Can my children go out for another walk today?

I’m aware it’s episode of exercise today. I have not been out today.

Basically my partner took dc and the dog out this morning before he went to work - he has to go to work. I was waiting in for a delivery so couldn’t go.

Going a little crazy and thinking of going out for a walk myself but that means two walks for dc today!

I live in a rural area. Hardly anyone around. Probably wouldn’t meet anyone and plenty of open space to socially distance anyway.

Aibu to take them out for another walk?

Common sense approach
My friend lives in dense major city centre NO
Sons GF lives on farm 1 1/2 mile single tack rd then 1 mile farm track yes

Applejaxx · 26/03/2020 18:11

I'd imagine they live in the same household and thats why they were out shopping together SpokeTooSoon. You ARE allowed out with people who live in the same house as you.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 26/03/2020 18:11

If you live in Z1 London that means complying with the once a day rule to manage the numbers of people on the streets. If you live in a remote Croft in the Scottish highlands you are not increasing the risk of transmitting the virus by leaving your property more than once a day

A rare moment of MN sanity in the current climate from @eurochick

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 26/03/2020 18:11

Well I went for a run at 5am and have just been for a walk now. So shoot me.

chomalungma · 26/03/2020 18:12

Are online retailers still running distribution centres taking orders for items like clothes, toys etc that can be delivered to your door?

The Government have asked people to do 1 piece of exercise per day which some people are getting very worked up about following - and at the same time, they have no problem with online companies operating and delivering stuff.

I assume people have stopped all online orders of non essential items?

FunkyKingston · 26/03/2020 18:12

No, because the virus can live in the air for over 3 hours, you cannot bend rules, sorry

Again, poor understanding of risk.

NY Times Coronavirus

Krisskrosskiss · 26/03/2020 18:14

Yes I would. The rules are to prevent people from spreading the virus by leaving their area without good reason and or coming into close contact with other people... you wont be spreading the virus as theres no one there to spread it to if you are in the middle of nowhere. They have to make blanket firm rules otherwise idiots will take the piss... as they ahve been doing when people were recommended to socially distance! As someone already said this isnt a collective penance it's for a specific reason so use your common sense.

Baluchistan95 · 26/03/2020 18:17

It is difficult to argue with you there.

flyingspaghettimonster · 26/03/2020 18:53

I wonder how many people bothered to go for walks before. people are so ridiculously pathetic and selfish. Going crazy because you haven't gone out today? Please.

mooboy · 26/03/2020 18:58

I can absolutely see the need for us to share outdoor space responsibly - too many people going out at the same time makes the 2m rule hard to stick to. |
The problem is people are not really understanding what lies behind the rules - going out 20 times in an isolated area with no people will harm no one and saying otherwise makes you look like an idiot. In a more built up area It would be handy to know how many people were out and about at any one time so we could plan our walks but that's also a little creepy.
But what is it with these people who seem determined to make this situation as miserable as possible for as many people as possible
Just been out for a lovely walk with dh and the dog as the sunset over the common, a few families out kicking a ball or a frisbee - everyone keeping to the correct distances - I have shouted hello at everyone we've passed - had a chat with someone we knew across a road and generally had a lovely time - now having a glass of wine and relaxing...I do intend to make the most of this!

FunkyKingston · 26/03/2020 19:00

I wonder how many people bothered to go for walks before.

I used to walk to work, walk around as part of my job and then walk into town to meet friends. I would walk, all told about 13-14,000 steps a day. I didn't go for walks out as I didn't need to. I do now.

longearedbat · 26/03/2020 19:01

I do think, as other posters have said, that truly rural places are unimaginable to some. Places where you get regular power cuts, where there is no gas, where your water may come from a private supply and mobile phone reception is patchy or non existent.
I can walk down my lane into fields and whichever direction I look I cannot see any houses. In those circumstances I am highly unlikely to see people as well. I can't remember the last time I saw a policeman or heard a siren round here. I can't see that changing as our local police force is woefully understaffed, as are most of them I think. Personally I find the willingness of certain posters to dob people in without regard to their circumstances, and follow the party/police state line, quite alarming.

