To think the talk of so many NHS clappers is mostly down and out lies?

I missed it last time but gave it the benefit of the doubt. Until Tonight. I listened closely outside at 8 and did not hear a single clap in my area. Also, on Channel 4 news it was showing people clapping and it was literally only a few people clapping, very unenthusiastically and slowly and even sarcastically, I hasten to add. I’m not saying it’s not a “thing” but to claim it’s all “up and down the country” no it’s not, loads of people don’t give a damn. I wonder at all the stories shared by MNers about entire streets coming out to clap and wonder where they live where this happens as everyone that replies seem to agree

Loads here in our small city, church bells signalled start and end, and could hear clapping and whooping for about a mile at least.

OptimisticSix · 02/04/2020 20:29

Thank goodness none in my street, I have an anxious dog! Plenty in my town though according to Facebook. Am hoping it wears off soon because dog... But its nice if its making people feel better so I'm trying not to be a miserable grump about it.

Stet · 02/04/2020 20:30

Lots out on our street tonight and a piper playing too! Ships at local harbour apparently tooting horns too, which they only usually do at Hogmanay!

Letthemysterybe · 02/04/2020 20:30

I could hear it echoing all around the valley. Lots of people out here and last week.

vanillandhoney · 02/04/2020 20:30

Everyone here was out clapping even though well over 2/3's of them voted Tory in the last election Hmm

CoronaIsComing · 02/04/2020 20:31

Our street came out and clapped and our street never do anything last week it was just me and DH 🙈 I didn’t think anyone would so I sent DS for a shower and he missed it! He’ll be out next week 😊

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/04/2020 20:31

Clapping, whatever. But fireworks, pans, bagpipes, trombones and air horns? WTF? People are aware that a lot of essential staff work shifts and desperately need their sleep, right? Plus dogs, children and people with PTSD.

You're a virtue signalling cunt if you do the loud stuff. And I have to go into work every day and have a skittish dog.

ScarlettBlaize · 02/04/2020 20:32

You're a virtue signalling cunt if you do the loud stuff.

Or indeed, any of the stuff. Bonus VSC points if you then post about it on social media.
It's quite refreshing to feel such pure hatred in this confusing time.

Tiny village here in East Anglia and I was watering the pots out the front at 8pm. Dead silence! Village is mostly populated by oldies so maybe most are tucked up in bed for the night.

1984isnow · 02/04/2020 20:33

It’s a bit like public mounting 😂

bulletjournalbilly · 02/04/2020 20:33

Loads here and fireworks! Home Counties

couchlover · 02/04/2020 20:33

Our whole estate was out this week and last. I forgot last week but could hear them from inside. Many of my friends recorded their streets and others commented on how lovely it was. I think your area is the odd one out maybe?

HatRack · 02/04/2020 20:35

I just bought a football horn to set off next week

17CherryTreeLane · 02/04/2020 20:35

Our whole street was out - we had clapping and we could hear bagpipes

Sounsociable · 02/04/2020 20:35

Most people in our road were clapping, and in surrounding streets. My sis 20 miles away reported the same and have seen many friends on fb all over the country saying the same

bananaramadramas · 02/04/2020 20:36

Loads here again.. saucepan banging, clapping, cheering.. it's nice. I'm in SE London

BasiliskStare · 02/04/2020 20:37

i am rather cross at virtue signalling - I completely accept there will be some NHS workers who don't like this thing , but could it not just generally taken as a very big Thank You - and yes it does not proscribe people from making other donations / voting etc etc. It is meant to say Thank You - well that is the spirit in which for a few minutes I do it. ( no new born babies , young children in my immediate neighbourhood so no one woken up unnecessarily ) It just might mind people to give some money to relevant charities or indeed to the NHS if possible.

EricaNernie · 02/04/2020 20:40

i missed it Sad, looked out at 8.03 and not a sound, but ds heard it

LakieLady · 02/04/2020 20:41

Much quieter than last week. There were a couple of fireworks, but nothing on the scale of last weeks'

DioneTheDiabolist · 02/04/2020 20:41

Loads out in my street again.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/04/2020 20:42

More people in our street this week than last. I could only hear some people a few doors up and the road next to ours. This week some neighbours on both sides / opposite came out.

JellyfishandShells · 02/04/2020 20:42

Louder than last week - SW London

maddening · 02/04/2020 20:42

We had lots of clapping and fireworks

MildlyMiserable · 02/04/2020 20:43

More people out on my street this week, a street with loads of rental properties and not much community spirit - still came out to support the careers and frontline staff though.

PeterFoggsTractor · 02/04/2020 20:43

Loads out in my street, someone played the last post on the trumpet and fireworks going off

The last post? God almighty....
