To think the talk of so many NHS clappers is mostly down and out lies?

I missed it last time but gave it the benefit of the doubt. Until Tonight. I listened closely outside at 8 and did not hear a single clap in my area. Also, on Channel 4 news it was showing people clapping and it was literally only a few people clapping, very unenthusiastically and slowly and even sarcastically, I hasten to add. I’m not saying it’s not a “thing” but to claim it’s all “up and down the country” no it’s not, loads of people don’t give a damn. I wonder at all the stories shared by MNers about entire streets coming out to clap and wonder where they live where this happens as everyone that replies seem to agree

It happened in my street, we have a WhatsApp group so those of us on it get a reminder. More people out than last week, including some new neighbours across from us - it's a nice opportunity to be able to wave and smile at people we haven't yet met, as well as giving a cheer for NHS and all those who are keeping us going.

Last week there was a good turnout on my street, but today only a couple of families. I hope this doesn't become a weekly thing. It's a lovely and moving gesture as a one off, but people do have young children and babies who need sleep, plus there are shift workers who are sleeping at 8pm.

NotJust3SmallWords · 02/04/2020 20:45

It was loud enough on my street to remind me it was happening! Nearly missed it but heard cheering so rushed out.

Yellredder · 02/04/2020 20:45

I live in a smallish village and we could hear lots of clapping!

Escapeistheonlyoption · 02/04/2020 20:46

Quieter than last week but still lots and cow bells.

I think that it is also about knowing that other people are out there and making that brief connection with them.

Our dog went out and was very bemused.

LuluJakey1 · 02/04/2020 20:47

I forgot it was happening and was walking along to SIL with some of DS2s baby clothes he has grown out of. She and BIL live at the far end of a long street- there were about 6 houses doing it at one end out of 80 houses.

RedRedScab · 02/04/2020 20:47

I listened closely outside at 8 and did not hear a single clap in my area.

Maybe clap next week and see if others follow your lead? 'Listening' doesn't have quite the same effect.

NurseButtercup · 02/04/2020 20:48

Nothing on my street but my niece reported fireworks and pots being bashed very loudly on her street

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 02/04/2020 20:48

Loud on our street: not least for the NHS worker currently in quarantine with family symptoms a few doors down. No saxophone this week though the cowbells were still around!

Wheresthebeach · 02/04/2020 20:49

Loads on our street - introduction of symbols for added noise. Actually I think its more for our benefit. Seeing each other, reminding ourselves that we are a community.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/04/2020 20:49

Happened on our street in London

NewYearNewJob123 · 02/04/2020 20:49

This is another example of people thinking if it is/isn't happening in their street then it is/isn't happening in the rest of the country. Which is just bizarre.

Loud round here and fireworks. I don't think that means the same for everywhere else.

Downton57 · 02/04/2020 20:50

The term virtue signalling infuriates me. It is so easy to throw at anyone trying to do something nice, and impossible to argue.

You don't have to join in if you don't want to, but don't sneer at those who do. Lots of NHS workers have said they really appreciate it. I know my daughter and the rest of her team do. They are having a fucking horrible time and the very least they deserve is a round of applause.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 02/04/2020 20:50

Am I the only one who finds this embarrassing? Standing on your doorstep clapping and whooping, it's all a bit too American for me.
I'm of course very grateful to the nhs but just can't bring myself to do this Blush

woollylizard · 02/04/2020 20:50

Sounded like a football stadium of applause here both times!

WaynettaIsMyStyleIcon · 02/04/2020 20:50

I was out for a walk, walking along a busy main road at 8pm. I saw one person clapping out of his window, and that was it. Fewer posts on social media about it compared with last week as well.

pearpickingporky84 · 02/04/2020 20:50

No clapping where I live but there’s only a handful of houses so it’s not surprising (I work for the NHS so I’m not going out and starting it!). My sisters and parents all report loads of clapping and cheering on their areas though!

Missteebeee · 02/04/2020 20:52

Much louder here than it was last week

TheUndo · 02/04/2020 20:53

Maybe it’s more acceptable to stand on your doorstep and randomly clap where you are all from and you have nice or reasonable neighbours that will just join in with you😊

I just bought a football horn to set off next week

My friends who work in the homeless shelters are working 60 hour work weeks in shifts and are desperate for sleep. Football horn sounds like a great idea Hmm

torthecatlady · 02/04/2020 20:55

South Wales valleys here.

We didn't clap last week as I couldn't see anyone on our street clapping and to be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I feel like it's almost more for the community than the NHS?

A neighbour text me to say she'd be out this evening so I went out and almost everyone on our street was out. An ambulance passed and cheered with their window down as they drove by. (I teared up, I definitely need to get out!)

FfsCorona · 02/04/2020 20:58

My whole street was out (Edinburgh)

LilacTree1 · 02/04/2020 21:00

It’s a thing in my block of flats

Also, sibling lives in flats in another county and they did it too.

People who were walking along the street stopped and joined in.

LilacTree1 · 02/04/2020 21:01

I do think we need a quieter way as there will be key workers trying to get some sleep between shifts. Luckily no football horns here.

JustMySize · 02/04/2020 21:01

Not much on my street but could hear loads clapping in other streets and fireworks.