LotsaDo · 26/03/2020 19:02

Going crazy because you haven't gone out today? Please.

It may not bother you. Some people find being outdoors essential to their mental health. Some people have smaller houses or live in flats and will feel more cooped up being inside all the time. I personally am really struggling after only a couple of days of only going out once.

Hereforthenamethreads · 26/03/2020 19:03

Yes, go out. You live rurally. There isn't anybody else around to socially distance yourself from.

mooboy · 26/03/2020 19:03

I wonder how many people bothered to go for walks before Should be everyday for dog owners...

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 26/03/2020 19:06

Well fuck that! I tried to take my young lass out for a walk on my lovely quiet road and couldn’t believe how busy it was. I’m usually out about four times a day (dog walking before the SHTF) and didn’t recognise a single one of them. I mentioned how busy it was, it to a couple across the road and they agreed and were quite annoyed about how many people there were, because they “came all the way down here because it’s such a quiet area”. Hmm So this local had to take her daughter back inside.

That’s the difference between being responsible and staying in your own area and going out of your way to get to areas you don’t live in. That also explains the extra cars parked on the road. FFS! I wouldn’t mind but the whole town is reasonably good for walking with open park areas and wide footpaths, but mine happens to be a pretty road, with wonderful views. I feel like standing at the bottom of my garden, with a pitchfork in my hand, shouting “get orf my land”. Starting to resemble one of those people who doesn’t let people park in the road outside their house. Grin

GirlYouHaveNoFaithInMedicine · 26/03/2020 19:10

Did anyone see Dr Jenny Harries on today's Downing Street briefing talk about the importance of using your exercide allocation so as to maintain good menatal and physical health?

mooboy · 26/03/2020 19:11

The new people who are walking every day around here now - used to walk everyday around London - they have gone from walking away from home to walking around home - you don't get dibs on the pavements just because these people didn't need them for exercise before - they are shared public spaces.

Applejaxx · 26/03/2020 19:14

That sounds lovely longearedbat. Wish I lived somewhere like that.

thecatschampagne · 26/03/2020 19:20

@flyingspaghettimonster I'm getting so sick of people saying this.

Before this all started I used to do a high intensity class, in a gym that has obviously shut, four times I week. Now I can't do that, I'm want to try and maintain some level of fitness and mental health. So I'm walking and I've started running. And I imagine that other 40 odd people who used to join me in those classes are doing similar. Would you rather we sit at home on our arses, get fat and lazy and become a drain on the nhs? Or shall we continue taking responsibility for our health in adapted circumstances as best as we can. You don't get to decide who 'deserves' the pavements just because you've never seen me walk down your street before.

SpokeTooSoon · 26/03/2020 19:21

I can’t believe all the “country folk” bitching about “city folk” because they are daring to step outside for a bloody walk. So what if they get in their car to drive to a nicer, quieter place for a walk? So what? You don’t own the pavements, the wodlands, the forests. Of course more people are out walking than ever before. Because they’re not going to work and they want some fresh air in the day. So long as everyone keeps apart, what’s the problem?

RobynSH · 26/03/2020 19:23

We live in the woods. Been for a walk each day this week and never with 20ft of anyone.

We've only had one per day.

But I really can see how 2 would make a difference in such a case. If we had a dog then yes we'd probably go twice.

Lazy cats here though.

Clymene · 26/03/2020 19:28

Thecatschampagne - if you enjoy doing classes, can't you do them at home? I'm not being snide, I'm just wondering why, if you typically exercise in a room, why you can't carry on doing that. I'm not saying you can't go for a walk too but is that an option?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 26/03/2020 19:29

So what if they get in their car to drive to a nicer, quieter place for a walk?

Actually, you’re not permitted to drive to another area for a walk. My whole small town is quite pleasant to walk around, but why the fuck should I have to keep my child inside because I can’t walk in the area I live in, because the other fuckers are driving to and parking on the road I live on because they want to walk in a nicer area? That defeats the whole point of a lock down!

And again, So what if they get in their car to drive to a nicer, quieter place for a walk?

Well that’s the fucking point, isn’t it! It’s no longer bloody quiet because so many none locals have all bloody driven to it!
