To not give up my delivery slots..

Hi all, background... I am not vulnerable and I am fit and healthy and able to go shopping but it’s extremely difficult. I have two children with autism and my partner has to work. I live 12 miles away from the nearest large supermarket. The village shop doesn’t sell much.

I get my shopping delivered every week without fail at the same time every week. I always book slots in advance particularly at usual peak times - Christmas, Easter, summer holidays.

My partner still has to work long hours so not as easy as one of us getting to the shop. By the time he finishes this week the shops are shut. They don’t open late here.

I have two shops booked. One for next week and another for the week after.

Been told I’m selfish for not leaving them for the vulnerable?

I booked these 2 weeks ago! When Tesco released easter bank holiday priority slots for delivery savers!

Surely I should keep my slots and not be made to feel guilty?

I know I’ll probably have to shop in store after these 2 slots!

Because my kids need to eat @Jellykat! I have a village shop that sells hardly anything and it’s at least a 20 minute drive to the supermarket. Live rural and nothing else around! I can’t do two weeks shopping as limited on the amount of products you can buy.

My Son will eat only certain brands of certain things (please don’t tell me he would eat anything if he was hungry, he won’t he has major sensory food issues). I can’t stock as I normally would before this as nothing’s in stock and limited on numbers.

I booked these 2-3 weeks ago when there was still
A normal amount of slots left! I always book
I’m advance to get the same slot every week!

If your children are likely to make social distancing in a supermarket difficult, I don't think you're wrong to keep a slot - but two so close together does seem a bit greedy. Why cant't you just make one of those slots a bigger order?

Yes, you might run out of 'fresh' stuff, but stock up on store cupboard things. In your shoes, I'd modify one shop to get more stuff, then if most of it turns up, I'd then cancel the second slot and free it up for someone else.

strawberrylipgloss · 27/03/2020 19:38

Someone on another thread said that weekly slots are unreasonable but I'm a single mum who's started to show symptoms today so I'm glad that I have them now. My neighbours are 70+ on one side and a family with 3 kids on the other so I can't ask them to do a full shop for me without impacting them on the item limit front.

Locally the shops have most goods. I'm not after highly sought after goods like pasta, eggs and loo roll plus Tesco have started an 80 item limit.

In your case I think your children could find things very stressful (waiting to get in, waiting to pay, trying to get them not to touch things...)

I have one more home delivery slot booked as I booked it 2wks ago, but after that I’m doing click and collect and saving click and collect for those who are self isolating.

TWD89 · 27/03/2020 19:40

YANBU.

I’ve done the same but we are a family of six and I’m shopping for three vulnerable households on top. Key worker DH is still working FT (actually he’s now on six days a week rather then 5)

I’m not vulnerable but getting to a supermarket would be difficult and I’m buying for 11 people at the moment!

Ilovecharliecat · 27/03/2020 19:41

It’s your normal method of shopping and your children are autistic keep them and don’t feel any guilt

TrashPanda · 27/03/2020 19:41

For everyone saying get enough for a fortnight and cancel the second one. You can't buy enough for a fortnight at a time now because Tesco limit you to 3 of a single item and a max of 80 items in your shop.

alloutoffucks · 27/03/2020 19:42

So your partner is always at work when shops are open?

buttcrackmcheese · 27/03/2020 19:43

Are you not considered a vulnerable family because of the DC with autism?

Darbs76 · 27/03/2020 19:44

The 80 items makes it difficult now to order enough for 2wks. Plus hardly anything is available. Wondering when the panic buying would settle

Cyberworrier · 27/03/2020 19:44

It is your relative who is being unthinking, not you. They don’t understand, a lot of people don’t have much capacity in putting themselves in other’s shoes. Have your shops and keep safe.

Rosecatter · 27/03/2020 19:45

Yes, keep them. You don't know what might happen in even the next few days.
Are supermarkets actually cancelling people's booked slots?

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 27/03/2020 19:45

Yanbu - but going forward maybe you could do an order fortnightly but for more food iyswim?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/03/2020 19:45

Keep them!

I can't even get one, and if I could I would guard it with my LIFE!

Bagofworries · 27/03/2020 19:46

I'm concerned how you will get your shopping done after these deliveries you have booked. Do you have enough support IRL to make sure you get what you need?

JaneEyre7 · 27/03/2020 19:49

I'm bloody fuming that Ocado have cancelled my reserved slots. I've been a loyal customer for 10+ years, am T2 diabetic and don't want to spend hours slepping round a supermarket touching things that hundreds of others have. I don't do supermarket shopping for that very reason.

If you've got a slot, keep it.

alloutoffucks · 27/03/2020 19:49

Yes they are cancelling people's slots at other supermarkets, I am sure TESCO will follow suit. Because they are being prioritised for the shielded group.

Katie2017 · 27/03/2020 19:51

From what I've read on here practically everyone has a child with autism or multiple children with autism so lots of people in the same boat. I think slots should just be for the vulnerable and elderly.

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 27/03/2020 19:52

Keep them OP you have every right to them . Like someone else says you’d have no idea who else would get them anyway. I have always booked my slots up in advance , always. Hence I have had the last few and the next few weeks covered. I’m not giving them up. I pay a delivery saver and I’m entitled to them. I’m also including bits for our elderly neighbours in our delivery. I am surprised at anyone who says you are wrong.

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/03/2020 19:52

I think it’s selfish unless your dh works 7 days a week and no shop is open when he isn’t at work.

bmbonanza · 27/03/2020 19:53

The supermarkets need to put on 24/7 delivery slots and take on more staff at this time.

nancyclancy123 · 27/03/2020 19:53

YANBU at all!!

ginghamstarfish · 27/03/2020 19:53

My DH said this today, that I should give up my delivery slots for the next two weeks - which I refuse to do. If I could hand them directly to someone who needed them more than me, then I would. But I can't.

CottonSock · 27/03/2020 19:54

Bloody hell, keep your slots op.

Flightsoffancy · 27/03/2020 19:54

@SchadenfreudePersonified
This!!

I feel really bad for you, op, reading some of these replies. Keep your slots, use them as best you can and be glad that you and your children are saved the stress and misery, not to mention the potential danger to you, and that you might pose to others in terms of infection. Good luck and I hope you get another two slots!
