Schools reopening before May half term?

What's everyone's opinion on when the schools will reopen? I think they will reopen a few weeks after Easter.

DS1 isn't missing any schooling. His teachers are incredible and are using a combination of Google classroom and other online platforms to continue the curriculum. I dread to think how many hours they're still putting in, but work-wise he's still engaging and working.

DS2 is easier - at 9 years old his school are posting some practical work out that we're spending a couple of hours a day on, the rest of the time we play games, build lego, read and just potter about. Neither seems to be missing anything other than the social part of school.

I thought teachers were coming into school on a rota basis. So the majority are at home.

At our school there are around 10 key worker children in the school today I believe. How many teachers do you think this requires?

Are you not getting any home learning provision?
No feedback when children respond to the home learning?
No communication via school website and/or social media, or emails?

Most teaching staff - teachers and TAs - I know are working, either at school or at home. Many are doing so whilst looking after their own children too, just like many other people who are working for home.

I am at home and not on rota, as in an at risk group.
I am still putting in my full hours, if not longer some days.
I have had around 200+ notifications from pupils (infant school) across school on our home learning platform, several emails from parents and colleagues and others via our social media.

Nope!

Oaktree55 · 27/03/2020 17:34

The school opening model is clearly available for all to read in the Imperial College Modelling Report. It won't be before September then it is likely that we will need to follow the report with intermittent closures till a vaccine which is 12-18 months away in realiting.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 27/03/2020 17:34

I’m keeping fingers crossed for early June after the half term.

joolshou · 27/03/2020 17:34

September!!

Greenpop21 · 27/03/2020 17:35

I’m a HLTA. I’m at home this week but working next week. We have a rota. We have 10 key worker children in so one teacher and one TA in. Other staff working from home. Headteacher in school.

M0nstermunch · 27/03/2020 17:35

Hopefully September!

YouokHun · 27/03/2020 17:38

I know a couple of large independent boarding schools who have already written to parents and said “see you in September as a best case scenario, certainly not before”. Ok, not the same type of school as most but I can’t see any school returning for the summer term. By the time the picture becomes clearer and we are hopefully past the peak it’s going to be quite far into the term anyway I guess.

I also wonder if they are going to have to make exam concessions for the current year 10 and year 12 as their GCSEs and A Levels are going to be compromised as well as the poor children/young people who have had this year’s exams blown out of the water.

Pat123dev · 27/03/2020 17:40

I think September. Our class teacher hope before summer. I’m not confident in that

ShanghaiDiva · 27/03/2020 17:41

September.
My dd’s School in China is starting staggered opening from Monday. School closed on 23rd January. However, getting permission to open has been a long process and there are restrictions in place to protect students eg temp checks, distancing measures and wearing a mask.
Reopening requires a massive amount of work: disinfecting, ongoing disinfecting measures and young children learning through play, how to manage lunches, keeping a distance and evacuation protocol, who to allow on campus and collection of children, when should children stay at home...etc

lizbethb37 · 27/03/2020 17:45

For the poster who said to cancel summer holidays if all clear by June/ July, can I just please remind them that us teachers and many early years professionals are still working... over the Easter holidays and May half term too. So if the schools reopen in June and go straight through into September and onto Christmas, that’s a lot of teaching staff who won’t have had a break for nearly 10 months!!!!!

crazycatgal · 27/03/2020 17:46

Those of you saying cancel the summer holidays - when so you propose we get a break then?

Most of us are still going into school on a rota and creating daily home learning too. It's also looking like we'll lose our Easter holidays as well.

FelicisNox · 27/03/2020 17:49

I think we're looking at September

cutie101 · 27/03/2020 17:54

Nobody knows. Whoever said their headteacher said... or they know a headteacher who has been told...
It's all hearsay, just like schools found out they were closing when boris Johnson announced it, at the same time as the rest of the country and the world heard it, the same will be true of reopening.
NOBODY knows.

TheCherries · 27/03/2020 18:05

We have had a partial refund on our fees and the expectation from our school there will not be a return until September

BunsyGirl · 27/03/2020 18:09

@TheCherries Can I ask you the % reduction you have been given?

purplebunny2012 · 27/03/2020 18:09

September if we're lucky

ton181 · 27/03/2020 18:12

Even if the risk diminishes in this country, you have places like Sweden who are not doing anything, so it could easily pick up pace again when borders open and planes start flying again full of people.

Rosebel · 27/03/2020 18:15

I really hope it's September. I quite like having my children at home especially as they are following a loose timetable now but I think any longer than September is going to be a challenge for teachers and children. They'll miss out on work at the start of term. It's been bad enough for Y11and 13 this year, think it'll be even worse for next year's. It's going to be hard getting everyone back in to school more after such a long break.
Of course it all depends. I'd rather have them go in a bit later and be safe than go back early and get sick of have the school close again. Yet I can see children and teachers struggling when they go back. By the way are schools giving children Easter off or are they setting work all the time?

clarehhh · 27/03/2020 18:17

GP friend thinks September

MarshaBradyo · 27/03/2020 18:18

The schools may not know at all I know but ours is planning for September.

Lianepl · 27/03/2020 18:19

September at the earliest.

Northernwarrior · 27/03/2020 18:22

Cancel summer hols, get them back in for July and August

Teachers who are still working and having to babysit though Easter and prob next holidays are going to need the Aug holiday. Not just to rest but to prep for new year.

Settlersofcatan · 27/03/2020 18:25

Something that could happen is childminders, private nurseries and nannies being allowed to restart over the summer but not schools.
