020 20:00

I hate to be the one to point it out but some of you are aware not everyone can afford a big food shop right now?

Chillicheese123 · 05/04/2020 20:00

My kid exists on water and dust so you’re all gluttonous wastrels if you’re buying anything at all

hauntedvagina · 05/04/2020 20:02

I've just got a couple on my online shop, the sun is shining and a Pimms wouldn't be complete without them Wink

TimeAintNothing · 05/04/2020 20:03

For the people saying you can do without milk etc. What do you recommend I give my toddler? Previously we've been told milk IS important for childrens diet. Did i miss the memo stating it no longer is?

@Shitfuckoh DS dietician told us that he has to have a specific multivitamin each day as it's the only one that contains all of the things missing from his diet and at least two glasses of milk both for the calories and the calcium. Milk is one of other essentials, luckily I don't need to shop for it very often as we get it delivered but DH did need to go get some this morning because we were running out.

If you forget something or it’s not available fo without it.

And if you have a child who will literally eat nothing if their safe foods are not available...?

TimeAintNothing · 05/04/2020 20:04

I hate to be the one to point it out but some of you are aware not everyone can afford a big food shop right now?

I pointed this out several pages ago and a certain poster laughed and asked who are thes people who can only buy/store two days of food.

CherryPavlova · 05/04/2020 20:05

In truth, it’s difficult to make a decent Number 1 without cucumber and there are only a few pleasures we can still enjoy in the sunshine.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 05/04/2020 20:07

FFS STAY HOME STOP SPREADING C19

IVE NOT LEFT THE HOUSE IN 10 FUCKING DAYS

WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU YELLING AT

h3av3n · 05/04/2020 20:07

Yes, food is essential... YABU and insane

GlummyMcGlummerson · 05/04/2020 20:10

Time Angry some people on here have never even so much as struggled to pay a single bill and it shows.

When I very first became a single mum (I fled quickly and had to use my modest savings to get started in a rental property and buy everything new as dickhead exH withheld all our money) I had several days when I had £3 in my bank account and had to shop very carefully. I am now have often thought how, if this pandemic happened then, I wouldn't know what to do.

iheartislesofwight · 05/04/2020 20:16

def essential for my guinea pigs, they'd complain otherwise Grin

HoffiCoffi13 · 05/04/2020 20:17

Wrong Scrumbleton. I haven’t entered a supermarket in a month (I’ll need to tomorrow to pick up a prescription), and I still think the OP should mind her own fucking business.

Sparklesocks · 05/04/2020 20:21

I have absolutely no time for people who think they’re important enough to pass judgement on what other people are buying. I know the busybodies and curtain twitchers are in their element at the moment because they feel their nosy nature is now justified by a sacred duty, but unless people are doing something dangerous then it’s really none of your beeswax and it’s embarrassing to think otherwise.

georgialondon · 05/04/2020 20:24

They are essential to my toddler. How can you judge which foods are or aren't essential Confused
