To think I can still go out with Flu symptoms (essential reasons only)

HJWT · 27/03/2020 06:09

Obviously not atm because I feel like 💩 but when I feel better I don't need to self isolate for 2 weeks? I need to do the food shop on Monday so only essential reasons.

I checked on the NHS website and it seems I have flu symptoms no corona virus (no continuous cough or high temp) even though I have had the flu vaccine!

Thanks for any insight!

I think you should not!

and how do you have flu symptoms without temperature. Do you mean you have a cold/runny nose?

HJWT · 27/03/2020 07:33

@2MapleMuffins I have been staying home with the 2 children for just over 2 weeks as my DD touches everything and runs of in shops so do not want to risk taking her anywhere!

Aesopfable · 27/03/2020 07:35

Doesn’t sound like flu if you are contemplating going out. Flu lands you in bed for a week or more and with a fever. If it is not Covid then it sounds more like a cold.

PhoneTwattery · 27/03/2020 07:36

You’ve been in for two weeks? How did you contract whatever you have?

dementedpixie · 27/03/2020 07:37

If you dont have a temperature or cough then SI rules arent applicable. If SI then its 7 days for those with symptoms and 14 days for the rest if the household.

HJWT · 27/03/2020 07:38

@chocoholico No I have all flu symptoms except temp & cough, but I have had the vaccine so this is a possibility.

DH did not have the vaccine last year for flu and nearly died from influenza A, he did not have a cough then either!

OP posts:
iano · 27/03/2020 07:38

Why can't your DH continue to go shopping? Best to stay home for 7 days from the start of your symptoms.
The nhs website is woefully inadequate in respect of symptoms. Try the WHO website for a better list.

HJWT · 27/03/2020 07:40

@PhoneTwattery 2 weeks yesterday was DD's last day at nursery but DH has still been going to get the food shop.

That sucks being unwell with a teething baby. I remember those days well. Hope you all pull through well soon!!

Sunnydays60 · 27/03/2020 07:40

It's interesting though, no one has mentioned how irresponsible it is of the government and the NHS to literally pin it all on just 2 symptoms and conveniently not mention the others in any kind of official capacity...

OP won't be the only person questioning this. I was ill at the start of all this and literally EVERYONE I spoke to said it won't be Corona, you've got a runny nose and your cough isn't dry or often enough, IT'LL JUST BE A COLD. The doctors even asked me to come in and see them. (I'd even go so far as to say that if I had suggested it was corona I'd have been ridiculed for over reacting... much like a person taking time off work for a cold might have been before all this). I actually went to the doctors because I was worried I had parvo virus and needed a blood test and obviously wouldn't have gone otherwise.

Yet now everyone has changed their tune... I personally would be staying at home like the OP has said she will. But offering that advice is possible without being insulting! She would, after all, be following government guidance to ignore it. Get cross at them, not her!!!!!

Pinkarsedfly · 27/03/2020 07:41

HJWT I have your symptoms and we’re all self-isolating just to be on the safe side.

GnomicGnu · 27/03/2020 07:41

The symptoms they are advertising are out of date. We are seeing confirmed cases without the continuous cough and fever.

We’ve all self isolated for sore throat / headache / chesty cough / upset stomach. No fever. Cough is persisting though.

It’s hard to know if it was just a cold or something more - and unless there’s a widely available and reliable antibody test we’ll never know.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 27/03/2020 07:42

There are no limits to stooopid 🤦🏾‍♀️

PlugholePencil · 27/03/2020 07:42

Just came on to say @Bubblemonkey totally unnecessary and nasty comment.
OP, well done for checking. Sorry some people are so rude!

Fivefourthree · 27/03/2020 07:44

@Sunnydays60 I completely agree with you. I thought it but didn't write it. Thank you for articulating it so clearly.

1forAll74 · 27/03/2020 07:45

Don't go out anywhere, even if you think that you have usual winter type flu, you are not an expert on these things, and can't properly diagnose if it is the usual usual winter type flu.. All flu type things are horrible, but this is different, it does many more damaging things to your body, as could mean a death.. it is not a good thing to write about here, it is not a good thing to be even thinking about, but you have to follow all expert advice on this. and believe that all the advice is to make things better for you..

Willyoujustbequiet · 27/03/2020 07:45

No!!!!!

And neither can anyone in your household for 14 days. Fgs

Stripeyfrog · 27/03/2020 07:45

This chart shows when you/family members can go out. You are permitted to go out after 7 days if you no longer have symptoms

To think I can still go out with Flu symptoms (essential reasons only)
dementedpixie · 27/03/2020 07:46

OPs original question was I just wanted to know If I had to self isolate for 2 weeks after the symptoms all go

The answer is no as its 7 days for those with symptoms and 14 days for the rest of the household. Maybe you should amend your thread title

bodgeitandscarper · 27/03/2020 07:47

Her dh can't go shopping because he could be carrying the virus!

Sunnydays60 · 27/03/2020 07:48

@bumblingbovine49
Genuinely interested - what is the estimated effectiveness for the flu vaccine this year? Lots of people I know had the vaccine have been very ill since and when I researched, I didn't see a percentage higher than around 50% in the last few years. In fact one year (2016?) It was in the teens!

vdbfamily · 27/03/2020 07:55

if your symptoms started Monday and you are first in household to get symptoms, you are able to go out again next Monday( 7 days) providing you feel well and do not have a temperature. People are far too confused about the 14 day thing!

TeenPlusTwenties · 27/03/2020 08:01

In my view you obviously need to self isolate because at this time you shouldn't be risking passing on any flu like infection to anyone else.

  • you can't be certain what it is
  • someone else might then need to self isolate, which if eg they are an NHS worker puts more strain
  • flu can be serious for at risk groups too so you don't want to be putting more strain on the NHS by someone else getting ill even if it isn't C19.
ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 27/03/2020 08:03

@Sunnydays60 is quite right, I think we urgently need updated official guidance on symptoms likelihood, timelines, severity, etc and hence updated guidance on when to quarantine.

Looking back I now strongly suspect our 14yo had it in early Feb, but corona didn't cross our minds at the time and I can't think where he could have picked it up from at that point. He started with 'cold' symptoms, then persistent cough, temperature, body aches and loose stools. He had a two days off school added to a weekend for the worst time and was fully recovered within ten days.

Currently my husband and I have both had a snuffly nose and occasional cough - one cough just to clear the throat, once possibly twice in a day - for two days. I'm almost certain its a standard cold, but given the circumstances

DingleberryRose · 27/03/2020 08:04

Why are people STILL having difficulty with this it’s not hard ffs!!!
