To ask if you earn £50K+ what do you do?

Poppi89 · 30/03/2020 18:51

I have seen a lot of posts on here where people say how much they earn and I am shocked how many people earn over £50K, so I was just wondering what it is that you do?

Also, do you think it is more important to have a high income or a job that you enjoy?

I was a freelance copywriter, specialising in B2B and investor relations. I earned that 20 years ago, for eight months work a year. And then I got old, and no one wanted to hire me. But it was the best and most interesting work ever. No two days were ever alike. I loved the intellectual cut and thrust, and not ever having to bother with beauraucrats or jobsworths.

Sotware engineer . A job that you enjoy

AuditAngel · 30/03/2020 21:01

Partner in a national accountancy firm, but internal role. £88k plus car, fuel and medical. I love it, but stressful

DH earns £16k gross. I feel a lot of pressure as he earns so little

Financial services legal and regulatory contracting

TheReelSlimShady · 30/03/2020 21:05

Easiest job description would be economist.

Used to work London, took job further North, with fair size pay cut.

But have a MUCH better quality of life (detached house, nice car etc, closer to family and friends, cheaper living standards).

QueenofallIsee · 30/03/2020 21:06

IT consultant, 100k plus bonus. I like my work and I am grateful in this climate for it to be honest (I am in finance sector and as such we are key workers)

Corporate governance. Go through phases of loving and hating my job. Working from home these last two weeks has taught me that I love the work but hate being trapped in a workplace.

lissie123 · 30/03/2020 21:08

Chartered Surveyor

TheLette · 30/03/2020 21:09

Solicitor. It was grim when I was more junior, but enjoying it now. Work is generally interesting and intellectually challenging but I am not frequently stressed or working insane hours.

In house lawyer - it's ok but dull at times

MargotSimpson · 30/03/2020 21:12

I’m a senior copywriter and love my job.

OhTheRoses · 30/03/2020 21:13

I'm an HR Director. DH is a lawyer. We love work. DH has always prioritised work, I have always put the dc first. They are grown up now. For much of my career I earnt 1/10of DH's earnings, now it's aboit half. We are old though.

Elbels · 30/03/2020 21:16

Communications manager in a bank. I really do like it most of the time and particularly at the moment.

Developmentconcern · 30/03/2020 21:17

Head of global HR - £150k + 20% bonus. Was on £35k 7ish years ago, which shows the opportunity in this field.

DH works in media on the same.

PositiveLife · 30/03/2020 21:19

IT. I'm a developer on the data side of things. I'm team lead and get reasonably well paid. I also get a bonus and pay for being on call. However, I have been significantly underpaid in previous years compared to colleagues so it's a little annoying in that sense.

I really enjoy it but it's unnecessarily stressful. I also know I'd earn a lot more as a contractor but I like the atmosphere where I work, it's good banter, close to home and they're good if the kids are ill or anything.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 30/03/2020 21:21

I'm a chartered accountant working in a specialist technical area. I am on a bit over 100k all in but prorated down for part time.

It required a load of study & exams after uni, a few hard years doing very long hours in a professional service firm but now in a much more flexible senior role in a FTSE 100 company.

A lot of people would find it dull and unglamorous. I enjoy the technical challenge, detailed analytical work and like minded colleagues - I'm in a friendly and supportive team & there's some good banter.

Sometimes it's hard. I have to stick my neck on the line for some big big numbers and be confident to give my view, regularly update my knowledge & wade through some heavy heavy paperwork.

What drives the pay is a) shortage of people capable of doing it (you need to be very numerate but also analytical, excellent reading comprehension, plus very good writing skills) b) big big amounts of money at stake (ive led projects involving hundreds of millions of pounds) so the people hiring are happy to compete on pay to attract the best staff c) niche area so people hiring (CEO/CFO) don't understand everything we do so hard to challenge us.

Most important to have a job that is fulfilling, however many people do that and earn £50k+. Good for them!

BoogleMcGroogle · 30/03/2020 21:24

I'm an educational psychologist. Previously in a specialist role and now running a small independent practice part-time. I love my job and I love being at home with my own children after school and during the holidays. However, it has been a long slog to get to this point in my career.

doadeer · 30/03/2020 21:27

Marketing manager - I'm a director of my own company, I earn over that on two days a week. I just happen to work in an affluent industry (tech) - I'm not sure I deserve what I earn to be honest. I like marketing, it's varied, creative, analytical - good mix of stuff

Wowzel · 30/03/2020 21:27

I'm a nurse (matron). I still love my job.

Samtsirch · 30/03/2020 21:28

weegiemum · 30/03/2020 21:33

I don't work for money any more as I'm disabled now.
