To be frustrated with DH over tins I have saved

Like others, I got wind of what was coming re CV back in early February and began adding a few tins and long life items to each shop (different shops and over 6 weeks, no panic buying here). It was mainly me not DH doing this and I don't drive so was more of an effort. Because of this planning none of us have had to leave the house for over a week. I stocked up the freezer too.
Yesterday, DH seeing all the tins (not loads, maybe 25 of different things - beans, tomatoes, fruit, soup) he exclaimed 'we have loads of tins, I might start experimenting, maybe learn to make houmous'. DH isn't much of a cook but has other qualities. I got the chickpeas to use as bases for things like stews not so DH can 'experiment' with food he will only likely eat. Also we have 2 long dated houmous in the fridge (we are veggie!) WIBU to snap at him 'I didnt lug those tins home for experiments. They are for making proper meals'. Being slightly dramatic as I didnt lug them home at once but DH is generally bad at food waste, meal planning, checking dates etc so it just wound me up. The tins didnt just appear, I got them and he like many others only realised the severity of this a few weeks ago and laughed at me stocking up on tins. If it wasn't for me one of us would be queuing for the supermarket right now but as it is we have plenty of food to last a few months if careful.

OK my approach to this would be - you can make hummous from it - have you got a recipe? Let use what we have first so that isn't wasted and I will keep a tin back for that. Then quietly ignore till forgotten

lljkk · 28/03/2020 13:12

Thanks for explaining you meant 1 tin as important contribution to 4 small adult curry portions, not one tin for 16 portions. I'm with you on needing small portions. My weekly calorie needs are down by (omg) ~6000 calories. Which is nuts. Is result of almost no active travel and the kettle being 20 steps away from work laptop rather than 4 firedoors away from (work) desktop PC.

the tin stash is separate to our already full cupboards

Ah... you still haven't confirmed the whole tin count in the home, then. come on, I'll tell you mine...

I just counted all ours (household of 4 greedy very active adult size people & a preteen). We have 10 tins right now:

1 Peaches, 1 apricots
2 mixed beans, 2 x mini baked beans
4 x tuna

plus jars of salsa & jam, bags of rice...

CSIblonde · 28/03/2020 13:15

YANBU. In Feb, I did the same, couple of extra tins every time I shopped. It meant I could avoid big supermarket which has only just put in one in one out, distancing & perspex screens at till. The Poundshop email was the first I got re this, which I really appreciated as he said 'we know not all our shoppers can bulk purchase'. I live in a not v wealthy part of London so it's good someone gets it.

goteam · 28/03/2020 13:29

llkkj we probably have 50 altogether but get through 2 in an average day really albeit a tin of baked beans for the kids, tinned tomatoes for pasta sauce for us all, kidney beans for a chilli. I get we aren't running out any time soon but as PPs have pointed out, shops are getting low on tins. Also bear in mind that as DH and I are veggie / vegan, we wont have the steaks and sausages etc that other people will be eating as their main. The tin of chickpeas or whatever it is will form the basis of our meals so we get through more.

My tin count is about 30.

6 of tuna
8 of tomatoes
2 coconut milk
3 sweetcorn
the rest are various beans, chick peas etc.

We also have quite a lot of jam and preserves from last years allotment harvest.

2 adults, 3 teens.

billy1966 · 28/03/2020 13:50

I forgot mackeral....probably 40....love mackeral mixed with loads of black pepper and mayo...on crackers

10 tuna.

Tins are very handy.

OP, you are married to a twat.

I would imagine for a lot of women they are going to be allergic to the twats in their lives by the end of this.

SonjaMorgan · 28/03/2020 13:56

Well he would need olive oil and possibly tahini (I love it but some don't), peanut butter, chilli, red peppers and/or garlic. You cant really go wrong making it. Save the aquafaba too.

You kind of are unreasonable in that this could be an ideal time to learn new skills and recipes, cut costs and make your food healthier.

ineedaholidaynow · 28/03/2020 14:13

I haven’t seen tins of chickpeas for about 3 weeks in our local supermarket. Today there was one lonely pack of tinned tomatoes and some tinned artichokes. That was it!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/03/2020 14:15

No!

Peanut butter has no place in hummus. Desist.

goteam · 28/03/2020 14:20

sonjamorgan peanut butter?! In houmous!!?! That's the sort of experiment I fear my husband making that will end up in the bin.

Our food is pretty healthy. We have our different strengths at home. DH is excellent at doing science and craft projects with the kids and I'm good at cooking. I'm happy to stick to the cooking. I am baking with the kids still.

I once made hummus with red lentils. Wasn’t too bad, but hummus it wasn’t.

GrumpyHoonMain · 28/03/2020 14:51

It is possible to skin then grind tinned chickpeas to a paste and use them instead of eggs / chickpea flour in a whole host of recipes.

goteam · 28/03/2020 15:01

GrumpyHoonMain that's the thing, I know if you had chickpeas coming out of your ears there are a load of things you could do with them but we don't. We have a couple of tins. I use chia seeds or flax seed to replace eggs and chickpea flour to make frittata type things and it is pretty versatile. I'm trying to get through to DH that the chickpeas are for meals not to faff about deciding a way of experimenting with!!

As a mum of four school age kids I'm intrigued as to how other parents of larger family cope with such small amounts of food in normal day to day living? Right now I'm have one scoop of out date slim fast as a meal to save food.

In a normal week I buy 800g of mince and cook it with veg, 4 tins of chopped Tom's and two cartons of passata to make 12 portions of sauce. Do people really eat less than this in one meal? Do you only use fresh tomatoes or one tin to serve 6?

Wtf am I doing wrong? I think mine is about 50p a portion surely that's already pretty frugal?

playthestation · 28/03/2020 15:19

I think people just have to eat different food.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/03/2020 15:27

I find I eat less because I don’t get too tired from work and commuting.

Also, I tend nit to eat when I’m stressed, but I’m fully aware that’s very individual.

Greenpop21 · 28/03/2020 15:32

If I’m making spaghetti bolognaise for 4, I use 400g mince to 1 tin chopped tomatoes with some stock and tomato purée plus the other ingredients.

aupresdemonarbre · 28/03/2020 15:34

Yabu, as long as nothing is wasted why does it matter if you have experimental hummus or chickpea stew for dinner? I don’t see the issue.

sleepingpup · 28/03/2020 15:57

25 tins. Blimey. We are a family of 6 in isolation and not a tin in site. You can buy dried pulses and beans etc and make it yourself. Takes up way less space and lasts longer and makes more

Do you get medals for this?

@Legoandloldolls

We're the same as you people on here eat like birds!

TriangleBingoBongo · 28/03/2020 16:12

Totally agree! Not a time to waste food.

Riv · 28/03/2020 16:27

@ aupresdemonarbre because
Her DP is the only one that eats hummus.
There are already 2 pots of hummus in the fridge.
Which would make a good evening family meal hummus or curry / stew ? (Remember, only one of them eats hummus and seems to enjoy it as a snack or starter, not a main course)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/03/2020 17:26

We're the same as you people on here eat like birds!

Hey!

I eat like a bird!

(A gannet is a bird, right?)

Lovelydovey · 28/03/2020 17:31

No peanut butter and lots of lemon juice for hummus!

NiteFlights · 28/03/2020 17:35

Hummus made with peanut butter is fine!

No need to make hummus if you have some in the fridge though, OP’s husband is an idiot.

goteam · 28/03/2020 17:51

Thanks all. To be clear I do like houmous too but we already have loads!
