No children allowed in supermarket

My sister went to Tesco with her toddler and was told no children allowed from next week. Understand this is wise for infection control but what if you're a single parent with tiny kids and can't do online shopping?

@Awwlookatmybabyspider I'm well aware of that. My local shop is bare, the co op isn't well stocked enough at the best of times for a weekly shop either. This is so shit.

Home42 · 25/03/2020 12:16

My parents are in 12 week isolation, my sister and her family are in 2 week isolation. I’m shopping for my parents, my sis and another elderly lady with no family nearby. I am a single parent with a small child. I’ll just have to use a supermarket that WILL let me in. The man is a twat!

GCAcademic · 25/03/2020 12:17

Can you get it delivered?

Seriously? There are no delivery slots. None.

FaFoutis · 25/03/2020 12:17

What a stupid discriminatory decision. Tesco making it harder for single parents, who already have the hardest job in my view.

DingleberryRose · 25/03/2020 12:17

I went to buy essentials earlier and there was a family of 5 wandering about Tesco, mum, dad and three kids. They bring these rules in because people take the piss.

1278kj · 25/03/2020 12:17

I’m seeing this all the time. No kids allowed, others moaning about kids in shops but realistically single parents, those who’s partners are key workers have no choice!

lilmishap · 25/03/2020 12:17

My sons birthday in middle of May, they will have stopped selling toys well before then to make space/staff/vehicles available for food supplies.

I'll be in the corner curled in a ball rocking

Inmyivorytower · 25/03/2020 12:18

Isle of Man, it doesn’t say if this is a national policy or just an arbitrary decision by one stupid manager.

TargaryenDragon · 25/03/2020 12:18

Military families? I'm home with 2 children alone, 250 miles from any family and my husband is currently based 150 miles away.

I have no one who can shop for me. I Have managed to secure a click and collect for mid April... it will have to be the local shop until then I guess?

Very badly thought out.

ViciousJackdaw · 25/03/2020 12:19

Sounds like a case of shitty parents spoiling things for all the decent ones. I can't see an issue with a baby in a pram, a toddler on reins or a well behaved child. I'm sorry things are so shit for everyone.

Vinorosso74 · 25/03/2020 12:20

That is harsh. I can understand not taking the whole family but you can't leave a young child home alone. I would say go to a different supermarket.
There was a girl 3 or 4 in Sainsburys last week flying around on her scooter (with really snotty nose too). I passed her a couple of times but had no idea who she was with. I then saw both parents aimlessly wandering around smiling at her as she whizzed around. I see they don't need that sort of behaviour in a busy shop!

lilmishap · 25/03/2020 12:21

I found that after reading the OP, where was it OP?

IntrovertBnReady4Lockdown4Ages · 25/03/2020 12:22

Any child seen running riot in the shops should be asked to leave with their parents. There, issue fixed! There's no need to punish others because of a few idiots.

Tesco is incredibly silly for this! Plenty of solutions regarding children and parents. They could post warning everywhere about child-behaviour when inside shops, etc.

1forsorrow · 25/03/2020 12:22

I'm elderly and can't go shopping for 12 weeks but I think this dividing us all up into groups isn't really very positive. People will be getting resentful of the elderly/vulnerable and to be honest some people were to start off with. I don't know what the answer is but clearly a single parent with young children will need to shop, similarly if one parent is a doctor/nurse working long shifts the other parent needs to be able to shop. It is a shocking situation and setting people against each other isn't helpful.

Mia1415 · 25/03/2020 12:22

Wow! I hope this isn't the case. Not sure quite what I'm expected to do with my DS! I don't want to take him shopping (or go shopping myself) but as a lone parent, what are you supposed to do!

blackswan88 · 25/03/2020 12:22

Surely the rule should be one ADULT? If there is another adult at home then the one going to the shops isn't going to take them? And maybe one adult allowed with primary school aged children as older ones can look after themselves?

CheekyMango · 25/03/2020 12:24

When Tesco opens its doors on Tuesday morning, it will only be allowing one person per household to enter the building with each shop

Mr Hallwood accepted that some people, such as single parents, may struggle to get into the store under the new rules but that we all must find way to do this, whether that means someone else doing our shopping or making other arrangements

So spread it further by getting someone to look after them? HOPE THIS IS RAISED BY THE BBC IN THE NEWS CONFERENCE TODAY IF THERE IS ONE

blue25 · 25/03/2020 12:24

Good. Kids were running around unsupervised and getting up close to others when I went to the supermarket yesterday.

CheekyMango · 25/03/2020 12:24

FFS

awesomeaircraft · 25/03/2020 12:25

@TargaryenDragon hear, hear. DH is miles away. Asda, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tescos, Waitrose, Amazon groceries have no delivery slots anytime soon. Checked them all.
I have to get out, there is no other option.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/03/2020 12:25

I agree this is as a result of careless parents allowing their children to run unfettered around the supermarkets/ shops, but ffs, this can't be allowed!

It's ridiculous to prevent parents from being able to access food because they can't leave their small children alone at home! Have you considered writing to your MP about it? What a shitty situation, I'm so sorry :(

PinkiOcelot · 25/03/2020 12:25

Some bloody stupid responses on this thread!!
I think this is a total dick move by the manager of this particular Tesco. However, from tales of family day out at the supermarket, I can kind of see where h s coming from. Not fair on sensible people though.

Bagelsandbrie · 25/03/2020 12:26

This is absolutely ridiculous if this is true. Many lone parents are completely isolated at the best of times and have no help whatsoever.

wherethecloudsaregoing · 25/03/2020 12:27

You’d simply have to leave them at home, and be as fast as possible Sad

PepePig · 25/03/2020 12:27

I think it's fair enough, tbh. Blame those who can't control their kids and let then run around like feral animals. Also blame those who all have to go shopping like it's a bloody day trip. We had our freedoms a week ago, and look where it got us.

Don't blame Tesco. He has a duty of care to the poor staff that have to be exposed to this virus, day in, day out. Maybe people will actually start coming out only when necessary now, rather than bending the rules 24/7...
