Just spoken to one of his family members. He works for his friend and earns about 45k a year. He fiddles his earnings down to 16k a year and his friend pays him the rest in cash so he has to pay less child maintenance (he has 0 access so this would be fairly high should he declare his full earnings). He is a safeguarding risk to our son and court ordered 0 contact, and I have a lifelong restraining order, so IMHO he deserves no sympathy. He's just been on the phone to this family member who described him as 'going mental' that he's only going to be paid 80% of what he's declared by the government. Apparently it's all my fault as if he didn't have to pay me child maintenance he wouldn't have to have fiddled the books in the first place 😅 cheered me up in my isolation...

Awesome OP!

longwayoff · 27/03/2020 11:08

Excellent OP, I was pondering on the tax dodging self employed after Sunak's announcement. Glad to hear it's working. Good luck to you and family, enjoy his discomfort.

Darkbendis · 27/03/2020 11:10

Too bad, how sad Grin Grin Grin

itsgettingweird · 27/03/2020 11:12

I always say Sunak was clever.

Clearly more clever than any tax dodgers have him credit for.

He will have known this would happen - I'm sure of it. And I'm sure he's realised that in the long term it'll mean people will declare and pay tax. Because they know this could go on for a few years yet.

Bubblewings · 27/03/2020 11:12

Yep, there will be a lot of self-employed individuals out there thinking...shit! Just like your ex.
I am self-employed and although there will be a bit of a wait, I’m grateful for anything at the moment.
The bit I’m confused about is how people who, for whatever reason, missed the January tax return deadline, have been let off and have been given more time to submit - I can imagine a lot of their expenses will suddenly disappear and their net profit will be looking very impressive!...or am I being cynical.

VettiyaIruken · 27/03/2020 11:13

Fantastic!
I just hope they are stupid enough to complain to HMRC!

PinkCrayon · 27/03/2020 11:13

Haha serves him right Smile

Roweeeeena · 27/03/2020 11:16

It really is glorious. My neighbour was gloating last year about being able to fiddle his "expenses". I just listened and smiled as he ranted about the situation the other day.

Penners99 · 27/03/2020 11:17

Now that put a big smile on my face. Thank you OP!

Bubblewings · 27/03/2020 11:18

Vettiyalruken
Yep!
“But it’s not fair HMRC, most of my income comes from all the hidden cash-in-hand jobs I do”!

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/03/2020 11:19

I love Karma

Canadianpancake · 27/03/2020 11:19

That's wonderful. Karma at it's finest!

longwayoff · 27/03/2020 11:19

It's rare, unheard of maybe, for me to express appreciation of a Tory - and he's bound to disappoint me in the future - but Sunak is handling this impressively. Far better than any of the rest of his party, or any other, would be likely to offer.

AnotherMurkyDay · 27/03/2020 11:22

Well he just got his just deserts didn't he? Not even worth my tiniest of tiny violins. Love how it's still your fault OP. Some men are just vile.

firsttimemummyd · 27/03/2020 11:25

Beautiful karma

Iwalkinmyclothing · 27/03/2020 11:26

YANBU at all.

I have to admit the creeping realisation of the self employed, contractors and under the table workers this week that the scams they have been running for years to avoid paying tax, child maintenance and so on are now going to bite them very hard in the arse has made me smile a lot.

Orangecake123 · 27/03/2020 11:26

Karma is only a bitch (or bastard) if you are.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 27/03/2020 11:27

Just to add- I am aware not all s/e people and contractors are tax and maintenance dodging wankers, DH was s/e for years- it really is only those who have been scamming for years and now are falling foul of their own shit behaviour I am laughing at

Daffodil55 · 27/03/2020 11:30

Karma at it's best. Cheat and get away with it for so long if you are lucky but in this situation if you have fiddled your tax return figures for years then it is time to survive on the lower salary you always told HMRC you earned. Anyone wanting to claim the S.E. payments have not got a leg to stand on and can only accept what they are given and keep their mouths shut.

I can think of quite a few people known to me over the years who did not submit the right figures to the tax office. Very easy to do but they will be laughing on the other side of their faces now.

SlothMama · 27/03/2020 11:31

Karma is a great thing isn't it? All these dodgy tax evaders are all kicking themselves now. I have no sympathy as they've gotten extra cash for years doing this

Alez · 27/03/2020 11:33

You should report him for tax evasion...

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 27/03/2020 11:34

Aw, what a shame for him! Now he will have to live on a tighter budget, just like the kid he let down. Diddums. 🙃🤣🙊

springiscoming12 · 27/03/2020 11:37

Karma is a bitch!!

fivesecondrule · 27/03/2020 11:39

I really hope as a result of all this HMRC will work with the CSA and do a better job of looking into all these 'parents' that claim to have no money for their children and are avoiding a hefty level of tax.

Camphillgirl · 27/03/2020 11:41

Great

This will sort out plenty who never declare full earnings.

His employer must be taking cash as well if he is able to pay him balance in cash

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

Yay
