I didn't do anything wrong....did I?

DD desperate to see her friend who lives a few streets away. She made brownies and we dropped them on her doorstep, went back onto the pavement around 12 feet away, DD called her and she came to the door, took the brownies and said thank you.

They then call each other while we're walking home (social distancing all the way but not many people around) and her older sister shouts in the background "her mum let her do that? That was stupid!!!" meaning we shouldn't have brough the brownies round to her house. I couldn't see anything wrong with it. I mean, the postman delivers mail to houses each day. Am I missing something? Or is she worried about eating contaminated food - we washed our hands thoroughly during the process.

So this is an expert on virology stating that there is a risk of contamination on food packaging.

Are you familiar with 'risk management' ? It's where you asses risks.

Pishposhpashy · 29/03/2020 11:07

No more leaving the house for any of us soon. Can’t wait.

Me neither, it'll hopefully mean an end to all the tedious melts on here telling people off for chatting to their neighbours from 3 metres away, or posting a letter.

Strongmummy · 29/03/2020 11:07

Ffs, the OP was on her daily exercise , with a member of her family, maintaining social distancing. She wasn’t meeting up with friends and sitting in the park sharing a bottle of cider 🙄. Do you sit in your house in a hazmat suit @ethelfleda ?

Strongmummy · 29/03/2020 11:09

Also READ the bbc article. It says there is no risk of corona from food !!!!!

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 11:11

I never said there was a risk of catching CV from food. I said the risk is from the handling of the container that holds the food Confused

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 11:12

Yep. In fact I’ve been banging on about it all the way through the thread. Necessary vs unnecessary risks. If it isn’t necessary then don’t risk it.

Ok, and if you wash your hands after handling the container, as you ought to be, then what?

That's not to mention that even with the unlikely possibility the container was contaminated, the chance of it containing a viral load big enough to infect you is extremely negligible.

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 11:13

In that case why not just stay home now? If you’re really looking forward to being confined to your house then nobody is stopping you from practising this now, are they?

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 11:15

pish you are clearly not an epidemiologist so you’ll forgive me if I assume you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Pishposhpashy · 29/03/2020 11:18

I do! Haven't been out for my daily exercise since Thursday because I can't be arsed.

you are clearly not an epidemiologist so you’ll forgive me if I assume you don’t know what you’re talking about.

That's absolutely fine, and I presume you aren't either so you'll forgive me if I assume the same about you.

MarginalGain · 29/03/2020 11:19

Yep. In fact I’ve been banging on about it all the way through the thread. Necessary vs unnecessary risks. If it isn’t necessary then don’t risk it.

But if you were to approach risk rationally, you would mitigate all risks proportionally. Have you done this?

For example, we're all far more likely to die of heart disease directly from lack of exercise that coronavirus. Have you exercised enough today?

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 11:31

Which is fine. But in the absence of professional knowledge, I am least erring on the side of caution.

Strongmummy · 29/03/2020 11:32

@Ethelfleda no, I’m really not. I have health anxiety , but what I’m doing is listening to experts and maintaining my common sense. You really aren’t. If someone was kind enough to drop brownies at my house I’d wash my hands before eating them.....like I do before I eat anything.

Please please watch from videos from experts such as Dr John Campbell or Dr Fauci. They will tell you what you do and don’t need to be concerned about.

MarginalGain · 29/03/2020 11:34

Ethelfeda what did you do when you found out that 20,000 people were dying prematurely every year in the UK of poor air quality directly attributable to cars/vans/lorries?

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 11:34

But if you were to approach risk rationally, you would mitigate all risks proportionally. Have you done this?

For example, we're all far more likely to die of heart disease directly from lack of exercise that coronavirus. Have you exercised enough today?

I’m not sure how it’s relevant but I exercise daily, have a healthy weight and a healthy diet and I am young(ish)

My concerns about this CV epidemic aren’t just confined to those who might die. It’s also for people who will lose their jobs, it’s for those who are homeless, for those who use food banks, for those who will be impacted negatively by this whole thing - and it is my belief that if everyone does everything they can to stop the spread then we can minimise this damage. That really is my entire motivation. So when I hear about people taking unnecessary risks, it infuriates me because I know that so many other people are doing the same thing.

goldpartyhat · 29/03/2020 11:37

Probably get binned anyway.

silversquid · 29/03/2020 11:45

in theory, even if I HAD coronavirus without symptoms and baked someone brownies, if I was washing my hands continually and did not sneeze or cough over them, how would they be a path to infection?
@Pishposhpashy
From anyone else in your house. The OP made clear that the brownie cooking was a communal activity involving her DC.

Incidentally if you were delivering your theoretical brownies would you attach a note saying 'Hi neighour here's some brownies. BTW I have coronavirus but I'm not displaying any symptoms, I didn't cough on them and I washed my hands so you should be ok' or would you just deliver them and say nothing?

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 12:00

strongmummy I’ve reported my own post for calling you stupid. I shouldn’t have done that and I am sorry. Just a little overwhelmed at the moment.

Strongmummy · 29/03/2020 12:10

@ethelfleda you really didn’t need to do that. I provoked you and it was a completely rational response. Thank you for the apology and likewise I apologise to you too. Please stay safe. Everyone is in a state of high anxiety. It’s a very stressful time

Pishposhpashy · 29/03/2020 12:17

I think a huge presumption has been made that those of us who think that this is OK are not anxious. I am very anxious. In fact I have dreadful OCD and the reason I refuse to do things like wash my shopping or not get takeaways is because those things will trigger a relapse and I absolutely cannot risk that. My OCD caused me to try to kill myself 3 times. I will obey absolutely all government guidelines, I will practise social distancing, I will wash my hands regularly and disinfect surfaces as advised to by the government. I won't go further than that because the risk, to me, of my OCD relapsing is greater than my risk of CV.

Pishposhpashy · 29/03/2020 12:18

However, I don't really know why I am bothering to say all of that as those of us with severe mh issues have been repeatedly told we do not matter on MN over the past couple of weeks.

cantata · 29/03/2020 12:25

MarginalGain and Pishposh, I am struggling to find the energy, but yours are voices of good sense and reason in a sea of batshittery.

QuestionMarkNow · 29/03/2020 12:41

I agree with you @Pishposhpashy and @MarginalGain.

NewYearNewJob123 · 29/03/2020 12:46

Questionmark2: 100% agree. Its entirely possible to be worried and have a clear awareness of the issues without accusing people of trying to kill my Mum because they popped a card in someones letterbox or made a brownie.
