Escorts & prostitutes losing business

OntheAgendatoo · 03/04/2020 16:38

Posting for traffic as I have a weird sense of curiosity. Has anyone wondered what is happening to people who have made the above, er, career choice? Does this mean the market will dry up?

I should think so.

Thehop · 03/04/2020 16:40

But I suppose there’s extra work on webcams.

donquixotedelamancha · 03/04/2020 16:44

I had to fight hard not to make a lube joke.

If a hooker has paid tax in the normal way then presumably they will be eligible for self employed support.

DrierThanANunsNasty · 03/04/2020 16:45

Registered workers in the sex work industry will be self employed and get support as any business would. If they’re not doing it legitimately then they won’t and that’s their own fault, but I know quite a few adult workers and they’re all well established businesses.

That's hilarious I walked right into that one :)

I suppose some sex workers will do webcam work.

Mysterian · 03/04/2020 16:58

Must be a temptation to carry on working. I wonder if fees have gone up?

goldenorbspider · 03/04/2020 16:59

I imagine for those that do it out of desperation rather than choice they will carry on. Another added risk

ghostyslovesheets · 03/04/2020 17:00

a lot of very vulnerable people will be continuing to put themselves at risk I imagine

freshchampagne · 03/04/2020 17:00

Street prostitutes will carry on.

Escorts will struggle. The escorting business has dried up considerably over the last decade and this will not help.

EasyTarget · 03/04/2020 17:02

Web cam and telephone work I suppose. In the same boat as the rest of us either have to adapt to make money or take the risk.

ShrimpyTheGnome · 03/04/2020 17:03

Maybe they'll use lemon juice instead of lube for now...

freshchampagne · 03/04/2020 17:05

Very little money in webcam work and virtually nil in telephone work now.

clareOclareO · 03/04/2020 17:05

I think that women who are prostitutes through economic necessity (whether to feed a drug habit or just to feed their kids) will continue to work even now, as will those who are coerced to e.g. as part of organised crime.

The supply is still there, but is the demand? I'd assume this has declined because people aren't away from home on business, therefore a key market has been closed off. Also people who hire prostitutes but are living with a partner will be finding it difficult to find excuses to pop out for an hour or two.

There is probably an increase in the number willing to provide home services, visiting their clients or allowing clients to visit them - regular customers will probably still find a way to make appointments.

But I think the casual spur of the moment or drunken clients will be down significantly for the time being.

PicsInRed · 03/04/2020 17:07

Yep, let's make fun of some of the most vulnerable women in our society who may now struggle to feed and house themselves and their kids.

Haw haw haw, Top Bants. Hmm

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 03/04/2020 17:10

Don't forget the pickpockets, hardly any pockets to pick these days.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 03/04/2020 17:11

The most vulnerable, the street sex workers will and are continuing. Very vulnerable as they are more likely to be addicts from chaotic backgrounds in poor mental & physical health (carrying the high risk of co-morbidities) as well as the usual risks of harm from clients and pimps. If they don’t work, they can’t feed their habits (or their children) and they are at higher risk of abuse from their pimp because they are not earning. If they can’t feed their habit then they are at risk from potentially having to undergo cold turkey detox at home. Dangerous enough without a deadly respiratory infection doing the rounds.

If they do go out and earn then they are obviously at risk of transmitting and contracting COVID and all the rest but they have money in their pocket. It’s a horrible situation.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 03/04/2020 17:14

Holbeck makes me sick. I don’t believe for one minute that the women are any safer working there than any other street in the UK. It’s just a loophole for blokes to get their exploitative jollies Angry

freshchampagne · 03/04/2020 17:16

To be totally honest, while I don’t doubt the vulnerability of street prostitutes, they are not doing it to ‘feed their kids’ - it’s to feed something, but it isn’t children.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 03/04/2020 17:18

@freshchampagne, drug addicts are humans too.

freshchampagne · 03/04/2020 17:19

Please could you point out where I said that they weren’t? Smile thank you

h3av3n · 03/04/2020 17:19

@freshchampagne that isn't true, there's plenty of money to be made from webcam work still and the whole corona thing means there's more to be made currently as there are lots more viewers

Oaksandashes · 03/04/2020 17:19

At the risk of being attacked, if anyone is genuinely interested. The agency I work for closed on Mar15th, its not a risk we could take health wise or reputation wise. Most of the Women I work with file taxes and we have a really good culture of saving in the busy times to get by in the quieter months. Because we paid taxes we can get government help.. Business has been good the last few years & I feel confident we will bounce back(insert your own joke here!). There is also help out there for others who didn't file taxes or save and my agency are a really tight group , we are helping each other out. That said its a really scary time for everyone & we are all worried how long this will continue & how much longer we will be able to keep our heads above water.

h3av3n · 03/04/2020 17:20

Umm a lot of women in prostitution are doing it to survive, feed their kids etc... Not sure where you got the idea that they're all drug addicts
