Waveysnail · 28/03/2020 22:37

Ireland and now Northern Ireland have stated that people should only leave house for essential work and food for next two weeks. IABU to think rest UK should be following?
YANBU uk should lock down
YABU uk should NOT lock down

It’s far too early

EvilPea · 28/03/2020 22:41

No. People are struggling enough with this lockdown and you want to cut out the exercise as well?

Do it too soon and it will cause people to crack. I’ve not been out except for food as I don’t live somewhere exercise is possible.
What we have is vaguely sustainable, police have powers to push the point home now. So hopefully that will help the dicks who think it doesn’t apply.

Waveysnail · 28/03/2020 22:44

Virus is expected to peak in the next 2/3 weeks. Theory of total lockdown for two weeks is that less people will die. I think people can cope without going out for exercise for two weeks.

We can exercise here, you need to stay 2km from home but totally fine to exercise, I ran 6km today, not as long as I usually would but I didn't venture further than 2km from home and only met a handful of people along the way.

CalmdownJanet · 28/03/2020 22:46

I am in Ireland, I should have mentioned that Wink

EvilPea · 28/03/2020 22:47

I’m confused what extra your asking for then?

ny20005 · 28/03/2020 22:47

Ireland's lockdown is the same as here - only it's been specified exercise within 2km of home

StepAwayFromGoogle · 28/03/2020 22:48

YABU. We have just got out of two weeks isolation with a two year old and a five year old. We need to get out into the fresh air. As long as you maintain social distancing when exercising the risk of transmission is miniscule.

SuckingDieselFella · 28/03/2020 22:52

"Ireland and now Northern Ireland have stated that people should only leave house for essential work and food for next two weeks."

Umm, that's the same as the whole of the UK.

The difference is that in the Republic of Ireland you have to stay within 2 km of your home.

implantsandaDyson · 28/03/2020 22:56

NI measures are the same as the rest of the UK. PSNI now have the power to enforce the govt legislation.

Drbrowns · 28/03/2020 22:57

Ireland isn’t part of the Uk so the question isn’t if ‘the rest of the Uk’ should follow but ‘should the Uk follow’.

FunkyFantasticFudgeball · 28/03/2020 22:57

It's not just exercise that's different in Ireland though, all people over 70 or medically vulnerable have to stay at home, they're not to go out for any reason. Only essential workers can go to work, there are police checkpoints asking where you've come from and where you're going. Apart from essential workers going to work you're only allowed to leave home to buy food, medical supplies or exercise (within 2km of home). You're not allowed to interact socially with anyone outside of your household.

I don't think it's too soon for the UK to implement these kinds of measures, according to the WHO and ECDC it's too late.

HeIenaDove · 28/03/2020 22:59

I dont know what else people like you want OP Im already only going out for food, medication and electric top ups.

Iwannabeadored20 · 28/03/2020 23:00

I think the difference is in how literally people are taking it in in Ireland compared to the UK. There is a strong sense that everyone is taking it very seriously there and no pictures in the newspapers of joggers, etc whereas there are here.

Iwannabeadored20 · 28/03/2020 23:01

Are there Gardai checks everywhere?

HeIenaDove · 28/03/2020 23:02

Housing associations are still insisting on gas safety checks being done. The engineer will have been to several houses

WTF is the point of a lockdown when this carries on.

PickAChew · 28/03/2020 23:03

How does buying food within 2km of home work for rural people? Or have \i read that wrong?

FunkyFantasticFudgeball · 28/03/2020 23:06

Yes from today there are Garda checkpoints on roads, they're patrolling parks to make sure people are staying in their family group. Car parks to local amenities are closed, locals can still access them on foot if they live within 2km.

Also our schools and creches have been completely closed for 2 weeks now, are some still open in the UK?

Cacaca · 28/03/2020 23:06

It’s a shame for the majority of the reasonable people who can live within the new rules. The idiots who can’t are going to be the reason for a total lockdown. Where I live flocking to wooded areas that have been closed, ripping down new barriers that have been installed. Complete morons.

FunkyFantasticFudgeball · 28/03/2020 23:07

You can travel further than that to shop, collect medication or care for someone vulnerable, you're not allowed to exercise more than 2km from your home

EvilPea · 28/03/2020 23:10

I thought that’s what we had?
Letters telling the vulnerable to stay home.
Police asking you where your going and who your with.
We aren’t allowed to socialise with people outside your house.
Exercise locally

The working bit is slightly different, in its work from home if you can or your employer is expected to enable you to social 2m distance.

So what more, exactly do you want?

CalmdownJanet · 28/03/2020 23:11

You exercise within 2km of home PickAChew , we can travel for food/medicine as required, obviously making as little trips as possible.

Iwannabeadored20 it only came into effect last night at midnight, there are gardai checkpoints but we don't have the manpower for that so it will be very sporadic.

General consensus here that I have seen is everyone is happy with the measures, people know they need to stay home, we can still exercise, get food, not everything is closed but most things are, it's fine. Over 70's are cocooned and not to leave the house that of course will be hard but there are good community supports in place. The post men/women are checking in on the elderly, the police will shop for them and there is lots of community groups set up to help too so hopefully everyone will be ok

EvilPea · 28/03/2020 23:12

Housing associations are still insisting on gas safety checks being done. The engineer will have been to several houses
If I’ve understood it correctly, They should be asking people to leave their homes whilst it’s carried out.

Remingtonsteeleswife · 28/03/2020 23:13

Ye have left it way way too late. Ye are about 2 weeks behind where ye should be. Its insane the way the Uk have acted. Insane.
