To ask if you earn a lot LESS than 50k per year?

On the back of another thread which was asking about £50k + earners (and me being naturally nosy!) I just wonder if there are many on here earning a lot less and wonder what you do for a living?
I’ve been on Mumsnet for years and there does seem to be many very high earners on here with some very interesting careers.
I’m not one of them unfortunately. Dh earns around £35k pa (45 hrs pw) and due to some health issues I only work very part time. We are both in everyday kind of jobs not careers but we are very happy nonetheless.
Anyone else earning an ‘average’ wage in ‘average’ jobs?

Around 20k cleaning manager in retail then an evening cleaning job for another 7k. Average 52 hours a week. Parner is a brickmason and earns about 25k plus a 1k christmas bonus.

I am a chartered tax advisor and earn £36k basic and usually bonus of around £2k. Husband is a self employed writer and earns about the same. We both work around 40 hours a week although there are a few months of the year when I am expected to do a lot of unpaid overtime.

Wolfff · 04/04/2020 14:51

Civil servant £38k (36 hours a week) with another £4K last year from part time online work (thanks to the £10 a day thread).

DH local govt on about £43k (50 hrs a week plus)

SqidgeBum · 04/04/2020 14:52

I am a teacher with a degree, a PGCE, a first in a masters, and I have 5 years teaching experience. I am in a 'career'. I earn 29k before tax.

Scruffyoak · 04/04/2020 14:54

We get about 28k combined. 4 kids. Both still working out house.

Carrie7469 · 04/04/2020 14:54

Civil service. About £27,000

YangShanPo · 04/04/2020 14:57

I work 16 hrs a week and earn £5000

Payments administrator for a very large company in the SW. 17500. Wages generally terrible in the SW, my job is no exception.
Luckily we have really expensive housing and utilities too so it's all good 😩

transformandriseup · 04/04/2020 15:00

Fte of my accounts assistant role is 20k

CoffeeRunner · 04/04/2020 15:01

NHS about £24k.

DH earns £30k in an office job.

willowpatterns · 04/04/2020 15:01

I've noticed that on MN you do get a lot of people who enjoy telling you all about their highly-paid and jolly interesting careers.

The vast majority of us ordinary-earners wouldn't even consider mentioning it unless asked.

Since you have asked, I'm part-time, but ft equivalent would be about £28k. The other three adults in my house are all currently in deep shit career-wise due to this damn virus.

SanFrancisco49er · 04/04/2020 15:03

I used to earn £40k and my husband £50 so we were ok between us. But i was stressed so dropped it back gradually. Now I'm on £16k working in admin and all school hols and weekends off. We have to watch our spending more but much happier all round.

ThyrilThneer · 04/04/2020 15:04

Civil Servant. £36,000 for 32hrs per week. I get 45% of my basic salary again for working awful shifts that will probably reduce my life expectancy by 10 years though. Swings and roundabouts!

ellanwood · 04/04/2020 15:04

I would be earning £50k+ if I worked full time. But I'm freelance and part time, so often earn only about £12k pa after tax.

DishingOutDone · 04/04/2020 15:05

Our joint income is around £42k. We both work part time for charities, 2 DC. I consider us very lucky, but I find it tricky with friends who earn considerably more like £100k+ and don't acknowledge they are doing well.

Mind you the way I feel at the moment with worries about ill health, if we all get through COVID19 alive I reckon it'll be like winning the lottery anyway to be honest Sad

I see there are a few people on here saying they earn around £50k as individuals - so that's very different if the under £50k is for the entire family!

Pinksaffire · 04/04/2020 15:05

I don’t think people are lying about earning over £50K
I earn by far the least out of our social circle and I’m on £48000. (Senior nurse)

Justincasecakehappens · 04/04/2020 15:05

I've noticed that on MN you do get a lot of people who enjoy telling you all about their highly-paid and jolly interesting careers.

why on earth wouldn't they? Do you expect people to be ashamed of a reasonably successful career? Why?

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 15:06

50k is not an unusual salary in London & I know teachers & police officers who earn that but have often been told I must be lying.

I don't think people are necessarily lying but perhaps over represented, particularly when looking at high salaries, as only 61,000 women in the UK earn 150k plus which is tiny (source FT).

I would agree that house sale prices are not necessarily an indicator of how much you earn but rather when you got on the ladder & how much equity you could build.

SuperSharpShooter · 04/04/2020 15:07

40hr week Food retail supervisor just under 13,000. Partner - night security 14,000.

GreaseRizzo · 04/04/2020 15:07

It’s what you save... not what you earn

PinkCashmereTowel · 04/04/2020 15:07

qualified family law solicitor specailising in child protection and care.

Earn £21k.

It fucks me right off when peopel assume because I am solicitor i must be earning loads.

Bluewho2 · 04/04/2020 15:08

DH is a funeral director and earns £30k basic. I'm an FT office assistant on £24k. I'd rather he earned less and had a safer job wfh right now.

TheHobbitMum · 04/04/2020 15:10

I work full time in a supermarket and earn about £27k (more if I want to work extra hours) , I'll never earn £50K+

bananafish · 04/04/2020 15:10

This must relate to geography though, no? £50k pa in London and the Southeast isn't a particularly high professional salary.

ShadowLightning · 04/04/2020 15:12

Wellbeing Facilitator - £26K pro rata (£21K actual).

Really enjoy my job but wish I had more money!
