Schools reopening before May half term?

What's everyone's opinion on when the schools will reopen? I think they will reopen a few weeks after Easter.

OP posts:
AnyOldSpartabix · 26/03/2020 06:15

I’m assuming everything will be shut at least until the summer holidays.

LellyMcKelly · 26/03/2020 06:15

September if they’re lucky. I’m packing away the school uniform into the loft today. It won’t be needed for 6 months.

cliffdiver · 26/03/2020 06:21

September.

As a school, we have been told to prepare home learning packs up to the end of the academic year.

Bringonspring · 26/03/2020 06:23

I think if it’s over by June then I’d like to see school back for a few weeks in July during the summer holidays. I doubt it though

Rocketinapocket · 26/03/2020 06:24

By May. You can’t feasibly expect people to work from home for months on end. Perhaps earlier.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 26/03/2020 06:24

I think they will be back after May half term so beginning of June.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of private schools do what someone above suggested and extend their working term. So only have say 4 weeks of summer holidays (that way avoid a big demand for return of fees).

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 06:26

No one knows but it would be unfair to ask more people to put themselves at risk by going back too soon. By that time we’ll have a clearer idea of the numbers which may impact on how people feel about going back.

Toomboom · 26/03/2020 06:26

We haven't reached the peak yet. Unfortunately many more are going to become ill and many will die. There is no chance they will be back by May half term.
All children are in the same boat, they are all missing out and will all get behind with school work. So it's not as if it is just one child, it will be all of them.

It will be September at the earliest.

annabell22 · 26/03/2020 06:26

Schools closed in UAE on 5 March. They gave the children and teachers two weeks of spring break, then lessons resumed last Sunday, entirely online. Pupils have access to all of the usual lesson content through Google Classrooms and are expected to engage with all lessons and complete all set tasks. Term ends on 2 July and I don't see pupils returning to school before then, even though the number of cases here is much lower than the UK, especially as it has really spiked the last week.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 06:27

September sounds a good month atm

Itsnotthatcomplicated · 26/03/2020 06:28

It would be so bad for kids, to get this to a manageable degree, so they can go out, and about and then throw them back in the classrooms.

Rocketinapocket · 26/03/2020 06:30

I think modelling of the impact of school closures has shown that it isn’t as great a factor as thought. SAGE published that last week, it’s more effective to keep vulnerable people at home and allow children back to school so people can commence working.

WanderingTrolley1 · 26/03/2020 06:31

January

HPFA · 26/03/2020 06:31

People are mad if they think the schools will be open in July and August. IF it's safe enough to reopen schools then it will also be safe enough to go on holiday so teachers and most of the popn will certainly not be willing to give those up - I doubt most insurance companies would pay up.

Peapod29 · 26/03/2020 06:35

September. That’s my hope but lots of people saying that’s very optimistic.

underneaththeash · 26/03/2020 06:36

I'm also hoping for the end of May. If Italy's cases peak around the 3rd April (as predicted), then we have 2 weeks to the peak, then 6 weeks for the curve to drop. I suspect though that the "if you have a cough or temperature your entire family must SI for 2 weeks" mantra will be in place until a vaccine or antibody check is in place.

WahWahWahs · 26/03/2020 06:37

The problem is that a lot of the teacher would be classed as ‘vulnerable people’. Our school closed in the end because we didn’t have the staff to keep it open.
3 members in one small department alone are in isolation for 12 weeks.

BramwellBrown · 26/03/2020 06:38

If they cancel summer holidays then won't teachers basically be taking a pay cut as some of them will have worked all the way through?

We are mostly on a rota basis, so I'm working the Easter holiday but have had this week off and get the week after the holidays off.

TheLittleDogLaughed · 26/03/2020 06:39

I would be over the moon if my dd got back to college in September. She can only have free education for one more year as she’ll be turning 18 and if she misses too much course work (it’s a largely practical course) and has to retake a year, she will be v upset.

I’ve heard from university friends that they are not expecting a new student intake in September ...

May return to school is impossible and I believe May is thought to be the peak of cases.

StatisticallyChallenged · 26/03/2020 06:41

I'm in Scotland so slightly earlier summer break - I'm not expecting schools to go back until mid August at the start of the new school year.

Given the on/off controls model proposed by imperial then I think it's possible that they might release childcare over the summer. Only a relatively small proportion of kids use holiday care and nurseries so it seems a possible interim step

SmallPinkBear · 26/03/2020 06:42

I know in it is obviously not as important as keeping everyone safe but China seem to be coming through it now - I hope we will do the same.
Things in Beijing are just starting to get back to normal but offices are have to leave a desk between each person so only 50% capacity and schools have not started back yet so still a long way to go

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/03/2020 06:45

Are your secondary school dcs not being set work? Dd has a full timetable. It’s actually taking her longer than the school day right now (she’s conscientious and this is all new). I am trying to get her to limit her time so that she does not push herself too hard. She’s taking very few breaks to get through it by 3.15. Eating sandwiches at her iPad etc. She’s 11 btw. And she even had homework - watching a tv programme to review...

thegreylady · 26/03/2020 06:48

I can’t see schools opening before September. For teachers of key workers dc the Easter holidays are cancelled I think.

Casino218 · 26/03/2020 06:50

They have cancelled exams op. That's your answer. Just get on and home school.

tiredanddangerous · 26/03/2020 06:53

Wishful thinking I’m afraid op. We’re looking at September at the earliest I fear, although it would be great if they could go back for the last week or two of the academic year in July.

There’s no way in hell the summer holidays would be scrapped or cut short. People will have holidays booked, and teachers are entitled to their six weeks off.
