Easter Bank holidays should be flexible or postponed

What’s the point of bank holidays in the current environment. They should be postponed until the summer. At best they don’t mean anything, Easter Sunday is the religious day if you want to celebrate. At worst, they will be depressing and encourage people to mingle! Let’s start a petition to move them!!

No thank you

I am a frontline NHS worker and the only thing keeping me going right now is the fact I have Easter off for once this year

Sirzy · 25/03/2020 06:37

Start a petition? Seriously. Because the government don’t have enough to deal with?

Burgerandchipvan · 25/03/2020 06:38

YABU. I think most people need a day off. We're in a stressful situation and people need time to recharge their batteries. It's not going to be the most exciting Easter for most people but we've just got to make the best of it.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 06:39

Oh just leave it, it wouldn’t make any difference.

bigchris · 25/03/2020 06:40

I'm still going to work every day

I desperately need a long weekend

I can't wait for a bit of isolate, down time and time with my family

PickleThePenguin · 25/03/2020 06:41

It still means I will have 2 days off work, even if that work is WFH. I'm still looking forward to having a nice time off with my family (household only of course), even if it will be different to normal.

Calic0 · 25/03/2020 06:42

I can’t help feeling this should be low down the list of government priorities right now. If we get to the end of this and the worst thing that has happened to someone is that two bank holidays have been “wasted” then they’re not doing too badly.

Also...people who are fucking stupid enough to use it as an excuse to “mingle”...I hope they get hit with huge fines. Hypothetical idiocy.

Bloomburger · 25/03/2020 06:43

I'm sure the financial markets and those that work in them could do with a couple of days break, I know my husband could.

Singlebutmarried · 25/03/2020 06:43

No. It will cost the businesses that do manage to keep going down the line.

I’m considering asking my boss to put some of this down as holiday, we’re a small business and can keep going (we’re in finance and yes we’re all WFH) but to then take extra days later in the year would be ridiculous.

hikarati · 25/03/2020 06:43

My employer has already told us be have to take 5 days before June then 10 before August because they don't want several hundred employees all wanting the annual leave in Jan-March next year. No you can't do anything but nor can anyone else. people still need breaks . Use some common sense.

Nothing2doooooo · 25/03/2020 06:54

I don't think OP considered those who are actually working and need the time off. I'm sure this changes her stance now. That's it, thread no longer needed Wink

Darcydashwood · 25/03/2020 06:55

No thanks. My husband is a key worker so can’t work from home. I am at home with my 5 year old by myself every day. I’m clinging to the thought of those bank holidays actually as is he.

MarshaBradyo · 25/03/2020 06:56

Even if you wfh it’s nice to have a day off. No mingling just day off.

Blackdog19 · 25/03/2020 06:59

No, the economy won’t need more bank holidays and people off when things are back to normal. And people are still WFH so would like a break.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/03/2020 07:00

When all this is over the last thing we will need is holidays.

foxy86 · 25/03/2020 07:12

If it is nice weather and you aren’t sick you can still have a bbq albeit a quiet family one. We are planning a bbq just us 3, might chuck a chicken leg over to the neighbours now and again if they keep their distance. I have a feeling this Easter will be the hottest on record ever because everyone is at home and can’t bloody do anything!

Sostenueto · 25/03/2020 07:14

Don't bother moving just don't celebrate!

Sostenueto · 25/03/2020 07:15

Defoe:

“It was very sad to reflect how such a person as this had been a walking destroyer perhaps for a week or a fortnight before that; how he had ruined those that he would have hazarded his life to save, and had been breathing death upon them, even perhaps in his tender kissing and embracings of his own children.”

Itsnotthatcomplicated · 25/03/2020 07:21

Nope I am still working from home.

The thought of a 4 day weekend, not cooped up in the box room all day, is something I am very much looking forward to.

The Easter bank holiday......is for Easter. Easter Sunday will be that Sunday regardless.

Nobody has to have a BBQ or a gathering because its bank holiday. The people who will gather because it's good friday are the ones who are still doing it now. Because its sunday, or because 'Boris cant tell us what to do'.

Why on earth would you think it would be ok, to make those normal working days for everyone else, on their behalf?

SirTobyBelch · 25/03/2020 07:31

For those of us working from home full-time, often with poor quality ICT equipment/network connections and extra workload resulting from the need for emergency planning and maintaining contact with employees who are feeling very anxious, a couple of days off will be essential. While bank holidays might be salt in the wounds of people who have been laid off or are self-employed an unable to work, they are still important for others.

thecatsthecats · 25/03/2020 07:49

Heck, I'm taking a day of normal holiday this Friday.

No, I can't go anywhere, but I've been in charge of the company response reorganising everything and doing financial planning, and I could do with a long weekend.

LadyGAgain · 25/03/2020 07:52

No thanks. We are WFH with two young children and the juggle struggle is very real. Having a few days to just be with the kids will be wonderful.

What a strange request.

justmyview · 25/03/2020 07:53

This

SudokuQueen · 25/03/2020 07:55

Will they have to move summer too? Because we are likely to be stuck inside for most of that too. Hmm

Just write off 2020 for having any fun. Maybe it will be fixed by Christmas.

Reluctantbettlynch · 25/03/2020 07:58

@Blackdog19 that's not true. Huge sectors of the economy do need bank holidays. Moving them later in Summer would help tourism & hospitality.
