To think people should not be allowed to edit online food shops?

  1. clogs up the ridiculously busy servers
  2. people are using it to mess the system - eg booking several slots with bread and intending on editing nearer the time

It all feels so unnecessary and if people weren’t allowed to edit beyond the first shop perhaps the online queue wouldn’t be 10000000 long

I had a booking I got 2 weeks ago for today - I put in a normal enough shop and included lots of wine and a few other things. But we sat down on Wednesday night to go through it and needed to remove a few things that we didn't need (including rice, and reducing the wine), and add a few things we had used up - like veg and cheese.

Would you prefer that I continued to buy things I didn't need and others then couldn't get them? And it also allowed me to add back in other versions of things that were unavailable (I need loo roll, and the pack I ordered is not available but others are).

For the slot I got for 6th April, I used a basic normal shop to reserve it, but I already think I will need to add washup liquid and probably teabags. But I will try and only edit once, again a couple of days ahead when I have a better idea of our actual needs at that point.

drspouse · 27/03/2020 10:42

@PlanDeRaccordement I think you may need them to adjust their expectations.

drspouse · 27/03/2020 10:55

(We are two vulnerable adults due to health. I have an Ocado order booked for Sunday and really hoping we can get in to edit it - in a queue right now which keeps getting longer it seems - I have no idea if we have what we ordered or what we need)

drspouse · 27/03/2020 11:06

FFS it's just gone up from 26 minutes to 51.
As I'm in DS room and he's trying to trash it and hurt me I have no idea if I'll be able to get in without him breaking my phone anyway.

drspouse · 27/03/2020 11:45

Oh and now it's paused...

Housewife2010 · 27/03/2020 12:21

I never understand why people temporarily fill up their Ocado slot with stuff they won't want. Ocado has an excellent system where you can fill your trolley with a suggested order which is based on your recent orders. I always save my slot with the suggested order then edit closer to the time. At the moment I'm trying to only edit once which is what Ocado is asking customers to do to reduce traffic.

whogoncheckmeBoo · 27/03/2020 12:27

I edited mine to remove some items of my standard list. One being toilet roll (I ran out and had to buy from a shop not stockpiled!)
I added milk - we are using a lot more with so many people in the house.
I wasn’t doing it to ‘mess with the system’. And I had to wait ages in a queue too to do this so I am not just affecting others. What else are you meant to do ?

Pipandmum · 27/03/2020 12:33

I don't understand your logic, and I do not think that how the system works. I had a tesco delivery (we don't have ocado) booked from two weeks ago due in another ten days and I have had t edit it as needs change. Tesco doesn't have a queuing system so me changing doesn't affect new bookings as the dint exactly reserve the food I've ordered, its what's in stock at the time they do the picking.

crispysausagerolls · 27/03/2020 13:24

Ocado order arriving today - did not edit and everything is there bar 1 item. 3 substitutions but for the same items just different brands.

I had to amend my Tesco order last night as it was originally an order for a weekend away in a cottage. Now that we’re all trapped in the house I need a lot less wine, cheese board and snacks for days out and a lot more basic stuff.

Hingeandbracket · 27/03/2020 13:32

@crispysausagerolls Do you work for HMRC?

crispysausagerolls · 27/03/2020 13:35

No no lol no HMRC

Tesco have cancelled two of my deliveries in the last two weeks with a couple of hours notice. They advised me to add the items they didn’t deliver to the next shop I have booked (and hope that this one arrives). Without the edit option that wouldn’t be possible.

And as someone else has said I regularly order the same basic items up to a month in advance. My editing is as likely to be removing items I now know I don’t need (eg DH bought eggs, bread and milk locally this morning) as it is to be adding items.

Quarantimespringclean · 27/03/2020 13:44

@FairyBatman. Me too! I had an order due today for a girls weekend at the coast that was mostly crisps and gin. Obviously the trip has been cancelled but luckily I was able to cancel the slot earlier in the week and hopefully free it up for someone else’s less frivolous delivery.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 27/03/2020 13:48

@crispysausagerolls
No amending an order is not why people cant get slots, its because they have increased traffic x10

Inkpaperstars · 27/03/2020 15:25

I had to queue all night just to edit order for my DM who is isolatinv, just really hope some of it turns up.

edenhills · 27/03/2020 15:33

You should only be allowed to hold one slot at a time though.

LolaSmiles · 27/03/2020 15:42

Why? It's not unreasonable to want to shop weekly and the slots are available a few weeks ahead.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 27/03/2020 15:57

The thing with people buying more than they need is that many people need more just now because they are at home. Usually all 3 of us have lunch at work or nursery during the week, and go out for lunch at the weekend . We also use things like tea / coffee / lop roll / handwash most of the day at work, so I find we are going through supplies a lot quicker!

drspouse · 27/03/2020 15:57

Just got an email to say no more editing for the Sunday slot.

Codswalloped · 27/03/2020 16:01

I just edited my slot for tomorrow eve to add wine and Ben and Jerry’s.
The thought of it is really improving my mental health right now 🤣

It hadn’t crossed my mind that I shouldn’t due to the servers. I think that’s a bit bonkers tbh.

blueheaven97 · 27/03/2020 16:02

OP I agree with you - under normal circumstances editing is fine, but I don't think that people who have already managed to place an order should be allowed to clog up the service for people who literally can't get anything at all.

YgritteSnow · 27/03/2020 16:05

people are using it to mess the system - eg booking several slots with bread and intending on editing nearer the time

Slots are near on impossible to get and certainly on Ocado only being released day by day so not sure people can be booking into the future like that.

strawberrylipgloss · 27/03/2020 16:05

Your order is picked a few hours before it's delivered so putting bread in the order as a place marker then removing it the day before because you have some bread isn't messing with the system.

If you don't check your order closer to delivery date then you won't know what is out of stock/just came back into stock.

LolaSmiles · 27/03/2020 16:54

This.
If I want to order my shop for 2.5 weeks time (which is our next available one) then I can either put our usual basics in, plus some ideas of what we might need in a fortnight's time. I won't know what we need until earlier that week because I'm not psychic.

What else should I do? Develop psychic powers? Make up a shop that covers anything we might possibly need because that's what I'll have to do if they decide we can't edit the shops anymore (and that will mean I'll be making a larger shop than normal because I'll be having to get basics just in case we've ran out of face another trip out)? Only order the very basics but not enough for a week-fortnight's meals and then do multiple top up shops and drive around to get items?

I don't see how people editing their order closer to their slot is the issue here.
