No children allowed in supermarket

My sister went to Tesco with her toddler and was told no children allowed from next week. Understand this is wise for infection control but what if you're a single parent with tiny kids and can't do online shopping?

@devlesko. Sorry have you not seen there are no delivery slots for about 3-4 weeks ?

Dishwashersaurous · 25/03/2020 15:24

In 2019, 14.9% of the families in the UK were lone parent families (2.9 million). ONS

Babyroobs · 25/03/2020 15:25

That's a good move. I went in the other day and there were kids coughing all over the place and putting their hands on the fridges etc. very high risk as they don't understand the risks. There are armies of volunteers in my village who will get shopping for single parents. It's all about working together to keep everyone safe and minimise risk for the whole community.

Blackopal · 25/03/2020 15:27

Yeah, I don't live in a village.

By parents, for parents (except single ones of course)

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 25/03/2020 15:30

There was thread after thread about locking old folks up, no one cared whether they could get their shopping.

AnotherMurkyDay · 25/03/2020 15:33

@WhentheDealGoesDown1

Yes and they were dreadful

Justaboy · 25/03/2020 15:35

Just been to Tescos, very good queuing system in place eveyone getting on fine all very civilised seemed that you got your stuff quicker!

Anyway..

A nearby parked car had a man bawl out to his presumed wife or partner who was in the queue and said;

"Oi! if you want a leg over tonight get us some rubbers OK"

Any illusion of civilisation rapidy eroded there and then:(

FoxEars · 25/03/2020 15:37

I am pleased to hear this.

So many are taking children to the supermarket; I even saw them this morning.

Absolute fools.

Whole family outings to Tesco's needs to stop

SapphireSalute · 25/03/2020 15:42

They can use click and collect. Most stores have it

Best thing they have done is an kids, our store was heaving with them on Monday.... parents just don’t care

GabsAlot · 25/03/2020 15:43

how can they be saying one person only as boris said so]
he didnt he said two people at a time when out

Blackopal · 25/03/2020 15:44

I would never take my children to a supermarket by choice. But, that's the point I don't have a choice!!

Again, in case anyone is worried, I called Aldi and Asda who said not policy and children ARE allowed.

HeIenaDove · 25/03/2020 15:48

The elderly priority treatment thing is a joke. I saw several people in their forties in the supermarkets while I was parked up waiting to go in

Im 46 and DH is 70. Ive been doing my shopping in the late afternoon but some (though i realize not all of them) could have older partners who cant get out or have been instructed to stay in as part of the vulnerable group.

Kab30 · 25/03/2020 15:48

If you read this its in the isle of man ...there would be up roar if everywhere x

AwdBovril · 25/03/2020 15:50

I've just been on the phone to Tesco - I read out the specific line of the letter that mentions multi-person groups going shopping together. I was told that "the operative word is try", i.e. if you have to take more than 1 other person, you have to. He did imply that this should be obvious, at which point I observed that people are currently being publicly vilified for coughing, & that their PR team (or whoever) could do with clarifying the information they've issued as it's now all over social media that they will potentially be turning people away if they turn up with DCs / more than 2 people in the group.

AwdBovril · 25/03/2020 15:51

@SapphireSalute - Click & Collect is only viable if you have a car.

PickleBottomNo3sMum · 25/03/2020 15:52

Having been a single parent, I totally agree how short-sighted this is but there is a simple solution - supermarkets why not ask the parent to bring some form of evidence? e.g. council tax bill showing single occupancy. Also of course autistic kids will need to be allowed in too.

Curious78 · 25/03/2020 15:52

Well I won't be shopping at Tesco anytime soon then! I'm a single mum to a 3 yo and for as long as I'm in a position to be able to do so, I want to leave the online delivery slots for those who have no choice but to depend on them.

Ginger1982 · 25/03/2020 15:53

@sweetpea84 @Whattheduck

Long as you're alright eh? 🙄 And I say that as someone in a 2 parent household.

haggistramp · 25/03/2020 15:54

fuck me, the amount of people on this thread actively championing a policy that doesnt affect them but will leave single parents unable to go shopping for food. Stop making out that going shopping is a choice as though there are hundreds of alternatives, there is not. Not everyone will be able to get someone else to do their shopping, not everyone can afford butcher meat, let alone get it delivered. Is it going to take a single family to starve to death to make people realise that this is a stupid ill thought out selfish policy.

GabsAlot · 25/03/2020 15:54

What did they say to that bovril

Bananabixfloof · 25/03/2020 15:56

Are single parents really saying that they don’t have a single friend/neighbour who could pick up some groceries when they’re getting their own

Am no longer a single parent thankfully, but to answer this from back then and now. Back then there wasn't a single person on my street I would have given money to for my shopping. I would never have seen my money again. And I could not have afforded to lose it. I also had two children and obviously depending on the ages I could not have left them both home, or sent the oldest to buy for us (also how does a 12 year old carry much)
As for now, there are a couple people on my street who I would give money for shopping. Both are currently on a 12 week lock down.
I never had parents, limited family far away then and now, never had a car back then. In a normal time these were not problems, it highlights how isolated lone parents can be in these times.
Simply unfair to stop LPs with younger children from shopping without putting something in place first.

awesomeaircraft · 25/03/2020 15:58

@SapphireSalute Click & collect is I am afraid very area-dependent and where I am there is not a chance over the next 3 weeks with the all the main physical supermarkets or the online ones (Amazon, etc).

EverydayLife · 25/03/2020 16:02

People are saying over and over there are no online delivery or click and collect slots. I have even checked in the middle of the night. So why posters are still suggesting that I have no idea!

I am a single parent to a disabled child who has to come everywhere with me. I also shop for my elderly parents and deliver their shopping to another town. I have no one to shop for me, my daughter and my parents. I hope this is not a rule in my local store.

Jaxhog · 25/03/2020 16:03

Whilst I am sympathetic, having children running around is completely unacceptable. If we don't limit every single unnecessary contact, more people will die.

And no, we can't get home deliveries because of all the lazy, selfish people who don't need them who have snagged them all. There have been absolutely none in any supermarket in our area for example, for the past 2 weeks or the next 3. I'm a vulnerable person and will have to go to the supermarket next week. I don't want your kids to be running around putting my life at risk. Find someone to look after them.

Xenia · 25/03/2020 16:04

I agree. I go to shops these days but just after the PM said shop on line I went to 2 sites where I have accounts and they were unworkable and over loaded. On line shoppig is not an option.

However 500,000 people have recently signed for universal credit so perhaps those or half of them could be helped into jobs for supermarkets dealing with on line orders.
