Schools reopening before May half term?

What's everyone's opinion on when the schools will reopen? I think they will reopen a few weeks after Easter.

I really really hope September. I've got one going in to Y10 and she's clever enough but lazy so needs the motivation. Too much of a break is going to make things harder but obviously safety first.
Unfortunately there are a lot of idiots in this country who are obviously deaf and blind as well because they don't understand what stay at home means
Until these idiots get the message (or die) things aren't going to get any better.

reefedsail · 26/03/2020 06:57

In a way they could do with deciding. At the moment there will be key workers out there thinking school will cover May half-term and the summer holidays for childcare. If they suddenly re-open the schools after Easter, that won't be available.

Madre1972 · 26/03/2020 06:59

I would be amazed if they open before September.

FeltCarrot · 26/03/2020 07:01

I’m a TA in our infant school. This week I’ve been working in the office, next week I’m “off” but will need to report in daily and be available for work if needed. I could be back in the classroom the week after.
Whilst it might be stressful having your children at home day after day, it is terrifying for us in school. I am using my week “off” to basically self isolate so I can keep well to look after the children of our key workers.
I hope to god that this is all over as soon as possible, but to suggest the summer holidays are cancelled to get the children back to school in July and August, is frankly selfish. I will need a break when this is all done, from the children, worry and stress.
Please stay safe everyone.

Deelish75 · 26/03/2020 07:03

My eldest is Yr6 and I'm hoping they may go back for the last week or two of term in July.

Realistically I think we will go back in September. If they don't find a cure or vaccine then we'll have a second wave late autumn/early winter.

Kuponut · 26/03/2020 07:03

I can quietly hope. Not expecting it but being hopeful is keeping me going at the moment.

Kids are being told that no one knows and we will do the best we can, but I'm hoping we might get a bit of June back for them privately.

FeltCarrot · 26/03/2020 07:03

Oh, and there is no such thing as Easter Holidays and Bank Holidays for us for the foreseeable.

SlayB · 26/03/2020 07:05

What is the rush ? School before health ?

middleager · 26/03/2020 07:06

September at best. Even then so many children will be grieving and teachers will once again be at the fore helping to bring stability and care to these children.

I have two going into year 10 and this will impact on their education significantly.

But what matters first is our health.

LemonGingerCakes · 26/03/2020 07:06

We are mostly on a rota basis, so I'm working the Easter holiday but have had this week off and get the week after the holidays off.

We are gong INTO school on a rota. We are working from home on the other days. Probably through Easter unpaid. No way am I giving up my (unpaid) summer holiday.

I am doing double work at the moment - classroom teaching AND online.

Queenest · 26/03/2020 07:06

It would be helpful if they shortened the school summer holidays by a few weeks and got the kids back in earlier to give them extra time to catch up.

BogRollBOGOF · 26/03/2020 07:06

My guess is September.

I'm in a position to be able to focus on home schooling the DCs and DS1 in particular needs it. He has ASD, dyslexia and dyspraxia, so while he's very bright, there are aspects of the curriculum that he struggles with. Keeping him with an educational routine keeps his skills and routines up and my 1:1 attention is an opportunity that he doesn't have access to in school. I am worried that if he loses his routines for learning, adjusting back into school will be very difficult, more so the longer it goes on for. I'll keep them working into Easter as there's not much else to do anyway, and our routines will be established by then.

All my postponed sporting events are currently rescheduled for September onwards. Major events like the London Marathon will have set their new dates based on the best advice and predictions avaliable at that time.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 07:07

It would be unfair on teachers to shorten summer holidays.

mamatobabybears · 26/03/2020 07:09

My guess is January

Redwinestillfine · 26/03/2020 07:10

September at the earliest but we could be off for a year. If we don't have a vaccine, even if cases are falling as soon as people start mixing again we'll be back to square one. So I can see in them having to lock down again in the winter and if so it may be more disruptive to restart school for half a term then come back out....

Cassie71 · 26/03/2020 07:10

I think school starting times should be staggered. Maybe different areas going back at different times. Otherwise we will get a mass outbreak in September.

TrafalgarSquare · 26/03/2020 07:11

I was contacted by the LEA to arrange a school bus pass refund up to the end of the academic year. September.

Helpwithaversion · 26/03/2020 07:12

My kids are doing minimal work. An hour or so if something typically school work based each morning then playing. They are having the best time ever and learning things they wouldn’t have before. It’s been lovely having them at home actually I want them to have good memories of this time in my mind I need to make this a ‘fun’ time for them to protect their long term mental health so we are treating it more like a school holiday

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 26/03/2020 07:12

All my kids schools (both state & a private) are running pretty much full timetable (other than games!).....I’m really surprised that many don’t seem to have got it together as it was a pretty inevitable outcome...

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 26/03/2020 07:13

Sorry - full timetable online, I should prob make that clear😆

KatherineJaneway · 26/03/2020 07:16

September is my bet.

mochajoes · 26/03/2020 07:17

I thought maybe Aug & go through to Sept, after that they might close again as we might have another peak &
it's heading into winter.

Beautiful3 · 26/03/2020 07:18

September.

SarahInAccounts · 26/03/2020 07:20

September is my guess as well.

Longwhiskers14 · 26/03/2020 07:21

They won't be closed until January – the economy couldn't survive people being off work for that long, nor will the Govt's bailout extend that far. My optimistic guess would be end of May. Professor Neil Ferguson of the Imperial College who is one of the Govt advisors on CV and has been spot on about everything so far says the peak will be over by Easter and he's been backed by Chris Whitty's deputy. End of May is another six weeks after that. Worst case scenario is September if numbers start to rise again. But I do think it will be sooner than that and shifting the summer holidays to start mid-August until the end of Sept could be one scenario they could look at.
