Starting to get annoyed at people who don't think rules apply to them

So the rules say we can go outside for 1 form of exercise a day. Yet I see so many people saying things like "but we live in the countryside and it's quiet", or "my dog is used to 3 walks a day" etc

Then there's the newer stipulation of not driving anywhere non essential. And yet I see people saying it's OK less than 10 miles, or it's OK if you're driving somewhere remote to exercise.

Why are people unable to make such a tiny miniscule sacrifice? And why do they think the rules (designed to keep everybody safe) apply to everybody else but them?

This is what the police local to me are saying.

They arrested someone the other day

Pressed the wrong button

Kept saying they arrested someone the other day. For driving out. But when challenged. They say it was for obstruction

But that due to the government legislation. They have full rights to start arresting those who go out for non essential travel. Which includes driving to exercise.

So we're you one of the ones who broke the rules when they were first set? You say now you can't go further than 1km from your house, as though you were doing it up until the point they brought in fines?

I didn't break any rules. As in the UK at the moment, Macron initially advised people to start socially distancing - I was therefore fine to drive for 5 mins and run in an isolated spot. However, some of the population felt that the rules didn't apply to them and continued going out and about all over the place and meeting up with groups of friends etc etc (any of this sound familiar?). So then they started to close the parks and lakes and popular tourist spots (again is any of this sounding familiar?) but it still wasn't having the intended impact.

So what they did was introduce much much stricter rules with fines for transgressing. I think that the "rules" here are broadly similar to the UK, but the difference here is that the message is very firmly "STAY HOME" whereas in the UK it seems to have been interpreted by some as "big long bank holiday where we all carry on behaving just as we always have"

In the same way, "essentials" seems to mean something different here i.e. make sure you have food and essential medical supplies (you can only go to your nearest supermarket) Many of the posts on MN seem to interpret it as "I will continue to expect exactly what I am used to having and if that means driving to 9 different supermarkets then I will"

There was no fresh milk in our nearest supermarket on Friday - so we have no fresh milk. There - that's it, no fresh milk.

This isn't going to be over in a couple of days. I saw the footage of the new Nightingale Hospital. Who do people think all those beds are for?

The government is sending out a letter to every household this week and a copy of it is on Facebook. In it, Boris Johnson clearly states that you can only go out for one period of exercise per day. Now, I know many of you are going to say "well that isn't the law" but it clearly is what the government is requesting that we do and not some arbitrary number that some of you accuse the "MN stasi" of having made up.

Why would the Govn be introducing this advice if not to help people to avoid the virus?
Do you seriously think they're ruining the economy, paying billions to support businesses and workers just because they want to stop your second walk of the day?

This is about protecting everyone. Limit the time you spend outside, socially distance from everyone you don't live with and wash your hands.

Hardly rocket science

Hardly rocket science

Indeed.

Sat here working, I've seen the same 3 or 4 people walk past multiple times, hardly anyone around here limiting themselves to one trip outside.

TabbyMumz · 31/03/2020 14:23

Perhaps they are doing a long walk, round the block a few times? Weve just been on a long walk, double backed part of the route, someone may have seen us twice.

PhilCornwall1 · 31/03/2020 14:28

@TabbyMumz Nah, they aren't they've been in and out of their houses. I'm not having a go about them. I'm just jealous as I'm stuck in here working (late lunch, so I am working!!) and the weather is cracking our there!!

There are two issues. One is the Corona virus emergency legislation which is the law. Separate is government guidance. Guidance doesn't match the law in many cases. Police for some naive reason are using a combination of the guidance coupled with other totally make it up as they go along. Problem they have is that if they take action against any member of the public that is in breach of guidance but not the law, then the police are acting unlawfully themselves.

Unfortunately where I live the police have been putting notices on cars stating their registration numbers are now recorded on police systems and action will be taken if seen against, along with other threats. I am hoping this is over zealous individuals as officers but unfortunately I feel in the space of days since this legislation was passed, some forces beginning to act totally unlawfully and threatening their ability to police by consent.
I was pleased to read this morning that my local force is stopping these notices...accepting people are not accepting illegally.

What none of what I have written suggests that people should be stupid and put others at risk. In some areas driving to an area is sensible if you live in a built up area
